Raidmax Smilodon

i dont really like raidmax anymore, there cases look good but they arent as sturdy as they used to be, even though i own a raidmax ninja

Hmmm, your right. It's not a BAD looking case. In fact, it's kinda funky really.

Iunno, I've had one of their cases before and it was pretty good, It came all bolted together so it was fully customizable. No rivets = awesome.

Um, if done right that case could have some major potential IMO... Like, a higher-tech look. Nothing classy like a LiLi (or stacker/stacker clone).

The flip down mobo tray is a huge positive.

**Edit** WTF, why choose "Smilodon"? I dont think that case has ANYTHING to do with the relatives of the sabre tooth tiger lol...

What do you guys think of this: Raidmax Smilodon ?

It's not a bad-looking case.

I've been looking at this case for a little while now, and while I lilke how it looks the lack of support for 120MM fans is a big minus in my opinion. On the flip side of things, I do the flip-down motherboard tray is an awesome idea. ToastMaster, why not order this case and post a review?

Actually on second thought I may even order this case and post a review. :D

I like it.

RaidMax cases are about the only ones where the damn door opens the proper direction...to the RIGHT.

Why would you want your window on the left and your door opening to the left is beyond me, but 99% of cases are that way.

What's your take on the lack of support for 120mm fans? I guess I could drill some holes and mount a bigger fan or I think there's an 80mm to 120mm fan adapter.

You know, while I'd rather have a 120 mm fan in the front, I think that you can compensate for it with the 80mm intake on the front right side. While it'll create somewhat strange airflow, air can directly cool the hard drives.

I was thinking of removing the left-sided fan support bar, since I don't like how it obstructs the window (I want to be able to view my Core 2 system :D ), and modding the fan directly onto the window.

Edit - The first time I even saw this case FYI was at my local Fry's. With shipping, the case is only slightly more expensive at Frys, which is where I'm thinking of picking it up.

It's a downer, but not a deal breaker. I do most of my cooling with my Koolance Exos anyways.

I like the case, it has a good look to it. Not too much bling bling, but nice little details, and like I said, the door for me HAS to open to the right, NOT the left, so Raidmax cases are always some of my favorites.

This is the case I am running right now myself, Raidmax X1 For my boy's PC, they have a Coolermaster Centurion that I bought after I got my X1. I like it better and would get one for me if I decided to rebuild my PC.

It's not a bad looking case if you like your cases a tad gaudy looking - some poeple like that look. I just built a system for a customer with this new rosewill case and it looks really nice for $29.95. It was her choice but i was actually quite suprised at how good it looked once set up.

That's a cheap TT Tsunami/Antec SLK3700AMB, interesting.

Apparently it's pretty recent, and i just ordered 2 more (black versions this time).

My ATC-110 opens to the right :D

As for the Smilodon, the name makes me think of a dinosaur that can't keep a grin off of it's face. I like it, but I don't like how they plastered the name of the case across the front of it.

If by dinosaur, you mean sabre-toothed cat, then maybe you're right :p

Not sure if I like that case or not. The whole crossbar thing is kinda of pointless. I also dislike windows in cases, if it had a full panel I might order one of those. I just want something simple, but it seems I have to spend a fortune on a Lian Li to get a simple elegent case.

I don't like it, and I mean come on, 1 80mm rear exhaust fan, get with the times.

I've never seen a case as perfect as this one. Fully loaded, has every function you desired. It a superb deal now, its only cost you as some cheap case. You can pay Toyota but get a Mercedes.... <--lol

I don't think it looks too much like the MainGear LiLi custom you linked it to. maybe it's just me... ?

I think its just the name down the left side of the front, for some reason it made me think of the other one. It doesn't look a whole lot like it other than that. :(

Actually, it does have a 120mm fan in the front. You can see it on the Raidmax product page. As far as the back goes, it appears there's enough room for a decent modder to enlarge the 80mm hole for a 120mm fan, if they were so inclined. :)

I like some of the stuff about the case, the mobo tray is a huge plus. Also, check out the front led's for multiple hdd activity. That's more of a "nice to have" than a "gotta have", but it's a nice touch. One user at Newegg said that they had problems getting the side fan for the video card put in place when they put their heatpipe-cooled video card in a certain slot, so that's something to keep in mind.

All in all, not a bad case. The biggest downer, for me, is the steel construction. Would be nice to see them do this in aluminum, which would knock the weight in half (or less).

