With a little bit of tech knowhow and some decent hardware anyone can pretend to be anyone, even while live-streaming.

The possibilities here are kind of scary, TBH. Skip to the 16m mark to see it in action, the rest is an installation tutorial.

That's been a thing for years now. When the deep fake face tech originally came out it didn't take long before people were using it on omegle in real time.
It's constantly been improving and this is a lot better than it was before. It's still easy to spot if you know what you're looking for. But yeah, you could fool a lot of people.

I'm just surprised there aren't laws criminalizing the development of technologies like these.

The consequences of the end of truth are profound.

Not so long ago video did not even exist (personal video that was almost true before digital camera) and the notion of truth existed, the very worst possible case scenario of this is going to the pre-video era level of truth (if we want, people could want to believe false stuff obviously, but any tech can work on that case). People just wrote in a paper what someone said or did, with zero recording or word of mouth.

Fake picture at first were a bit scary, even pre-photoshop and again with photoshop, people rapidly adjusted, never believe a picture with the original non-developed film and the source.

Audio being faked as being going for a while.

Video is just the latest, but I am not sure it need to be different than what photoshop was for picture, no one believe an extraordinary picture without the source being validated, this will become the same for videos, if anything people will stop believing anything they see that did went through a validation process and make things way more truth than what they have been since the printing press was invented.

The reflex to turn a lot of people into criminal and jail them that pop-up so easily can be a bit troublesome... Movie studio should not have been to finish Fast and furious 7 using people looking like the death actor...

I am of the opinion these days that it is best that the best version of this stuff is out there for all.

The problem with putting a bunch of restrictions n this type of thing, is that the average moron citizen won't know that nothing can be trusted anymore. State actors are not gong to respect restrictions. At least with it all out there everyone will be aware that things with only one source are not trustworthy, things with 2 are suspect. lol

Maybe criminalized for citizens, but certainly not for corporations or governments.
