Rage is awesome

Since there are plenty of "Rage sucks/blows/liptstick on a pig/ate my children and abused me while I was asleep" threads, I figured I'd post one for people who like the game and care to bring out the brighter points of the game. Think it's only fair because if I went based off what some people said in the other thread(s), I'd have been brought think it was the worst game ever created.

That aside, I am loving the boderlands-esque feel to the gameplay and I honestly think it improves upon certain elements that were lacking in borderlands. The ammo types and secondary weapons really give you the options to use whatever you want for a particular situation. I definitely feel immersed (have felt that way before and after the patch, just to get that out of the way, because I used common sense and had almost -zero- issues as a result of said common sense) and genuinely interested where the story is going. Admittedly, I am not very far in but I have put in about 7 hours so far.

The mini-games (particularly racing) definitely lets you get away from the rest of the game for awhile. The world is very nice graphics-wise too, though I also admit that is not at the top of the priority list for me. I don't feel like "Oh, another place like this" as far as the texture go. There are a few problem spots for texture detail but nothing that drives me to the point of, no pun intended, "rage" as if someone just attacked my family.

All in all I am having fun in all aspects of the game thus far and I definitely think it's worth the money I spent on it. Though if the game type (if you've played borderlands, for example) is not your cup of tea, you could probably wait till a sale and give it a shot.

Game was damn good IMO. I don't think it was worth my $60, but $40 would be a great price point for it.

Then again I'm probably saying that because I just beat it and the last 3rd of the game felt much more rushed then the rest. The last area was short and way too easy. But even with that fault I had a blast. Many awesome moments.

Like when a Gearhead flanked/snuck up on me and nailed me in the back with a bat while saying "peekaboo!" in a russian accent. I was rolling :p

Also, those of you still having issues after the patch, delete your custom config files.Worked fine for me after that (I left in the +fov command though).

Once I fixed the 20 odd issues I was having with patches, beta drivers, config tweaks and god knows what else, I finally managed to find something in that mess that was a decent game. And a good few hours of gameplay later and I was actually enjoying myself quite a lot.

Try and get at least as far as the TV broadcast part where you get a sponsor that was brilliant fun, a sort of fun house of horrors which was cool to test out my new guns and ammo with.

One quick tip for that part, you're rated on accuracy and fists don't count towards accuracy so very carefully get off one single shot (make sure you score a hit) so you have 100% accuracy with the guns, and then switch to fists and take everyone down, which is easy, then you'll get a max accuracy bonus which gives you a nice cash injection, you can run through that place twice doing that to earn some serious cash and get all the upgrades.

I just got around to playing it for the first time tonight and I have to say I had alot of fun. I mean sure I wish the textures were higher res but overall the game has a classic id feel. Which is to say it is polished and solid feeling. I experienced no odd bugs although I do see the textures load when turning here and there at times. Again not a big deal. Game looks nice and is fun, period.

Would be awesome to see id make the PC the lead platform again but as is game is Still good fun. I don't regret the 60 bucks.

I'm enjoying it. Yes it has issues (some of which have been fixed), but it's still a solid game. It could have been MUCH better but I knew it was going to have some limitations due to it being developed with consoles as the lead platform from the very beginning.

Yea I hope so, despite the fact that I like Rage, I still see it as an inherent issue that keeps occuring nowadays.

Rage post patches/tweaks...

I've been playing it a good bit over the weekend. The textures on objects in the environment can be really bad and low res, somewhat disappointing but not game breaking for me. I personally didn't have the texture popping issue even at release. The most it ever happened to me was when I stood in one place and spun around several times as fast as I could it would see the occasional pop on the edge of the screen. Of course that was simple to see if I could make it happen not in normal gameplay. Many people have had significant improvements with the issue after the driver updates/cfg tweaks and perhaps even the patch. Which gets us into actually playing the game.

I've actually enjoyed playing once I got past the first mission. I find the arsenal and various ammunitions to be very diverse and fun to use. The electro bolts being very economical in water soaked areas whereas the sniper rifle is useful in so many places. But the shotgun with buckshot has been my go to weapon of choice. I've probably put 2000 rounds through that thing. The Monster Bash TV episode was lots of fun and I really enjoyed that enough to play through several times. It is a good money maker as well.

I find driving in the open between missions quite enjoyable. I just wish there was more area to explore. The races are great for a laugh and while not being completely too easy aren't frustratingly difficult. One of the hardest things for games is driving with the keyboard, in some games it is difficult to get a partial turn going sometimes but they handle it fairly well in Rage.

Overall a 7.5/10 for me so it is really worth buying for me. I saw a lot of little things like Crazy Joe wearing a Doom Tshirt, a poster in one of the Malls for Quake 5/Rage 2 and the most bizare thing so far...a hookah with the demon from Doom 2 start screen on it.

