Hey, i just recently built my new rig, and during various activites, it will randimly reset. Recently i have been putting together a movie on Adobe Premiere, and while rendering files it will decide to reset. There is no pattern or specific activator, it just, well, does. Please help me out, the DVD is due tomorrow, and i cant clean it up if it's not rendered! im guessing its a mobo problem, and it cant be a driver issue becasue ive checked them all and they all are fine. I'm clueless!!!! Please Help!

It's a new custom A64

A64 3000 or 3200+
gig of ram
evga 128 personal cinema
maxtor 160 gig hd
asus k8n-e mobo

case is ANTEC Sonata, i think its a 380watt

You said it happens when you render and other tasks. Are these other tasks cpu intensive? Could there be a connection between CPU load and the re-setting?

correctomundo

Its when i render videos, export to avi, or when im like listening to music and ripping a cd while using dreamweaver and stuff, so id say its cpu intensive. But i went through carefully installing it, and the heatsinks on there with AS5, so i mean, does this mean i have to go and buy a zalman?

Diable automatic reboots.

1) Click start.
2) right-click My Computer
3) From the resulting context menu, select "Properites"
4) Activate the "Advanced" tab
5) Press the "Settings Button" in the "Startup and Recovery" box
6) Unmark the "Automatically Restart" checkbox

This should cause you to get a blue screen. The Blue screen will include information about what's causing the crash, if it's a software or driver problem.

You might also already have information in your event log.

While rendering, listening to music, and using photoshop cs, the cpu was at 32c and the mobo at 34c! thats using asus PC probe..... plus, whats a threshold? cause on the cpu page, its above the average, but on the fans its below....... im confused?

AHHHHH

i have the reply in a log, but ill do the disable thing anyways.... and i already resent the bios...

wah.

AHHHHH

Weird, cpu temp is almost allways abouve case (mobo) temp. there should be 2 threasholds for each setting, one upper and one lower. They are bascially upper and lower acceptable limits.

heres what the blue screen gave me:

PFN LIST CORRUPT

Technical INFO

Mabe this will help, I would check your memory by using memtest. Then double check your drivers.

Bugchecks Explained: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
OSR Staff | Published: 24-Aug-04| Modified: 24-Aug-04

What Happened?

Windows tracks physical pages of memory using a table called the Page Frame Database. This database (which actually is just a big one-dimensional array) is indexed by physical page number. As a result, the page frame database is typically referred to as the Page Frame Number list or PFN.

Every page of physical memory has an associated PFN entry. Each PFN entry contains information about the state of its corresponding physical page in the system. This state includes information about whether the corresponding physical page is in use, how it’s being used, a count of active users of the page, and a count of pending I/O operations on the page.

Depending on the pages state, a PFN entry may be on one of several lists that the Memory Manager maintains. The listheads for these lists are simple global variables that are used for quick access to PFN entries of certain types. For example, one such list would be the list that contains all the modified pages that need to be written to disk.

Because all the PFN lists and entries are present in the high half of kernel virtual address space, they are subject to corruption through stray pointer accesses (such as by errant drivers or other similar kernel-mode modules). Also, the count in the PFN that tracks the number of I/O related accesses to a given physical page can be corrupted by improper MDL handling.

Whenever Windows detects that any of the PFN lists or any of the PFN entries themselves have become invalid, the system halts with a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT bugcheck.......................

^^^ that poster just beat me.

That error points to a page file/memory error. I'd recomend you download and install memtest86 on to a floppy, boot it and see how your ram checks out.

yo no tengo un floppy drive,(i dont have a floppy drive) but will a usb drive work? if not i have like a bazillion cds so one can sacrifice itself for the good of mankind

You can put it on a cd as well. In fact, if you are goign to be burning a diagnostic cd you may as well go out and burn a copy of the "Ultimate Boot CD" just google for UBCD and you will find it.

Will zee UBCD have the memtest on it? cause im trying to make a floppy of the memtest and i such at the command line........

ahh, and the it does have the underscores, y laptop is just special and cant do that button along with the apostrophe and six key :p

The blue screen really is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT, but the message you show from your event log is different. It's a STOP 0x0000000a.

You can find help for troubleshooting that in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Here are a couple of articles:

Troubleshooting a Stop 0x0000000A error in Windows XP

General Information on STOP 0x0000000A

And you could always do a search of the KB yourself.

Where do you get 0x0000000A? the OP stated it was a PFN error and 0x0000004E matches that.

I though you didnt have a floppy?

Anyhow, yes the UBCD does have memtest on it, and many other things which you may find usefull later in your computer travles.

ahh, yes i don't, i was using my old usb drive thats like 16mb, but with my knowledge, i bet its impossible. Ahh well, making the UBCD...

From this post, where he shows his event log record that says "BCCode a".

The log event records use a different format than the blue screen does, but they show the same information.

dum dum dum duuuummmm, the ubcd is done, and im gonna go test. you guys are great, keeping up with me. i wish i was that patient.

its been on for awhile, and nothings really happened? how long does that bad boy take?

You should let it run 2 full passes or so. There should be an indicator of how many full passes have been made somewhere on screen.

It depends on how much memory you have and how fast your system is. I think it has 8 tests per pass. If you can go 3 or 4 passes without a error your memory is probably ok. Memtest will keep on running until you reboot the computer.

Memtest should run for at least 24 hours to really beat the crap out of the memory. Only then will you be sure you have no errors.

I once had a mem problem that was only evident after 60 some passes

The error says its ment for NT and 2000 or widnows server..........i have xp pro........... the only thing i can think of is when i first was going to install my OS, i forgot you couldnt upgrade server 2k to xp, so i was stuck with that on there. I eventually took it off, and installed Windows 98 and then upgraded to XP Pro......The KB says something about a AFD.SYS file.. idk what it is or what to do.........waaaa

COME ON! I THINK WERE GETTING THERE!

i understand lol, but the thing is, im getting a PFN LIST CORRUPT and 0x0000004E, which it lists as a Windows 2000 problem.

i am running XP Pro.

How the heck.

thanks, and sorry for being annoying, im just in a hurry to get something real important done in which i have like 3 hours left to do on.
