I ran the HL2 benchmark utility and got and average of 167FPS @ 800*600 resolution. What do you think? Would these number be on par for my computers specs (1st on in sig)
thanks

try it at 1600x1200 and report back

Seconded.

BTW I'd say that's about right lol, pretty nice graphics card and cpu you got there.

Why don't you go to 1024x768 and turn on aa and af.

Ok, I ran it @ 1280*1024 and got an average of 162FPS. Not much of a difference between the 2 resolutions.

wow i ran at 1280x1024, everything high with 2xAA/4xAF and got 120, ran it again with LOW textures no AA/AF, same res and I got 125. WTF?

Dont get pissed, I didn't use ANY AA or AF. The game looks so good anyways, why use it?

because those numbers/letters look cool and everyone uses them. And sorry for "hijacking" this thread but I ran the VST with the same settings as you except with LOW detail and got 103fps.

I guess you're probably joking, but AF and AA both make very noticable visual quality differences when they are in use. If you can't tell, you either need to look at some same-place shots with them enabled/disabled, or get new glasses ;) :).

I average 75-95 FPS(depending on the level) at 16x12, 4xAA/16xAF, all max detail - even the driver tab is set to max detail.

That might be true, but only in your own opinion. If I like the way the game looks without enabling AA or AF, then my gift is more FPS.

Do you notice a difference between 120 and 125 FPS? I don't think so. If I could get 125 FPS on low textures or 90 on everything turned on, I'll go for the 90 because I want the game looking great and in my opinion, anything over 65 or so FPS is perfect. I run Unreal 2004 on medium settings 40-45FPS, and its decent, I can only imagine how running HL2 with 120 is.

I dont understand that UT2004 thing? You only get 45 FPS? WTF. UT2004 studders ALOT for me, but I get more than that.

Sorry, forgot to mention I have a GeForce 3 Ti200, 256mb of RAM, and P4 1.7ghz :D

That VST seems right for your computer. If you came from CS 1.6, I think 800x600 would be a popular resolution since that was what most of the best players used. Some even used 640x480 and none would ever go above 1024x768. I still play at higher resolutions since I came from MOH, where resolution didn't affect your game that much. With 1.6, resolution made a huge difference in your gameplay.

what is this AA and AF I've been hearding around? I also play HL2 and where can I turn those on? Sorry for a noobie question. :)

why would they use such low resolutions? todays hardware runs it insanely fast at really high res, why still use 800x600?

I dunno, probably extra insurance against those firefights to make sure your fps doesn't drop below *gasp* 60 fps. I remember in cs the crosshair was bigger or something, I didn't notice much of a difference, but i'm not a hardcore gamer.

Yes, to be honest, I play alot of games @ 800*600 resolution, just to make sure that I get the most FPS that I can get. If the game looks good @ that RES, im happy. :)

Dude you'll get badass FPS reguardless of your resolution. I can understand 1600x1200 with no AA or no AF and even 1280x1024. 800x600 looks like shit. You can achieve 160FPS with a lesser video card than the expensive monster in your machine at 800x600. Those resolutions it's your CPU doing the bulk of the work.

Why waste a high end video card?

I'm an FPS whore too, but I want good visual quality, smoothness. So I don't run AA and AF as high as alot of other people do. In some games I run 1280x1024 instead of 1600x1200 just to pick up a few more FPS. UT 2004 I do that with. HL2 runs badass on a 3.4GHz P4 and a 6800GT at 1600x1200 with 2xAA and 8xAF. The Ultra would be better.

Not using your Geforce 6800Ultra at 1280x1024+ resolutions with some AA and AF is like using a Ferrari F550 to run down the street to the post office and no where else.

Running a 6800Ultra at 800x600 is like getting a Ford GT to drive Ms. Daisy to the grocery store.

Don't know how, or why...

But my comp plays HL2 smooth as butter (with occasional stuttering from loading new files) at 1600x1200, high detail, but no aa or af :)

Running on:
AXP 3000
512MB PC2100 @ 2-2-2-9
Radeon 9700Pro
