Raid 0 old SSD with new?

I have an M4 128GB and recently ordered the M500 960gb.

Would it be a bad idea to Raid 0 the two and create a 256gb main (OS) partition and use the rest for overflow data that won't be accessed as often?

These are different SSDs to begin with and the size disparity makes then even more different. So basically is this a bad idea? Or would there be a noticeable boost in performance? Should I even attempt this?

You will not get a boost in performance. That is unless you load GB files all day. More likely a slight performance loss that you will not notice.

A much simpler idea would have been doing this with 2 480GB drives, but I'm imagining you did this for a sale price.
 
Cab you RAID 0 two separate sized drives?

The 128GB has at least 1/2 the IOPS writing anyways being it's a sub 256GB model of old. If you want boot speed use the M500 and sell the M4 and just create a boot partion of 256GB

This. RAID 0 was hardly ever a benefit for desktop use, especially for system partition and even less so with SSDs.

Yes indeed the sale was a good part of it. I infact had no immediate plans to upgrade my SSD. I used 100GB of the M4 for the OS/Main aps and used the rest as cache with Intel's Rapid Response tech.

I recently did a test to see how fast my computer starts with just the SSD plugged in versus SSD + HDD. And there was a considerable difference (HDD plugged in increased the boot time by over 50%)

I had a hunch I knew what the problem was and this test proved it. The HDD spinning up was holding back the entire boot process. It also did the same thing when resuming from sleep. So it went like this "Oh sweet it resumed from sleep in ~1 second! Oh... nope, it's frozen until the HDD is ready".

So the sale, a fix for the above "issue" and a recently opened credit card with a $400 bonus just forced me to do it. I had no choice, really :rolleyes:.

You can raid whatever drives/drive sizes you want, but in the case of performance raid it is not always worth it as explained by the replies here.

Size disparity makes no difference but the bigger drives are always faster and RAID will always work at the slowest drive's speed.

I always run SSDs in RAID 0 and can notice the difference but as usual adding more than two drives brings you to a point of diminishing returns.

I don't understand the response here. The issue is the M4 has 1/2 the iOPS as the M500 so to raid 0 that would be counter productive to a single M500. M500 is simply faster on its own.

I raid 0 two samsung 512 Pros and I get close to 1GB seq read/writes so it's worth it in this case and i don't care about disk failure.
