Radeon HD 5970 - REVIEWED @ Anandtech

PCP always come through with the video review. Can't wait until Maxishine gets his hands on one of these.

PC Perspective OC the 5970 to 875GHz and it beat 5870 CF.

The 5970 is the most powerful card in the world!

ATI should have released the 1GHz model.

Anyone have an idea how does Techpowerups get their 5970 to work twice as fast then the other reviews? lol

The author is a regular at XS forums, I might ask him about it there. That's the only vanilla crysis benchmark I've seen though out of the handful I looked at: Guru3d, Anand, Driverheaven. Who know maybe Crysis vanilla actually runs better than Warhead for this card.

edit: actually look at Guru3d Crysis Warhead benchmark its about 10fp difference at HD res and up. They both overclocked their i7's to 3.7ghz and up. http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5970-review-test/16

This might be the answer though --> Techpowerup drivers ATI: Catalyst 9.6
HD 58xx: 8.663.1 Beta 5 (AMD recommended reviewer driver)

---> Guru3d and the other sites : ATI Catalyst 8.663.1 Beta 4 for Hemlock

Release price in the UK are hitting £530 in stock.

Pre orderd a Sapphire 5970 OC for £440 which is expected 27th :)

*edit*

Big speed differenecs in reviews is likely to be down to crossfire bugs either working or not working. When overclocking watch out, some review sites are not voltmodding and only posting standard OCs which most will reach 5870 mem speeds but not core (falls slightly short) Some review sites will volt mod and get way over 5870 core/mem speeds. I've seen 925/1300 a few times now.

I punched that in the google converter and my jaw dropped. Sapphire deal is good then all things considered.

check out Maximum PC they reviewed a PC from Falcon NW with X-fired 5970s and OCed i7 920 @ 3.9Ghz lol overkill much?

Well holy shit, that is a nice card. I'd love to have one. (Then again, I'd be fine with a 5850 compared to my 4850).

So in short you are saying those fps are even possible? sorry i can't agree. Maybe Crysis works better on Ati cards comparing Warhead but not 2x better.BTW i hear first time about someone using 9.6 drivers for 5xxx series is that driver even avilable for download? it should be quite old?

It is a nice card. No doubt.

I'm kind of wondering if AMD gave us 5970 because they didn't have to do anything else...Fermi gets released and AMD drops a 1GHz model on us maybe?

IF the guy is lying or you think he screwed up, go ask him yourself. Or better yet prove him wrong.

I thought AT's review was unnecessarily negative.*

I thought some other reviews were unnecessarily positive too...*

* I'm not in the market for this product... just personally reviewing the reviewers :)

I hate to slag on the guy, but I usually dont like the review as much when somebody from Anand besides Anand does the review. His underlings are not as good as he is imo.

In this case it was Ryan Smith, who is a bit of a weak reviewer imo. He got a few things wrong in his past reviews too so his GPU knowledge is a little weak as well.

Guys i can now report that 9.12 beta drivers resulting in a huge improvement in Crysis ! 30% more performance!! chek it out 5870 owners!

couple of things on anand's review caught me off gaurd.

1) "to convert a miniDP to DP/DL-DVI, you need an active adapter" - http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3679&p=6
you need an active adapter to convert from miniDP to DP, is this true? I thought they were electrically identical

2)"Take note of how much more you can see as well as normal the characters now look. Unfortunately Widescreen Fixer only supports 11 games as of today, and four of them are Call of Duty titles:

Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2142
BioShock
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Darkest of Days Demo
SEGA Rally Revo
Unreal Tournament
Wolfenstein"

i this true, can anyone confirm that ALL of those titles do not support odd aspect ratios by default?

They probably will and still improve the chip itself.

The 1GHz could have been released now but they didn't want to introduce two SKU's. This model would have blown away 5870 CF. 5870x2 would have been an understatement.

We should see one next year special made for Fermi. 5990

this thing was built with eyefinity in mind... looks like a bad ass card.. lil on the loud side at load but whateva..
