So which one is better ignoring price?

And which one is better regarding price?

I plan on doing a moderate level of gaming, but I'm not that big on it to go all out. Thanks.

ATI cards have support for DX9 and the Nvidia cards do not. If you want a very good moderate card, I'd recommend an ATI 9600XT. it shouldn't break the bank if you look around online, and you'll get quite a bit of gaming goodness out of it.

wtf u talking about 9600xt is totally crap in some benchmarks but only in shadeing it rules. FX5900XT has FULL dx9 support!

i'd Recommend The ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb ... Best Bang For The Price ... @ NewEgg For LiL Over 200$ .... an it will last a long time :)

The Nvidia cards do not have DX9 support, and furthermore it costs more than twice what the 9600XT does. So please STFU until you learn something.

correct me if im wrong but direct x 9 requires 24 bit precision and nvidia cards can do either 16 or 32 bit precision. so nvidia cards DO offer full requirements but its set to 16 point by default and is much slower than ati cards at 32 bit
id go with the 9800 pro also

9600XT goes for around $150 at the lowest. 5900XT is about $185. that doesnt seem like more than twice as much to me.
-I would still go for a 9800pro though

First off I am an ATI guy:

But from what I've read the 5700ultra (XT?) will beat the 9600xt in most benchies. That is what I would get right now if company rep wasn't an issue.

Just my $0.02usd

^^ wrong. Even a 5900XT spanks a 9600xt, and, in DX9.
http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/gffx_5900xt(3).shtml

The FX 5900 line does runs DX9, beating the 9600xt, but running slightly slower than ATI's 9800 line. In OpenGL, the FX 5900 line runs faster overall than it's 9800 comparison.

So..... best card without considering $ goes to a FX 5950ultra. And best card with considering $ goes to a $183 FX 5900XT or a $183 5900non-ultra (which many will overclock to a 5900ultra or 5950).

Here's some shopping help:
5900nu $183 shipped

um 5900's have DX9 support. if your only some gaming i cant recomned it since the 9800 pro is better in alot of ways but if you plan on flashing your 5900 its a good deal. all in all get a 9800 pro though

nVidia's FX cards do have DX9 support... Their Ti and earlier, do not.

Some game developers disable parts of it to get faster frames. But they still can do it.

To the poster, the 9800 Pro for a tad over $200 is the best deal.

So one might say they do not have DX9 support. I think djnes is making a pretty bold statement by saying that they do not support DX9, when technicaly they do, but with real poor performance unless cheating is involved. Ex. 16bit precision when 24bit is required by DX9 standards.

Look at this way. You need a vehicle to pull your boat. ATI sells a pickup that can pull your boat at 75mph will all the beer you can drink in the back. nVidia sells a Pinto hatchback that has a ball hitch. In theory, it can hook up to your boat. But it can't pull it faster than 35mph and has no room for your beer. So, would it be right for nVidia to say their Pinto can pull your boat? No.

The good news is that a few months ago you would have gotten flamed, and laughed at, because ATI was the undisputed king. undisputed by the folks who have zero logic or facts to back them up, and undisputed by those who HAD facts and stats tpo back them up. sure for wa while ati set a damm fine HUGE new standard, but dont forget that NVIDIA is one gritty brawler. they fought back and came back and now the choice isn so clear.

My advice: realistically determine what games you play and may be playing in the future. ask your self if how well will your computer support the vid card, and more important do you have a good sound card? a goodnsound card will BOOST your perfromance a good amount.

then let your pocket talk. your asking this question at a good time because your choices are very good.
you may do your reserch on the card your gonna get. see if its ram is rated as good (preferably samsung)

Is sound a issue for you?
the card in my Sig cost me 150.00.its a 9600XT 128mb samsung goodness. I overclocked it to 573core and 350 ddr useing radeon tweeker 3.9 on the Cat4.2

I then used the default overclocking program and was able to get the card up to 605core and 716 ram. I think that any non 1st generation FX's will do you ultra's are better.
