First thing: Enough with these goddamn rate my PC threads. This isn't American Idol for PCs

Second: Don't you think that's a really stupid idea posting your serial number to your PC? I could call and report it stolen.

I have a GX270. Mine came with a 2.4c 800FSB, 512 PC2700DDR, 80gb 7200 8meg cache, with a 1801FP for only 1200. So it was worth it. Mine preforms pretty well.

First Thing: No shit. I couldn't agree more.

Second Thing: Done, my Dell PC with serial <removed> was stolen by some guy on the Hard Forums :) j/k.

Try adding some RAM. I run AutoCad on my HP D330T Slim Tower, which by the way is way better than any Dell, with only 256MB of RAM, P4 2.66 and I don't have any issues with it's performance, but I am probably not getting into the depth of work you are. I use AutoCad just for shop drawings with minimal details.

Dude, calm down, everything is going to be okay. I asked a simple question, you have the choice to open the thread or not, you did, so deal with it.

And if you really reported it stolen that would be really lame of you, i'm a total noob at this, so i'm sorry if your a God when it comes to computers, but i'm not....i come to these forums for help, not to be taken advantage of. grow up chief.

wooo someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed !

as for the thread , all i could see u needing might be more ram.

Nobody woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I'm making a desparete plea to get these forums back to levels they used to be. And part of it is sticking to asking questions and creating threads that matter. Ask someone who's been around for a while. These forums have taken quite a plunge.

And to the original poster, I'm not a god of computers....but I do have a brain, and it uses common sense and logic. Would you go post your social security number and credit card info on a public forum? No, because it would be stupid. And so is posting your private info about your PC. I could make a simple call to dell and have a lot of info from them, and file a report saying that was my PC. They'd ask for system specs as proof, and thanks to you, you've provided, I could answer all their questions to prove it's mine. So enough with telling me to grow up, Chief. You need to WAKE UP and don't do something stupid like that.

I bet your boss and IT manager would love to know your posting this kind of info. You'd be fired immediately from any place I've ever worked.

I dont know is I should say your welcome or not, since I'm not sure your really thankful. :)....just kidding..your welcome. I doubt that you really have anything to worry about with the serial number, just ribbing on a ya a little.

Bottom line is that your PC is fine. When you say slowdowns, I am guessing that it is because the system is running out of memory and is swapping data from the memory to the hard drive swap file. Hard to tell without actually sitting down and using it for a while. RAM is a easy fairly cheap upgrade. Goto www.crucial.com and find your ram there. They have a large database that covers just about every PC out there and will sell you RAM that works at a good price. No hassle about finding out the specs and stuff like that.

I agree with you djnes that these rate my pc threads are lame and stupid. But this thread isn't one of them. He should have titled it something like "My PC is slow, do I need to upgrade or buy new".

You would be surprised. I dealt with them for 3 years before working for HP. Once you tell them you have the service code and/or serial number, they naturally assume your the owner. If anyone's read Kevin Mitnick's book, you'll see how this can be a perfect opportunity for some social engineering.

You really should chill out, its not that big of a deal. Your posts lately are not going to derail [H] from any path it on, you are really just being an asshole.

I agree though this thread is pointless, mabey a more witty subtle insulting comment would do rather then a stoning...

I doubt you would get fired from anywhere if you copy and pasted the computer information on the internet. If the places you have worked for would, then you are working at some pretty shitty companies.

You absolutely would be fired. Even the small companies have groups called "Asset Management". I would be worried more about a company that DOESN'T look after it's equipment investments. There are tons and tons of software suites that assist in asset management as well.

Man, you are one big asshole are'nt you?
I apologize to everyone else who finds these post annoying i should have labeled it differently. thanks for every ones help, except my buddy here.

He obviously has anger issues and i really doubt my boss would fire me for posting a question about the computer i use...also we have no IT guy, so stuff it.

Tell me why exactly would you get fired from a company because you accidently put the serial number of you machine on a forum...

What harm would it cause, I am just curious.

And no you absolutly would NOT be fired I can guarentee you that. The logical reason is the harm vs the investment the company has sunk into you as an employee.

