Not sure how many of you out there use RealPlayer but I know you have friends and family that probably do so you might want to pass this warning on to them.

We find that RealPlayer 10.5 is badware because it fails to accurately and completely disclose the fact that it installs advertising software on the user's computer. We additionally find that RealPlayer 11 is badware because it does not disclose the fact that it installs Rhapsody Player Engine software, and fails to remove this software when RealPlayer is uninstalled.

"Sherlock", "No" & "Sh*t" are 3 words or names that spring to mind

RealPlayer has been "badware" in every sense of the word for a long time now.

lol its the worst. Unfortunately, a lot of sites use .rm format for streaming/downloadable video.

Nothing a Media Player classic can't handle though :)

I think Realplayer has been garbage at least since the 90's, but I could be remembering incorrectly.

Well everyone beat me to it. The only people who don't know that RP sucks are universities, corporations, and illegal music sites.

I think we all know someone that might not use real player, but definitely has it installed. Case in point: my parents :(

I never liked RealPlayer even before even before they installed all that crap

Realplayer has been teh debil ever since it's inception. Friends don't let friends install Realplayer :D

You are absolutely correct. It just happened to be one of the earliest video streaming formats available which is how it became popular.

I can't believe it still exists and it is used by people, much like AOL, more crapware

I didn't know it was still used..... RealPlayer = crap and bloatware and spyware for years.

I used to use Realplayer on my old mac, because it was the best video program available on os 9

Thank god for VLC.

I could have told you this about 10 years ago.

The concept of real player was a good one - they are the first ones I can think of that got behind the idea of streamed music/video.

Too bad they turned into a greedy spyware bloated crapware company so quickly back then.

for some reason the japanese are obsessed with the rmvb file. Sucks on OS X since there is not alternative, luckilly the OS X one isnt nearly as jacked up as the windows version.

It was alright between like 1998-2000, but ever since then it has been pure garbage. Its just bad at EVERYTHING it does, it has not a single redeeming factor. WMP actually plays rm files better and with much better deblocking. They seem to have no interest in improving the quality of the player either.

RealPain(inmyass)er

Real Alternative or my personal favorite media player...KMPlayer for pain relief. :)

I only recently found that KMP will play .rm and .mov files, seems there's not much it won't play.

Yeah since I got my first computer in 1997 I have always shuddered at the thought of Real player..

I have ALWAYS hated realplayer and the whole real media format, what a pain in the ass that software was, I haven't installed it for myself or family in many many years.. thank god flash took over as the dominant media player on the net

klite mega codec pack..

The fastest way to bone your system. Install a "codec pack." Seriously, how many out of date bootleg MPEG2 decoders do you need on your system?

There is only one codec pack that is not a complete trainwreck of old and conflicting codecs: CCCP. The rest is just system cluttering bloated garbage.

+1 for CCCP ;)

Another -1 for K-lite, I don't even use codec packs anymore I've experienced and witnessed my fair share of systems boned by K-lite, VLC works and MediaCoder takes care of the encoding I do. (MediaCoder:Encoding::VLC:playback)

Crap I cant edit? But yeah I switched to CCCP from KLite/Real Alternative too. Been awesome for quite a while now.

Real has always been despicable. It is in their corporate genes, and they do not make any attempt to escape.
I avoid "real" content - or use Real Alternative.

One of the online courses my wife recent took required Realplayer. It was pretty awful. It would occasionally freeze up and she'd have to start the entire lecture all over again (we're talking 1 to 1 1/2 hour lectures). If she paused it or tried to backtrack, same thing.

Falls in nicely with Quicktime player. I've never installed either one because they mess up the computer. Luckily both have alternatives.