Not a bad case. The inside looks strong enough. The outside looks nice. Although I could do without the name down the front. WTF is Smilodon anyway. I say get it.

alot of discussion, no real review.

i'm not a fan of that bar that goes across the window. i do however think the case has some mod potential.

the main gear case, linked earlier, looks nothing like this case. and i actually like the raidmax better than the maingear.

for the price, keep looking if your not sure. you have alot of cases to choose from if your willing to mod them yourself. cheaper case + more mods = better case to fit your personality.

Alright the case isnt all that bad, I mean I have seen a ton of cases that are more stylistically challenged than this one. With the exception of two rather glaring problems..

1. The name. Smilodon (and the fact that it is printed on the case)

2. WTF is DIRK-TOOTH. And why did they have to put that shit on the side of the case. Makes me think of snaggle tooth. What does it mean? Dirk...Tooth. Computer Case. Dirk...Tooth. Computer Case. The connection is lost on me.

That's what gets me about some of the manufacturer's, why do they have to put stupid crap on their chasis. I still get a kick out of thermaltake's "Cool all of your life".

WaveMasters open to the right... Matter o' fact, most, if not all, of the ATCS line did.

My first and second PCs were based on Raidmax cases (Scorpio, Samurai) and I never had any issues with them, so I'm not going to assume there are any major bugs creeping around this one. The front bezel kinda throws me off, and as a personal thing I don't like the tool-free drive bay installation, but those minor factors aside I think it looks pretty nice. Certainly a good buy in the functionality department, given its size.

I ordered one and I will have it on Thursday. Hopefully I will have time to post a review this week.

I was at the Tempe Frys, and they've put one on display.

I thought I'd give my initial impressions:

the case is heavier than I thought it would be, and generally the sides and front panel had a rather well-built feeling to them. The front panel itself opens to the right, as noted, and the bulk of it is a thick plastic that appears to be rather durable. The front panel "seals" shut via two small magnets. Also, the silver portion of the front panel is actually aluminum, and for some reason the wording along the side doesn't seem quite as obnoxious in person as it appeared online.

There's an 80mm fan in the front, along the hard drive bay on the right side, the two on the left side (only one if you remove the Dirktooth panel) and then the rear. They're all 80mm, and I know some people were concerned about it not having 120 mm fans in the front and back, but I think the combination of the one in the front, the one on the right side, one/two on the left side, and the rear should help to cool the case relatively well.

The Dirktooth panel is removable, although it can be slightly tricky - it uses two "clip-in" areas on each end to essentially snap it it, and the bar itself is metal. Pushing the two clips in one side seemed easy, although there were Fry's employees walking around so I didn't want to completely remove it.

Both sides feature the tilt-down method that the motherboard tray is known to have. It uses a spring system to pull the latches down across the top of the side panels. It looked relatively durable for long-term usage.

The interior looked relatively clean. However, be warned that it looks as if the intererior appears to be laid down around giving an ATX board a rather "just right" fit, so that you'd have to be somewhat creative in wire management to hide them, or also if you wanted to water cool.

This is all I can think of for what I saw at the moment. If anyone has other questions, I think I could likely answer them. I spent about 5-10 minutes each checking out both this and the black Stacker Fry's now has. The Doc will probably be posting his obviously far-more hands-on review anyway. :)

While I will be receiving my case today I'm currently not at home right now. For those who are interested in a review I will try to post one as soon as I can.

I know this thread's a little old, but are there any other cases that have a similar flip-down motherboard tray? I don't mean slide-out, either...

Thanks :)

Haahahah this was exactly what i was thinking! Lack of at least one 120mm rear exhaust fan is enough reason for me to pass on this case. Dirk-tooth....hahhhahhhaha

The case looks pretty nice.
If only it had a 120mm rear exhaust.

Oh well, could easily mod one in.

I can't find anyone selling to Canada though.

Ok,

I have this Raidmax and for a mid tower I like it. For the components I got, it is a little snug. I have the Coolermaster Hyper TX2 that takes up alot of room.

Heavy, yes.
I have the 120mm in the front
2 80mm on the left side. (right now the top is an outtake)
1 80 on the left (that also outtake, might change)
and the infamouse 80mm in the back.

I agree that their should be a 120mm in the back. However with my specs which I need to update, it does run cool. I do not overclock though, so I'm guessing if you do, think twice.

2 8800gt's
Core duo 6850
2 gig Cosair xtreme
850 CoolerMaster 850 PS
Asus P53N sli-e board

The "dirktooth" bar is a little annoying, and I would rather have had the fan on the window like the top one. Not sure what the purpose is.

I'm coming from a ATX Dreamer II case that is a little smaller than this Raidmax. Loved the cooling on that one too.

I was reading this hoping for a good review and completely got side tracked by the dirktooth rant.........................

ROFLMFAO

Great post
