is 8 raptors to much for one computer to have at one single time?

Your going to need at least one add-on SATA controller card, your power consumption will be huge, and heat might be an issue as well. If you want my honest opinion, unless it's an enterprise server with several SCSI drives in a RAID5 array, there's no reason to have 8 hard drives in one computer.

We are looking at getting 12 400GB SATA drivers to make our 4TB backup server. Tapes are just too slow. Power and heat dissapation will be your biggest problem. Especially with the raptors. There are some great new 8+ chanel SATA raid controlers out on the market now.

Make sure you have a beefy PSU and very good case cooling. I'd say a few 120mm fans, and like the PCP&P 510 Deluxe PSU... In fact, going dual PSUs would probably a good idea.

well, considering that most of the RAID controllers that support more than 4 drives require PCI-X, choose carefully.

cheers,

dave

ya i need to get 8 psu one for each hard drive and im going to have 8 120mm fans blowing on each drive

I seen this pic of a standard full tower filled with 24 200GB WD's. it was crazyness. wish I could find the pic again, they were being cooled by nothing more than a couple 80mm fans. was truly insane.
