Well I'm breaking my head over this choice. I currently got a 2180 no OC cause of the crappy stock HSF+ my lack of funds. So i'm selling that and I have enough for an e6550. With my new setup i'll be running the following.

mobo = gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l rev 2.0
vid= 9600gt
ram= Adata 2gigs ddr2 800
antec sonata III case with a 500w earthwatts PSU.

So from you guys that have enough money to have more than one pc. Is there a real life difference between the 4mb vs 1mb cache, with OC & without. If I just get another 2180 i'll be able to get more ram, way better HSF and more HD space. But it's going to be minimum two years before I can even upgrade. As a long time investment I see the e6550 as the winner. But yeah I know the 2180 is a great chip too, so it's driving me crazy. Any real life experience? i'm not too into benchies and that stuff.

I already did some searching but the results weren't that satisfying.

PS.
I think it's just the damn bragging rights of having a e6550 when all my friends still have old pentiums thats making this choice so hard :p.
 
I cant speak for 1mb, but my 2mb E6400 has held up the past 2 years just fine, and i expect i can run it for another year or two before justifying something better.


Also...2mb core 2 at 2.8 and 1600 fsb vs my laptop with 1.8ghz 4mb chip at 800mhz fsb, both feel exactly the same.
 
With the e6550 maybe, but not with the hsf that comes with the 2160, it's super tiny and I really didn't like the temps on the 2180 just getting it to 2.6. I brought it down to 2.0 because I just wasn't satisfied with it.

In "real life" you're probably not going to notice a difference, other than maybe encoding media finishes slightly faster if you do that. In gaming you're probably going to be video card limited anyways.
 
The real world difference bet. the E2x00 series and the E4x00 is greater than the difference bet. the E4x00 and E6x00 series.

In fact, personally i think the latter are close enough to be considered equal in the real world..
 
I thought you could still OC the E21x0s on stock cooling pretty well. Have you even tried? You might try waiting for an afforable E8200 instead of spending on that E6550.

In the last few month or so, the E2XXX line of CPUs have been shipping with a smaller HSF, like the ones found with the E8400. The newer and smaller HSF are pretty crappy for overclocking.
 
I have a couple of E4300's that I'm selling. Have 2 MB cache if interested.
 
Wait you don't have funds for good cooling and yet after selling e2180 you have cash for e6550?
Why don't you simply get good cooling and OC ?
 
From what i've heard the cache has a lot to do with gaming and pumping up your fps.

I have the smaller HSF and its quite capable of running my e2160 @ 1.42v and 3.2ghz. Maybe your OC problem lies in improper case cooling or a low clocking chip. But to say that the new stock HSF are not sufficient are quite incorrect.

My cpu runs ~ 30C idle and 65C MAX under load from prime 95 (much lower in real life applications). And that's at 1.42v. You should be able to hit 3ghz on like 1.3 something V, which should have even lower temps.
