Rampage IV Multiple Issues

I'm not sure what to do with this information. Same Eyefinity setup functioned perfectly with my prior Asus ASUS P6T DELUXE V2 motherboard.

What are next steps? Will you run this by Asus engineers?

I will ask HQ to replicate, not sure what they can do to patch, so no promises from me that they will be able to sort it.

Thanks Raja, you guys have been great. Let me know if you like to run other combinations I have not tried. At this point I do not think there are any :)

I will stick to posting on the rog board going forward and will update this thread once the solution is found.
 
Just had a crazy thought. There has been a prob with the X79 mobo since they can run so much RAM - 32GB to 64GB. Guys have installed 60 or 80GB even 120GB SSD's, then try to install a big program and they get the message - no space left on HDD, and they cant figure out why. It turns out Win 7 page file can take up to 4X RAM in auto mode, and when Win 7 was coded MS wasnt aware of 64GB RAM loads on consumer mobo..
So you start with an 80 GB SSD, >22GB is the Win 7 install, 9GB for the 3 Vidcard reservation, then the hiberfil 12GB and the pagefile. The answer to this prob was to set pagefile manually to 3000 min 5000 max. Another guy transfered the pagefile to another non sys partition, one guy also deleted the hiberfil.

So try this - put in 2 vidcard, start running the internet, open up Adobe Acrobat, start the taskmanager/performance tab, crank up the 2 cards full blast and see just how much RAM you have left usable.

Adding the third card with its 3GB may be the dealbreaker

wow, I have been on the computer help forums for more than 12 years now and in that time you are easily the most hard core enduser builder I have ever run into.

Update, Shamino and the team from Asus were able to replicate the problem. In short, it was caused by out of spec displayport cables. Pin 20 was used, but should not have been connected. It was leaking voltage into the video cards.

Thanks Shamino, Raja, and Mason for helping to resolve this issue! It is so rare nowadays to get this type of attention and support from a large corporation.
 
so, the "out of spec" DP cable borked the PCIe bus to disable/overload/shutdown the USB 3.0 ports? After new cable the ports came back?

as I mentioned in prior post there seem to be three levels of DP cables avail. What are you actually doing about the cables with extra pin?

I temporarily snipped the pin 20 wire. This got me going for now. Also, ordered another set from ebay prior to finding out the root cause. If these do not work I will get the following, they should be in spec...

It does not bork the PCIe bus per se. The cable supplies power to the 3.3V rail via the GPU because pin 20 connects straight to the 3.3V power rail on the PCI connector. As the power leaks back into the 3.3V rail, any device connected to the 3.3V rail will receive power when it should not, and this messes up initialization and reset sequences.

Quick quesiton: Does the Rampage IV need both the 4 pin and eight pin hooked up or can you run it with just the eight pin?

(ASUS Response: In regards to comments on the decision to implement a secondary 4pin vs. another 8 pin this was made due to practical reasoning. There is no electrical reason to implement dual 8 pin in our testing we found no value even at the upper end of extreme enthusiast testing that this would be required. As such this was not implemented on the board. In addition the top of the VRM assembly as I am sure you have noticed is quite tight so any space that can be conserved is highly valuable. Additionally our entirely new Extreme Engine Digi+ VRM design has a very high level of efficiency allowing us to maximize power delivery.)

They were generic cables from eBay. If you Google displayport pin 20 it seems like this issue can span brands. I took a chance and replaced the old cables with another set from eBay wich works without any issues.
