I know, I know, another 7970 thread..... But I just wanted to say that I am looking forward to replacing my 4890 + 4870 crossfire setup with one of these cards! Faster by far, huge power drop at idle, much less power draw at load and should be set for 3 years or so.

I realize that $549 for one card can be a bit of change, but over a three year period, it will definitely even out.
 
I'm looking forward to seeing what NVIDIA has to offer.
 
Its crossing my mind. I haven't spend $500 on a video card in a while. The last video card I paid $500 was for a 7950 GX2. Im very tempted, but I think I'm gonna see how the 7950 and 7870 performs before I jump on it.

Well, I ended up not waiting anyways. I just purchased 2 x 6950 2GB Powercolor cards from newegg for $250 each. (Also, a $20 rebate for each card is available but I do not expect to get it.) From what I was reading, these cards should have a dual bios switch and unlockable shaders.

I still think the 7970 will be a good card but I just did a well thought out impulse buy for myself. (I figure these will be good for 3 years as well.)
 
people crack me up paying 500 extra for a few extra frames per second that make no difference above the 60 the human eye can detect in anycase .If you already have a card you like that plays the games you like at a hi resolution above 60 fps why wste the money ? Buy a new CPU more memory a better Motherboard and get a bigger boost in overall performance for less. I guess bragging rights are worth cash to some people . The old saying anout a fool and his money applies here .AMD comes out with acard thats fastest then Nvidia comes out with a faster Pl run out and buy the Nvidia card 6 months later AMD faster spend more then the cycle continues pretty soon you have thousands wrapped up in obsolete cards this makes no sense. get a card that does what you want and ignore upgrading until your current card won't do what you want..

Important to always look at minimum FPS in benchmarks for gaming and desired display settings to be played at.

I'm currently running Intel HD3000 and before that a X1600M. I now own a 2560x1440 monitor, so the 7970 would be great for it. If you're just running 1080p, the 7970 may be a little much. But for resolutions above that, I can't really get the IQ and performance I want from a cheaper mid-range card, so the 7970 is a must.

Going from a 4890 + 4870 crossfire to 6950 crossfire setup will make a hugh difference. Beside, I have already upgraded my mainboard, processor and ram in the last 5 months. Besides, I usually upgrade my main parts every 2 years or so and my mainboard about everyone 3.5 years or so. Because of that, I was able to build a quick quad core machine with 8 Gigs of ram for my daughter.
 
This will be the first time I'm upgrading my video card first, always done everything else and vc last.

I'll get to see how bad a 7950 gets choked by an oc'd 9450.

I can completely tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz on my 120hz monitor. A faster video card will mean faster fill rate along with better image quality... Period. Maybe I'm some kind of alien with superevolved eyes?

People who buy a new card every 6 months have a job that pays good enough to afford such a lifestyle in the first place. I guarantee they all still sell the older one at a decent price to offset the cost of the new one. Don't forget the higher quality video card you buy, the better its resale value will be.

LOL it's going to be pretty bad... My 9450 was holding my 5970 back a noticable amount in BF3.

September is right around the corner! Unless your talking about a 560 replacement, cause the 580 replacement won't be out for a long time.
 
I'm still debating between one or two.

Of course I'll also be getting my Ivy Bridge when it comes out, but maybe just one and then buy a second one when I get IB? gahh so many questions...soo many possibilities.

I paid $530 for a 7800GTX, haha. 256MB of vram baby! (Does nvidia even still call their cards GTX? I can hardly follow all these new generations... 10 new numbers every 6 months.)

And that was a steal, iirc. I got it like 1-2 weeks after it launched at $600.

I finally replaced it with a friend's old 260 for like $60 a year or two ago.

$590 in 6.5 years. Reading about all these new cards is giving me the upgrade itch once again though. :D
 
Why is power draw a big thing nowadays? Are you paying the power bill, and are you so close to the edge you have to worry about each watt used?

Seriously, why the big deal on power issues all of a sudden? Because its PC to be green?

it is exciting to see a new graphics card though, just wish we knew what nVidia had up it's sleeve as a response to this.

Less power + more performance = no need for new power supplies

Also theoretically means better OCs as less volts used = less heat generated = heat a non-issue in resonable OCs. This is evident in the fact that every reviewed 7970 out there can OC 200mhz in AMD's lame Catalyst software while only taking a tiny hit in power draw and therefore temps. Keeping temps low is crucial. Low volts = low temps. Thanks, science!

Yeah, I also wish Nvidia would announce something, so that we could compare - even if it's just a date. Regardless, I hope we get benchmarks soon of these Sapphire overclocked 7970's. If performance is out of this world and price is reasonable, I may not wait for Nvidia.
 
I'm trying to sell my 2 GTX480's. I plan on going with a Single 7970. Haven't been on AMD for a while. But should be nice!
 
Regardless what NVIDIA will have to offer with Kepler, they're really going to be relying on their green-blooded fans for this cycle. Just like the last, I suppose. Will be interesting to see if Kepler is another Fermi.

Seriously if you have to pay the power bill and do have a family it's a little easier to justify upgrading hardware to save power costs. Power costs do add up as well. Real $aving$.
 
Kepler should be good, but honestly I'm not expecting it to be much faster than the 580 unless they gave up some gpgpu stuff. They were already skirting the edge with power on the 580s and am not sure how they are going to have a "7970" killer without requiring a crazy psu.

Who uses the same GPU for 10 years?

I don't know but the numbers don't lie. If you can upgrade your hardware and improve your video gaming performance and save money in energy costs its a win win situation.


Another thing about lower power gpus and cpus is the heat comes down which usually makes the devices over clock better and if you are into water cooling the lower heat will help all water cooled devices on a single loop.


I appreciate the lower power usage and improved performance. It's significant to me and my fps gaming.

60+ fps is required for any first person shooter that needs half a good reaction time to excel in. ex. play CS 1.6 with 60fps vs 100fps . You'd never no back.
Also, fps greater than 60 allows some games to give a more "true" turning feel when aiming.
 
The people that argue that spending 500 dollars to "save" all that money on electricity really really should take a few Econ classes.


Operating on that logic everyone from grandma to 3rd would children should "ONLY" Use the top tier power saving GPU's and should be required to upgrade every 12 months.

Would you ditch your current car, take a bath on trade in, and go 15K more into debt so you can get 2 more miles per gallon? Probably not. Same logic applies here. No argument that it's lower power and more efficient, but there are entry costs and sunk costs you have to think about. Even if you factor out the money I'd get selling my 6950 2GB card - it might take me 24 months to recoup the money I would outlay on a new GPU via "saving on electricity". The positive return on investment is simply too long in the fast paced world of cutting edge GPUs.

Regular LCD, 60 hz.

If a 3D (well, one that uses polygons, not like a 2D indie production) game runs a steady 60 fps, I can tell. If the 3D game runs a steady 120 fps (like cutting the hell down on detail and resolution in BF3), I can tell. If it runs at 30, I can tell.

On a CRT, I didn't bother going past maxfps 95 in Quake 2, but that was a noticeable difference, and a highly helpful one in action.

A lot of people have a thing for highest image quality, full detail and AA, no matter the frame rate hit they take, they are easy kills and big complainers.

Once I get my 79XX I'll continue my über high FPS BF3 career.

You are allowed to call me nuts.