My launch options:
+cvaradd g_fov 30 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 16 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0 +vt_maxPPF 64

Spent the better portion of 4 hours playing RAGE today and I must say, despite the initial issues (odd 20 second pauses? wtf? - fixed via launch options and config), it is indeed an enjoyable experience thus far. Definitely leaning toward being one of the few games of late that I actually finish if nothing game breaking occurs.

The thing I like about this game is you can carry unlimited items and weapons, unlike these "realism" FPS being released today.

Yea I was worried at first when I saw the inventory system but it's pretty painless. I mean, in certain games it makes sense (eg. DXHR) but often it's implemented just for the sake for penalty.

It has it's shortcomings and the story does not connect at all in any emotional level...it's pretty much a vehicle for the game. The Shooting on the other hand is the best I have experienced in a long long time. The Weapons are so well done with the alternative ammo and the gameplay is very diversified--from duck and cover, to sniping to all out circle strafing rockets to the FACE--it has a great balance of these elements.

The animation and artistic world is truly revolutionary and some of these maps are designed so professionally and with a labor of love. If you like Shoot-em ups you OWE it to yourself to experience this game. The fighting gets frantic about half way into the game, the first few instances are decent but as soon as you get to the authority and to subway town it gets so much better! The Mutant Expansion map is so far the best example of just pure visceral FPS joy!

Some of these low reviews from Writers--I have to question if they even like this Genre and maybe that is why there are so many polar reviews because RAGE does have everything and the kitchen sink: from RPG to FPS to RACING--they wanted to quiet their critics but in the end I love how id software did not lose their identity of having the most in your face satisfying FPS combat--they did that RIGHT

Wow, how much did id pay you for this?

The Shooting on the other hand is the best I have experienced in a long long time.

You need to be exposed to some more games. The gameplay is decent. That's about it.

The Weapons are so well done with the alternative ammo and the gameplay is very diversified--from duck and cover, to sniping to all out circle strafing rockets to the FACE--it has a great balance of these elements.

I think I'm playing a different game than you. Which super secret Master version of Rage are you playing?

The animation and artistic world is truly revolutionary

Give me a @#$%ing break.

...and some of these maps are designed so professionally and with a labor of love.

You're killing me here. Some of the level design is alright but this hyperbole is just nuts.

I'll agree that things ramp up and get better at this point in the game but again, I can't sign off on your absurd hyperbole with a straight face.

The Mutant Expansion map is so far the best example of just pure visceral FPS joy!

How much did you get paid for this? Seriously?

Damn. If this isn't one of the best impersonations of either a viral marketer and/or a corporate shill that I've seen in a while I don't know what is.

Someone's got to vet this guy out.

There's one other guy that's been on this forum for a while that was posting stuff as bad or even worse than this even before the game came out that I'm waiting to see show up in this thread and parrot some of this nonsense.

I like the game but c'mon. I LOL'd at some of this tripe. Get real.

If Rage was made some unknown developer, the game might be labeled as pretty decent, but we are talking about the game that was one of the most anticipated in recent years. Knowing that this game is Id's first brand new game in 6 years with brand new engine, this is pretty big let down.
I can understand why Rage came up very short in terms of providing cutting edge graphics, as game was targeted from very beginning to run well on consoles. But what I can't understand is that they were willing to destroy their own reputation as innovators for short-term profit.
I think from now on, any future games from Id will no longer be as hyped as Rage, or any other games that came before it. This was very short-sighted move for Id in my opinion.

It sure as hell is. A bad console port from a company like id is unforgivable.

If it came from some unknown I think it will still be getting some harsh reception because of the high price tag and the fact that it's more or less broken for a number of people.

The graphics are truly subpar for the year 2011 even in a sea of console ports. It is what it is.

The fact that it comes from the likes of id just makes it galling outright.

I can go with that excuse only so far, though.

Think about a good console port vs a bad console port like this. We've seen console ports and multiplatform titles done quite well on the PC. There's simply no excuse for the likes of this.

I totally agree and I think that's a fact not an opinion.

I'm now completely at the point where I don't care who it is, what developer it is...I'm not going to trust sight unseen ever again.

Even Valve may let us down at some point. That's what this has taught me. All bets are off.

it looked pretty decent on my friends computer, sadly my laptop is too slow to play it.

 i thought this was the rage is awesome thread. gtfo and go back to rage sucks.

the issues during launch have been mostly ironed out. the game doesn't look that bad, the character models and most of the environments look stunning. it just blows my mind that people get so hung up on 'visuals' accounting for how 'immersed' they get into the game. i remembering being scared as shit in the original doom and we all know how that game looks.

the action/gun-play is phenomenal if you dig id-style shooters, the animations are top-notch. the sound design is fantastic. the story is what you'd expect from id, but nonetheless the game flows very well.

i'm really looking forward to seeing what the idtech5 engine is capable of in the next few years, i think we'll be seeing some AAA titles come out of it.

anyways, seriously, you're in the wrong thread.

 i thought this was the rage is awesome thread. gtfo and go back to rage sucks.

