Real-world performance

I'm still confused about memory on an A64 as it pertains to real world performance. I understand the difference between 1T and 2T in real world performance, but what confuses me is this: At what point do the relaxed timings on a 2x1gb setup hamper its performance compared to 4x512mb? In other words, what is better, 2x1gb of Crucial Value running at 230mhz at 3-3-3-8 or 4x512mb of Twinmos SP (or something similar) at its OC'd ceiling in that setup? I'm not interested in benchmarks, only real world performance.

I'm sorry if this has been asked previously, I have searched but I haven't exactly found an answer. Thanks so much guys.

EDIT: I meant on a s939 platform. Thanks.

Eclipse, you are a god, thank you sir. So going with what's the cheapest is the best path in this case? I think by the time more than 2gb of memory becomes the norm, I will be upgrading the whole system and technology will have advanced (DDR2?) so I'm not concerned with filling all 4 slots. However, the reports of instability with all 4 slots taken is unnerving...Thanks everyone.

cheaper dosent mean its ok........name brand cheapness is ok, with life time warentee.....

you wanna get on topic of real world.........ram is ram, physicaly with your eyes, i could build a system for 700 dollars, that would look exactly the same as a 3 grand system, its all about benchmarks with people these days, now, if your overclocking, ram means something, if you arent, get the cheapest, most reliable, reputuable company......

my crappy system, looks and is just as smooth as a base line a64 2800+, with a better video card

real world means, a 600 dollar system will look the same as 2-3 grand systems, benchmarking is for brag rights im running BF2 on my rig now, and its fine, on low settings, but i dont play games for eye candy

if you really want good quality sticks of ram with no overclocking, go with Crucial value, or something like that, any value type ram will be fine and work perfect, if you overclock, get the higher end sticks of ram from crucial or other companies like kingston, corsair, ect

Yeah, this is what I'm struggling with. I do want to overclock the memory a little, but I don't want to run 3+ volts to do it. I've seen 1gb sticks from reputable companies for ~$75 (Mushkin SP3200), but everything I've heard says they have no overclocking ability. I mean, the whole point for me is to eek out as much juice as possible spending the least amount of money. Of course, that's the obvious. I guess the big question is how much more real world performance will I get by overclocking to 230-250mhz instead of leaving it at stock timings at 200mhz? 10 fps in games and 20 seconds in DVDShrink encoding? All in all, the consensus seems to be, not much.
