RAID - Do they have to be the same drives?

This may be a stupid question, and I believe the answer is No, however I just want to confirm...when doing a RAID mirrored array (or any RAID for that matter) do the drives have to be the same manufacturer/model?

Long story short, as declared from another thread, one of my Samsung 1TB drives is on the way out. I want to replace it with another 1TB drive and can do the Samsung again however since it failed in under 1 year and there are other, possibly more reliable drives available at a cheaper cost, I'd like to go that route. With that said, could I throw in a 1TB WD or Seagate drive providing it's the same RPM?

I'm using the Intel onboard RAID on my P8P67.

No, they don't HAVE to be, but in most cases it improves performance, especially in the case where there is one slower drive in an array of faster drives. Replacing an older drive with a modern one (that's likely faster) isn't likely to cause much issue.
 
What about having 6 drives in raid 5 such as;

2 tb 7200 32mb WD Black
2 tb 5400 64mb Hitachi
2 tb 5400-7200 64mb WD Green
2 tb 7200 64mb Seagate
2 tb 5400 32mb Samsung
2 tb 5400 32mb Samsung

?

I'm curious how it would all play out in that sort of setup.
 
it should work... i havent mixed speeds and cache sizes though...

one thing to be aware of, some manufactures have 2tb drives, but sizes can be a but differnt.. so you might not want to use the absolute max available space.. instead of 2T use like 1.9 or so.. I had a friend run into a problem when he set up his array with 5 drives then added 5 more from a differnt manu - he had to copy the data off and restart... just saying

The array will take the lowest characteristic of any parameter (size, speed, cache) of any of the drives in the array.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm looking for a new 1TB drive, to replace the Samsung F3. Any recommendation? It seems quite popular for these drives to begin failing right after the warranty period.
