Hi Guys,

I have 2 sata drives i'm interested in partitioning. Is there any way I can set Raid 0 for only 1 partition and then use the other partitions normally, or possibly a 2nd partition as raid 1 setup as matrix..then the rest of the partitions as normal drives?

Is this even a possibility? Or will both drives along with all the partitions made have to be in raid 0? Pardon my ignorance, but I'm still "sort-of" new to raid...

windows software raid works on volumes, i.e. you can have only part of a disk be in a raid-set. Windows XP does not support RAID-1 though, however you could have part of two disks in a RAID-0 volume.

I also heard that the Intel "matrix raid" allows you to do what you'd like to do. I have no experience with that.

I use Matrix Raid. Thats what you want. (So long as you have a Matrix Raid Controller (ICH*R))

I have 2 x 320Gb, 598Gb actual. Of that 500Gb is reserved for Raid0 and I have 48Gb mirrored for backups.

Its freaking AWESOME. I'm thrilled with the performance, very noticable, and I have a fast redundant backup system

yeah, I have the p5b-e, and that has ICH*R for matrix raid.

One more question. I plan on putting my os and programs on raid 0 (a given), and the rest of my backup files, mp3s, video, pr0n..(jk.. well.. not really..haha) on different partitions. If my raid 0 ever fails or windows becomes corrupt, will I run into any problems reinstalling windows with raid?

I did something similar to this before, and I all the drive letters on my old partitions changed drive letters, and I had to do the whole setup all over again, having to backup all files and stuff on 2 external drives. :( I just dont want to run into this prob again.

Thats how mine is setup

C: is stripped 500GB RAID0
M: is mirrored 48GB RAID1

I installed windows on C: but set both up to be bootable and have a copy of windows on both. Important files, backup stuff, good pron whatever are on M:

But for normal running, games, movies etc, is all C:

i noticed a couple with with a much smaller raid 1 mirrored drive. isn't it supposed to have the same size at what it's mirroring?

I've got 2x320Gb drives, thats actually 596GB real space

So, thats 500 for RAID0 and 96 left over

96GB across the two drives is 48GB mirrored.

You can set it to whatever you want, I went with 96/48Gb b/c I figured even though I don't have 48Gb of important data right now. Work changes so I might at some point. Plus, I've been working, gaming with, downloading movies on an 80Gb drive for the last 3 years, I think 500 with last me awhile.

If I do anything to upgrade I'm sure I'll just add 1 more Seagate .10 320Gb. That might be a bitch to do though. Don't know
