Random temporary lockups on windows 7

Have a dell e6410 that runs mcafee av. Every once in a while the system will randomly lock up for about a second or two and then snap back to normal. When it's frozen nothing works, everything just pauses. It seems like if I hover over items in the menu so the preview pops up and then I move over to a different one this can cause it sometimes. But sometimes it will happen and I'm not even in the previews and it will do it. Anyone ever experienced something like this before or have any ideas?

time for a new hdd.........that is a common symptom of a failed hdd

Anything else it could be? I mean it could be a HDD, but it's a brand new laptop.

Uninstall mcafee av its junk. Use avast or avira .

McAfee does not cause the OP's problems.....it's hardware related and in every single case I have seen, it has ALWAYS been the hdd......

My studio was less than 6 months old when the HDD crashed........and just before it did Windows exhibited the exact same behavior.. I do PC installation and repair and all the machines i have come accross all of the machine freezes were directly related to the hdd controller or a bad sector..

OP if you want to be SURE, get a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring utility

Memtest ran fine, hdd deep scan all passed - no bad sectors.

I would get rid of Mcafee if I could, but it's corporate.

I don't use auto hide, so no problem there.
