I built the computer in signature using video card, sound card, netgear wireless adapter and hard drive from my old computer that died. I have all the chipset drivers and antivirus updated and everything and this windows 7 install is only like 4 days old. Why would different programs already say not responding? Windows such as right clicking on My Computer and going to properties will stall and say not responding from like 3 seconds to permanently unresponsive where I have to click X to close or sometimes have to go to task manager to force close.. Chrome will often say not responding too. Downloading Memtest86 as I type this to check RAM. Is this normal?

*edit* Memtest 86 shows no errors with one pass.

Which AV are you using?
Do you have a spare drive?
 
AV is updated and recently quick-scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Spare drive? I have an extra ide disc drive and extra sata hard drives.

It happens most often (but not always) when I'm installing something and go to do something else like when I went to My Computer Properties while installing Nero 9.
 
Right when I got Windows first booted up something from some piece of hardware had me install Norton 11 but I removed it with the Norton Uninstall tool a few hours later and put on MSE when I saw it was a trial.

Right now there are no signs of Norton anywhere. At least in Programs list and when I search for Norton.

This unresponsiveness has only happened about 5 times in the past 4 days so it's not that often but I didn't think it would really happen at all.
 
Well if you have a spare drive with zero data on it, remove your raptor drive, put in the spare drive, install Windows 7 in that 30 day trial mode (just don't put in the serial key), and see if the issue still occurs with that hard drive. Don't install Norton at all.

Yes. I just did exactly that a few days ago to test out some software.

Just don't insert the serial key and it'll default to the 30 day trial.
 
I'm now using a seagate 7200.9 rpm 160 gb sata. I'm going to Creative and Nvidia to get latest video card and sound card drivers. What is the best way to remove the default Windows drivers that it installed for video and sound card, click on Uninstall driver (Advanced) in Device Manager for both devices? Or should I just leave these windows drivers alone and just download vid and sound card drivers and install them..

Leave them alone and install the sound card drivers.

Actually, remove the sound card card, leave it out for now.
 
I just had a complete freeze with this hard drive where everything locked up on desktop and had to hit reset button on computer.. And my monitor has lost signal 2-3 times with this drive now.. It just turns off randomly and have to reset button to get a reboot and the monitor will come back on. I'll take out sound card for now and just have network and video card. I think that shitty wiring at my old apartment killed all these cards i'm trying to use or something.
 
hmm, sound card out now, and i went back to the raptor for a sec to test it but I'm prrreetty sure it just randomly rebooted itself for no reason a second ago on this raptor.

Hmm still on raptor drive and since then put sound card back in and did web updates for it I noticed I hadn't done before. Somehow not getting anymore unresponsiveness but I am getting the same video problems: different monitors losing signal from both DVI connections on video card 9800 GTX. Also while in Battlefield BC2 my screen will occasionally turn all black except for the tiny base and enemy indicators floating around the screen. This video card is the oldest part of my system at this point. Maybe time for a new one.
 
Ok now down at the library to reply lol. Well after having seemingly more problems with the Seagate 160gb drive I had gone back to raptor. Everything was fine, put in sound card and had no problems like the previous post. All of a sudden BSOD. Took out sound card. Booted.. BSOD. Took out video card so all I had is motherboard and wireless network card. BSOD. took out network card.. only thing remaining was motherboard PSU and hard drive (by the way I have BSODed on a different hard drive) and it BSODed. This tells me I should contact Newegg about an RMA for motherboard/CPU
 
Well, got my motherboard/CPU replacement from Newegg. Still getting a lot of stuff not responding. No BSODs though so I can at least use the computer. BTW, this not responding seems to only occur for example when installing a game like bad company 2 and going to open windows explorer... or just now as I had optical drive spinning up I opened windows explorer to make a window to copy stuff into I had to wait like a minute while optical drive window crashed and closed itself.. Is this a common thing I'm being over sensitive about or should I start pulling out these expansion cards..

I didn't RMA my G.Skill 4GB memory and I ->think<- that this could be the problem. A lot of newegg reviews for this motherboard complain that G.Skill is not on the motherboard's QVL list. It is, but not the 4gb all in one stick.

Just kinda lost at the moment. Was gonna post after pulling sound card and video card out of motherboard and trying it that way but was looking for some input. thanks

I already got rid of all the unnecessary startup processes via msconfig. I might even try a different anti virus for now....