The amount of time skills and money a company invests into YOU farrrr outweighs the 1200 dollar investment into a work station, not to mention it would take a simple explanation to clear up what had gone wrong, you may get into 'trouble' but by no means fired. Thats way to dramatic.

Well perhaps when you get out into the real world a little more, your realize why you could have posted the system specs without all the serial/asset information on your machine. I have no anger issues. I just don't have a lot of patience with people who don't use common sense. If you feel comfortable putting all that info out there, go right ahead...but one warning:

These forums are viewable to everyone...not just members. You have no idea who's lurking and reading that info. Especially given the public conflict with Infinium. I am sure they have fans (insert laughter here) that lurk in our forums, looking for anyway to cause trouble.

Man you know everything don't you? We have a total of 8 people working here, we don't need an IT guy or an "Asset Management" group. So see your wrong.....again.

Well you know what, how about next time you make me aware of this in a polite way instead of being a jack off and jumping down my throat with threats.

No one should have to make you aware that you should post information that could be dangerous in the wrong hands. That falls under the common sense category. Perhaps I could have been a bit more witty and friendly about it. Perhaps.

I am still awaiting how it could be 'dangerous'.. Just out of curiosity.

I disagree man, at my school where it's all XP machines, XP makes decent P4 machines look like Pentium 75's, serious you should never have a 3 second typing delay in notepad with a P4 machine. Live boot Knoppix and it's fine. Swear to God XP has voodoo magic that can make computers go slow...

Thats not right, XP on a P4 should fly... I get zero delays for programs like notepad and I am running XP Pro on a P4,

Who ever is setting up xp on those machine at you school doesnt know what the hell they are doing..

Alot of people setting up machine in mass quantity dont do alot of simple things like use updated drivers, or install IAA, etc... This stuff can make a P4 setup right snappy, and if not properly setup it can cause a P4 setup to be a bit sluggish. Same thing with not using proper driver etc. on a new AMD setup.

Linux itself is not good for a simple general workstation where different people may need to use it. Not every one is familiar with linux.. nearly everyone IS familiar with windows. Hense I would never bother using linux on a simple workstation.

OK buddy, put down the pipe and step away.

Same goes for you...put down the pipe and step away. Just benchmarked notepad here and there is only a .0148 second delay.

First, having that info is dangerous because the Dell techs freely give out info once they know a service tag. It's called Social Engineering. Read Kevin Mitnick's book...very very interesting.

Second, Linux would indeed run faster, but he mentions the specific app he runs on the PC, which may not, aye, probably not, have a Linux equivalent.

Im not so sure the guy causes any harm. I mean c'mon.

How about if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything?
You know I think I've heard that 5000 times before when I opened my mouth, and said something stupid. Instead of replying with witty insults and responses, I learned from it.

djnes,
first thing Dell asks you for, after the service tag, is what company owns the machine, address, phone number etc.

And exactly what information are you going to get from the tech support personel?

They don't have the information to give.
It's not like they can say,
"the credit card number used to order this account was..."

You're way way way overreacting about that.
Yeah the "rate my pc" threads may be dumb, but damn.
Stop, take a breath, count to 10.

Looking over your system there is a few more things to consider: how many programs do you have running in your system tray? they can lead to slowdowns. I would agree to upping the ram.
I would not so worry about getting fired over accidently posting a system serial number.

I think the only thing that would be considered fireable in this thread would be posting on company time and listing the coorporation you work for in your profile, since corporate misrepresentaion is considered pretty damn serious in our HR dept.

That certainly hasn't always been their policy. It's been 3 and a half years since I worked at a company using Dell's, but once yoou gave serial number and service tag, they were like, "Ah yes, the Company X account....right, you guys have been buying a bunch of new Dells lately. They were extremely forthcoming with any information. They'd usually say the address to confirm replacement parts, instead of actually asking me for it. This went on for 2 years.

....enough. Flaming, or flaming back is very much frowned on in these forums; against the rules you all agreed to when you registered, actually:
Absolutely NO FLAMING OR NAME CALLING, this is grounds for immediate removal of your posting privileges.
You can keep it on topic and civil.....or your membership fees can be refunded.....completely your choice.
