Really High Water Temps

I have the setup below. I have a Loop is as follows:

Swifty MCP655 Pump
BIX Rad (w/ 120mm fan)
Swifty res
DangerDen RBX CPU block
DangerDen Koolah (on 7900GTO)

I am getting 35c idle but like 80+c under load (using SpeenFan 4.33). This is at stock speeds an stock voltages!

I may have a bad mount. But I also noticed that I brain farted and have the flow going backwards on the RBX. Water is entering through the two outer barbs and exiting from the inner. I assume this is the problem. But I am amazed and how much of a difference it makes.

I will be the flow and making it correct tonight. I just thought it was funny how much of a difference it made.
 
You probably got other things going on as well. A bigger radiator and lapping your block might do wonders. :)

I am not really looking for extreme cooling -- just enough to get me to 3.0 ghz or so (and doing it quietly).

I will see if it is the loop first.
 
You're running a Q6600 and a 7900GTO on a single 120mm radiator??

There's your problem... You'd need about 100cfm through it to cool adequately.

Really -- you all think so. I just really don't want to go 120 x 2 because of packaging constraints as well as just not wanting to bore another 12cm hole in my case.

i guess we will see when I swap the flow and see if I get any lower temps.

Also I will try reseating the block. Is there any special trick to seating an RBX on a 775 chip?
 
Well... A qx6600 at stock is dumping around 100w of "gaming" load heat into the loop. Jump up to 3ghz and you're at around 150w now.

A stock 7900GTO is probably dumping around 70w of "gaming" load heat into the loop...

A 120mm radiator with 1.5g/m flowrate, and around 60cfm's will get rid of around 130w of heat... So you're already 40w over that, at stock!

As for the RBX, no, no tricks... But the block orientation really does matter... Middle in!

Hmmm, cool air from the radiator is probably a sign of bad waterblock mount... But I'd assume it's due to the setup you currently have... Tubes going in the wrong side and all.
 
I vote block mount. Of course fix the those other things. It might take a little louder fan than one would like but the amount of heat a decent rad even 120x1 can dump is amazing. Its not optimal, a 2 x 120 would be better, but sort your issues out and you might can get by. Good block mount + beefly fan (a 35mm thick med speed panaflow would be good, the 35mm thick high speed panaflow on a speed controller would be even better).

I have a really beefy fan (120x38mm) -- but it is loud when turned up full, but moves 110 cfm. I have it on a speed controller -- and the problem is that the fan has a noticable electric whine when I turn it down. To be honest -- it doesnt seem to matter if the fan as on full or on low -- the temps stay about the same (again making me think I have a bad mount and that the flow is all wrong). I am gong to try a different 120x38mm fan that is much quieter (but moves less air -- about 90cfm). I also am going to shroud the fan -- from my automotive performance background I know that shrouding a radiator makes it much more efficient.

I will correct all the issues and remount the block and see what happens.

I used a small amount Arctic Silver 2 (because that is what I had around) and spread it across the heat spreader using an exacto knife. I know that now the in thing is to put a simple line of AS on the head spreader and make the block mount pressure move the AS. But I don't like that idea. Thoughts?
 
Yes it's good to use a small dot or small line and have your block spread it for you. And I agree I think you just have a bad mount. I mean it doesn't help that your cooling two things with a 120.1 rad. But still those temps seem high for stock clocks.

The air from my 2X120 is cool as well, but my temps are 33-25idle and never really past 45 under load (E4300@3.1)
I am running 4 yate loons in push pull though.

But that's because your double radiator is so huge, and the heat-dump of your CPU is so small. Put a Q6600 in there and it'll be warm.
