I guess my luck has run out. Today I sleeved my whole PSU and the splitters. However while taking by hard drives out in my PC-65B I decided to slide the rack out and it ripped the plastic SATA pieces right off my Hitachi 80gb 8mb hdd's so I now how to nice hdd with just pins hanging out. They still worked. Ok next I Hooked up the splitter and some how I switched the cords around so the red was on the yellow and the yellow was where the reds suppose to be and yeah that really did them in good. One goes click click the other one goes bezzzz bzzz so my 80 gb SATA raid config is pretty much hozed. So should I go raptors know or just do like 2 200gb SATA 8mb's in raid 0 or just get like 1 74gb raptor. Oh yeah and I litterally incenrated a floppy drive... been really bad day maybe I will not be so careless next time lol/
 
2 74GB Raptors in RAID0 will make ya forget all you're troubles. Get a seat belt for you're computer chair, the speed is astonishing.
 
well I have more carnage to add. I also killed my 80gb 8mb seagate pata it was a good drive had all my backup stuff on it like all the really important stuff. And I also lost an older 40gb 2mb seagate. The 80gb if u hook it up and start the comp it instantly shuts it off tried every power outlet too same result.

Not sure why you'd need a seat belt since it's real world speeds aren't any better than a single Raptor. Factor in the worry of losing ALL data if ONE drive fails, it's a gimmick concept. It's been proven, proven again, and beaten to death on the forums that RAID0 is not really providing any benefit.

RAID5 is only a tad slower than RAID0, and contrary to what the previous poster said, it really does make a difference.I average a TB+ every month of video processing, and I wouldn't trust the needed speed to a single drive ever again. If gaming is the greatest demand you put on you're rig, a single 74GB Raptor will suffice. 2 of these drives are obviously faster, and riskier. It's up to you, but RAIDing won't help ya if you don't transfer huge amounts of data.
 
Alright I picked up a 36gb raptor for 160 at frys cause i needed it ASAP. So I know newegg has the same drive for 100 bucks shipped. However I needed it asap. Next I will be looking to add one of those new 250gb 16mb cache SATA drive. I dont really think i need to raid this 36gb it seems really really fast.
 
I just installed 2X250GB Hitachi SATA Hard Disks in Raid 0 with a 32K stripe. I get about 91mb/s rate on these drives, only the raptors are faster but you sacrifice space for only about 5-6 mb more a second, in the average configeration.
 
I would never go raid 5 with less than 5 drives though. Only go raid 5 with a 8-9 driver array. Cause you automaticlly lose one driver for a spare. so there goes 250 gigs, then you lose parts of other drivers for rebuilding. I setup last week a IBM X345 server 6 drivers 2X74 gig 15K SCSI raid 1 and 4 drivers were 4X146 15k scsi gig drives in a raid 5 and only got 280 gigs of usable space. I usually set raid 5 like I said no more than 8-9 but no less.
 
I agree. Managing a RAID5 array should be taken very seriously. Who the hell am I kidding, try , fail, try again. Got 2 rigs running Raid 5, after tons of mistakes on my part, fun to try and fail. If you need to be spoonfed, buy a Dell. Otherwise, buy the most insane rig you can think of, and learn to control the bitch. Mine is way beyond my mental capacity, I will prevail, eventually. The fun is in the learning.

PS. With 4 36GB Raptors(flavor of the week) in
RAID0, I get avg data transfer rate of 110-115MB/s with bursts in the mid 140's. May be RAID5 array tomorrow, and transfer rates will go down, darned parity checks......lol

Bout time to put the other RAID 5 card, I have, into this rig for another round of benchmarks. They have offerred to send me a PATA equivalent
of what I have already, for free. IF it performs, on par with SATA variety, could easily be the fastest PATA controller on Earth. Gotta go contact the folks at Netcell.
 
man i am lovin this raptor its seems faster than my 2 80gb hatachi's in raid0 that i cooked.
 
It should, 36GB Raptors transfer @ 53-55MB/s. I have 5 of em Raided, they aren't bad. The 74 GB raptors are even better, transfer @ 65 MB/s solo, In Raid0, 2 drives avg @110MB/s data transfer. My IDE drives avg less than 32MB/s. Now you understand my interest in RAID configurations.

Go with (1) 74GB Raptor and (2) 200GB drives in RAID 1 if you can. If not, get the Raptor and as big of a storage drive as you can afford.

The 74GB Raptor is the fastest drive available for single user usage, but you won't see any increase in performance with RAID 0.

