RAM for an outdated but free dell inspiron 1100

It's been proven(outside source) that 1GB 1STICK RAM works on the intel chipset. Of course two 512MB totaling 1GB from 2STICKS RAM works.

Is one more beneficial then the other?

on a second note...........

Also in the same thread...... he tried upping the RAM beyond dells recommended Capability. Adding one 128MB stick in addition to a 1GB stick ram. It worked. Also while researching Intel support informed that on their model chipset it supports up to 2GB ram. However dell support(sucky by comparison) says 1GB
Opinions??

what proc if its a northwood p4a-e i think it would only affect hyperthreading but its a freebie so .............

you can leave 1 slot open.. though its recommended that your run the same speed sticks otherwise it will run all of them at the slowest stocks speed.. so if you say have 1 ddr2 800 stick and a ddr2 533.. it will run both at 533.. same goes for older ddr.. odds are what dell is saying is that the board will only support 1GB or smaller sticks of ram.. not that it only supports 1GB total.. but thats just my guess..

Thanks for the insight.

I took the safe route last night, in a hurry to take advantage of st. patrick coupon on ebay, and ordered two 512MB PC2700 333MHz stcks. However they do take returns.

Also to ALL thanks for the quick reply's. Please keep checking back I enjoy learning.

Having a slot open is ok. You should see if you can update the bios available as it might allow different memory configs.

I don't think 2x512mb or 1x1GB would make a difference. The 845 chipset isn't dual channel (IIRC), so either one should work. 2x1GB would be the best, but I'm not sure how much memory you'd need with an older processor like that anyway.
