Random Crashes

Hi guys,

I've been experiancing random crashes lately and I'm stumped as to why.

They seem to be completely random and having no particular program or system in common.

So this leads me to think it may lay on the blame of a few different subsystems.

1) MB
2) Ram
3) Audio
4) Video
5) Power

I'm running a MSI Neo4 Plat with a AMD 64 3200+

I've got 2GB (512 x 4) of DDR400 ram

My audio card is a SB Audigy 2 value

Video card is a BFG Tech 6800 GT OC

Power was recently upgraded to an Antec 430 watz and that stopped most of the crashes.

Also I periodically have resolution changes for no reason and I am constently having to readjust my display area on the monitor settings. I'm not sure if that is just the monitor or if it could be a tie in to a video card issue.

I'm not OCing currently and just about all BIOS settings are near fact settings.

I've got all the latest drivers/bios for all of my cards and boars.

Any ideas as to what may be causing my crashing?

What kind of RAM timings/speeds are you running at? I'm not sure that the MSI board likes 4 sticks of RAM. At least the review here on Hardocp indicated that the SLI board didn't take too well to it (although no problem on anandtech). Maybe with a BIOS update? Also, the memory controller on the A64 chip isn't going to like 4 sticks of RAM depending on the speeds/timing.

Here is a link to a cpu_z output for my machine.

What I discovered is having the 4 sticks of ram greatly reduced overclock potential.

I've heard that the nForce 3 boards had issues when you added in a audio board does anyone know if this carried over to the nForce 4s?

Also I do have the latest BIOS.

I know you can only run 2T, and not 1T with 4 sticks. Also, you are running with a 166 divider.

Can you try taking out individual pieces (e.g. sound card) to see if it is more stable without it? Actually, I'd try taking out 2 of those 4 sticks of RAM first to see if it's stable. That was the first thing that threw up a red flag when I was reading over your post.

RAM running 2-4-4-7 at 166 mhz that's a little odd.

Also populating all 4 dimm slots might cause stability issues as well, it does on soem boards, it certainly creates performance issues by dropping you to 2T command rate at ddr 400 speeds (which is presumably why you're running at 166?)

That might be the problem right there. If you absolutely need 2 gigs of RAM consider getting 2x1gig dimms instead of 4x512. There are sets out there that will even run at DDR500 with somewhat respectable timings, let alone run DDR400 perfectly. However before you do any of that, remove two of the dimms, allow the bios to set default timings on your ram and run it 1:1 with your FSB. If you still have problems you've eliminated the possibility that it's the RAM (unless they're sh!tty dimms) which seems to be the prime suspect right now.

Try that and post results :D