No I don't understand your interest in RAID configurations or why you think sequential transfer rates mean anything in terms of real world performance.

While interesting from an academic standpoint, overuse of such "benchmarks" as SiSoft Sandra, HDTach, and ATTO PowerTools has contributed to an unwarranted fixation on transfer rates. This offering, however, delivers an outer-zone transfer rate (which is more or less the -only- thing ATTO and Sandra measure!) of 60.1 MB/sec. Those who erroneously depend on benchmarks such as these would thus draw the conclusion that the DiamondMax Plus 8 is a "faster" choice than the original Raptor, a drive which tops out at 57.4 MB/sec. In reality, the Raptor is twice as fast in typical real-world cases. Do not rely on transfer rates to judge a drive's performance.

Yaa, I thought everyone already knew that RAID 0 in a desktop offers no tangible performance increase at all.

apparently not, I still see review sites using RAID 0 in their test beds - as soon as I see it, I just close the browser window

yep, RAID 0 is going to go down as one of the greatest urban myths along side of QuackVipers tweaks.
 
fuck RAID 0 , it's an urbain legend. real world performance gain is non-existent for a home desktop.

I dont think that is true at all, I ahve raid 0 for 2 36gb raptorsa nd I notice a speed difference when in raid 0 and when not, also about 2 seconds when starting games and 5 seconds off my boot up time. I think raid 0 is well worth it

You can live in your little world where RAID 0 is well worth it, but in the real world, it isn't.

If you haven't gotten the hint by now, we'll spell it out for you: there is no place, and no need for a RAID-0 array on a desktop computer. The real world performance increases are negligible at best and the reduction in reliability, thanks to a halving of the mean time between failure, makes RAID-0 far from worth it on the desktop.

No joke, I even got rid of my 2 36 Raptors for them. And they raised the bar quite a notch with the 74s. Ultra happy with RAID0 74GB Raptors

people dont really bash raid 0 itself, but rather the fact that if one drive goes out, you loose ALL the data. which is why raid 0 isnt actually RAID (REDUNDANT array of inexpensive disks)

the risk isnt worth the miniscule performance gains, how hard is it to wait an extra 5 seconds to boot, or 2 seconds for games... but if one drive goes out, the whole thing is gone.... as you know... you can't turn in a paper that has every other letter
 
This is why I have backup drives for the entire RAID0 volume. 1 of my larger drives backs up the RAID0 volume just incase it ever decides to die. The last one never did, I have a feeling this one won't either.
 
as far am i'm concerned... raid0 is only for an OS drive... it doesnt matter to me if windows dies cause of a disk dying... it gives me a good reason to reinstall :D

but as far as my files go. NEVER! i dont even like having a single drive, but i know this one wont fail, so its doing ok. i've litterally got files that are 4 years old. i just graduated from high school... and i've still got reports from freshman year... and while those dont matter to me that much, my nice collection of home movies, music, and various backups and what not totals to just under 200 gb, and if i lost it, i think i'd loose it so to speak
 
I use stiping ("RAID 0" as was pointed out, is not really RAID)
for work space when I need a large amount of fast space for
a particular project. The source files & results get copied
back to my other drives when it's done.

What he said... I had 2 36 's in RAID 0. After I lost my data 3 times, I went to a single 74. Its MUCH better and FASTER for my application. (gaming, surfing)

Video encoding is CPU limited on my athlon xp 3200, and not hard drive limited. What sort of encoding are you doing, and on what equipment? And what do you mean by working with large files? When muxing video and audio tracks, two or more separate raptors are much faster than a single RAID0 array, in my experience. Just curious.
 
yeah from my experience, if your accident prone just buy a sleeved power supply. It took me way too long to sleeve mine and i ended up exploding it like 2 days after i had finished the job (open wire touched the bottom of my case).

Raid 0 is not a "RAID" its a "AID" There is no Redundant anything in a raid 0 If you are moving large files like 4 + gig VOB files its worth it to put it in a raid or AID 0 with a 128k stripe, I have had 10's of minutes shaved off in moving big files, which helps production alot. We have IBM Tivoli storage manager to backup our drives so mirroring is really not in the books. Plus this stuff is not mission critical that needs to be up 24/7 so we can wait for the restore to take place.

Mirror raid1 is good if you can not afford to lose data or wait for a backup to restore. But if your data is really that critical you would be set in a cluster mode to an identical server/workstation, so that not even a piece of hardware like a lan card or other devices go out on you, you will still be up and running.