I would make a "Rage is fairly decent for the most part" thread if it were me. Kind of puts me on the outs doesn't it? The "suck" doesn't quite fit me and the "awesome" genuflecting doesn't work, either.

So at that rate I'll simply continue to post how I like and where I like and there's nothing you can do about it.

I like the game. :) I'm somewhere between "suck" and "awesome."

It's amazing how everything has to be polar extreme these days. No wonder things are going to pot.

But for some folks to iron this out like it's some amazing revolutionary title is just BS. Flat out.

I'll challenge that as much as I'll challenge the people that call this game the next Daiktana. It's all equally garbage.

the issues during launch have been mostly ironed out.

Somewhat.

the game doesn't look that bad,

Pretty wide open subjective scale there. ;) Some of it does. God forbid you stand close to just about anything.

the character models and most of the environments look stunning.

Sure, some of it looks good. I'd say those two things are probably the strongest areas of the game graphic wise.

it just blows my mind that people get so hung up on 'visuals' accounting for how 'immersed' they get into the game.

You suggested I'm in the wrong thread but I'm not sure if you and some others realize which forum you're on.

A lot of us would like the total package. Awesome gameplay and production values to go with it.

i remembering being scared as shit in the original doom and we all know how that game looks.

I'm not sure I follow your point. You're talking about a game that's how old now?

the action/gun-play is phenomenal if you dig id-style shooters,

It's solid. I like the gameplay. I'm not quite sure I'd call it phenomenal, though.

Agreed.

Quit trying to be a forum nazi. You're not any good at it.

All graphics issues aside, I found the game enjoyable and entertaining. The combat is fun, I found myself using the combat shotgun at first, but later on the Authority MG with the laser upgrade started tearing shit up.

The combat shotgun with the explosive ammo (read: grenades) is awesome for taking on the bigger baddies.

I love RAGE. It pissed me off on release, yes, due to texture popping. 12 hours later, that was ironed out, and running beautifully. Then, they pissed me off again when the patch hit. I was playing perfectly, woke up, tried to launch it, and... nothing. Patch broke it, due to needing to disable triple buffering afterward on AMD. So, fixed that, and now it runs even better than previously, even without TB.

So, yes, they made some mistakes on the technical end, but now that this isn't an issue:

The game is NICE! I'll agree that the textures aren't the highest resolution up close, but I'm not one to stare longingly at the effing walls. It looks beautiful in motion, and it's meant to be in motion. It runs perfectly smooth, locked at 60fps on my lowly(ish) 6870 with lots of good CFG tweaks for detail levels.

The audio is excellent.

Now let's toss aside the platform shit. I love the PC. I game on the PC, and I don't own a major console (short of the Wii.) My son has a PS3, but I don't touch it. Do I wish there were more menu options? Of course, but it looks good, and if I really want to get into the guts of it, that's what the CFG is for. If you're going to cry about the lack of menu features, and call yourself a true PC gamer, then using the CFG shouldn't be an issue. Could have been better with more menu options, but not cry-worthy.

Tehcnical aside now...

The game play is tight. The controls are spot on, the variety with ammo types, brings me back to System Shock 2. There is a definite level of polish (albeit id style polish,) to the game. It also has their dark, stylistic, big, and in your face style, in a new (to them) environment. The driving is fun, the exploration is fun, the game is just fun. They expanded on their usual parameters, added extra elements, and while successfully, it's still an id game. Raw, pure, action, now with extra bells and whistles. If you want completely different type of game, you should know better in the first place. id is id. Technical glitches aside, they did everything right with this game if you ask me, while staying true to their style. If you don't like id games, you probably won't like RAGE.

I like id games, and I love RAGE.

It's not revolutionary, but it's evolutionary within its and id's context, looks amazing in motion, and I can't complain about any of the shooting mechanics which is what id does best.

If you come up with a retort you shoudl also provide an example for each or it just makes you sound like a closet troll.

You do make some decent points but so it seems you are more versed than a common troll but from your dismissive attitude and quick-to-remark but just as quickly to provide nothing as a counter argument.

1. For instance what game in this Genre would you say lives up to your expectations? Dying to hear this one.

2. You are a complete ass for even attempting to argue a subjective point as in Artistry and Level design...let me guess you are the definitive standard on that matter, who would have a thought a troll on a niche message board would be the end all be all on the subject. Of course you again don't offer anything up to what you think great level design is not that you would be wrong sinceit's SUBJECTIVE (getting it yet) but it would be interesting to hear.

I can't understand what all the fuss is about. Over the weekend I had a chance to sit down at a PC with RAGE installed (pre-patch) and the performance was great. 768MB GTX 460 and a quad core CPU and the game was installed on an SSD. @ 1080p 4x AA there was virtually zero pop in on the sides of the screen. I had to flip the mouse really quick to see it, basically forcing it to happen (would never play this way). I suppose the only complaint is some of the textures were kinda bad for PC but the performance was very good.

Yes, the game is good.

I agree with most of this. I love ID games and this feels like an ID game. Which is a good thing. Game runs smooth as hell and looks good while doing it. Again, could it have looked better? Sure, but it's still a good time and a nicwe looking game in it's own right as is.

I just started it last night, and like it so far. I did wait until a patch came out, and I have the newest drivers for my 6850. I dont see all the tearing or popups like the first week had. Graphics are good, fire looks great, and the particles floating in the light do too. It is several shades of brown though. I am only in the second mission. I killed all the dudes and returned, bought a few things, and am on my way to the second mission.

Few Q's though. When you crouch, it toggles (I like that). There is no such option for zoom? I cant stand to hold in zoom. Also, there is only a mini map when you are out in the open, not inside a "level" or building? And finally, Im at 1920x1200, but feels a little "off". Is the FOV right, or is there a way to adjust it?

Not so far unless someone's figured out a way to change key bindings or settings like that.

Correct.

And finally, Im at 1920x1200, but feels a little "off". Is the FOV right, or is there a way to adjust it?

http://www.dsogaming.com/editorial/rage-pc-how-to-adjust-some-graphical-settings/

All the tips that are out there so far including how to adjust FOV.

Additionally, if you want to change the FOV you’ll have to add the “+cvaradd g_fov 20″ command to the game’s launch options. By doing this, you are telling the game to run at its default FOV that is increased by 20 degrees. RAGE’s default FOV is 80 so if you add 20, you’ll get a FOV of 100. Feel free to lower that number to find your sweet spot.

I'm running 1920x1200 as well and I wanted FOV 90 so I "added 10" per their instructions.

I beat the game a few days ago. Granted I am not going to base my entire gameplay on PC issues ( I was one of the few lucky ones that had minor issues. The crash issue wasn't a huge issue, because I restarted the game and selected continue campaign.)

The game felt like Doom 3. I did enjoy having multiple weapons at my disposal. The racing wasn't THAT great! But it did break the monotony of FPS. I did enjoy the mash TV. Granted it was the same level over and over again. But I really enjoyed running in and killing mutants over and over again.

The story. Jesus man. I would say it's below average. The final stage was very dissapointing. I was expecting a nice boss fight. I saved all my top tier ammo for some amazing boss fight! But I was wrong! The game just ends abruptly. It felt like the developers said " FUCK THIS! JUST SHIP IT"

Is the game worth $60? No it's a $49 title. Nothing about this game warrants the $60 price tag. While the game did get updated and fixed the loading level crash issue. I wish they would have released something like this at day one.

For people who judge everything on graphics. This is a console port from start to finish. The ony thing unique about this game that I found interesting was the enemy attacking animation and cover animation. This is something that makes Rage stand out on its own. The nice backgrounds also look nice. But it still can't hold a candle to Crysis 1. This game needs a high resolution texture pack for PC and it will probably enhance the game considerably for the PC. For 22GB game I was expecting much more.

Without factoring in PC issues. I rate this game above average with its current state. It's not perfect but it does have some good moments in there. If you guys are trying to make a choice between rage and battlefield 3. I would get battlefield 3 :p Get rage when it's on steam sale.

I'll wait until it's around 30-35. Full price new game budget priority goes to BF3 and Skyrim.

I've only played a little ways into it. There's some technical bugs that need to be addressed, but I'm having fun. I like the environments. Some people, including Kyle, have gone out of their way to trash the game over a few low-resolution textures on non-important game areas or items while completely ignoring the amount of detail that went into the various areas of the game. The Outrigger settlement looks fantastic for one. The combat is excellent. There's a few graphical issues with the texture popping and occasionally the game glitches the world geometry and a level load fixes that. There's nothing that I consider "game destroying" that's stopping me from playing. I think they could have done a better job of patching things up before releasing, but again, is that worth the huge "Do not buy RAGE" plastered on the front page? I don't think so. I was given the game as a gift, but even if I hadn't been I would still buy it.

I like the game and it ran great for me when it first came out. After they released the patch it droped my FPS from a consistent, pegged 50 to and avg of 30-40. It really changed how smooth the game played.

Anyone else have this problem?

Make sure you undo your config changes, make sure your drivers are updated to the Rage performance drivers and delete the AppData/id software/rage folder if you created it. You can redo whatever config changes you might want after but pre-patch settings there do not necessarily translate after the patch.
