Amazon has 2 deals on 6870s: XFX for $216 no rebate and Sapphire for $216 and a $10 rebate.

Nice deals there - think I'd go XFX since rebate is a lot of hassle for only $10 and prefer XFX service. Hmmm....

ppl beware, the new x8xxx line are the old x7xxx lines.

If you have a 4870 or 5870, the equivalent in the new line will be the 69xx series about to be released.

Dead now? It would make me feel better since I just bought a used 5870 for $250 last week. :p

 6870 is about on par with 4870x2 it's also faster than 5850. It's just a little slower than 5870 and quite a bit cheaper, hell you couldn't find a 5850 for this price a little over a month ago.

But you can find a 5870 for around this price AR now, so the 6870 is still a bit overpriced, especially compared to how cheap the 470 has been lately. I own this exact card (the XFX one).

I meant relative to itself, inter-generational, not cross-generation speed-to-cost comparisons

Meaning, the faster inter-generational card is about to be released, and where the 4870 was in its own generation (high end) will be where the 69xx series will be (high end).

The 6870 is the new middle of its line, not the single-core high end the 4870 and 5870 were. and they're playing off of naming to confuse ppl.

He's right about the naming convention being wrong this time, the 4870 and 5870 were the high end single-GPU cards of their day, the 6870 is not comparable for its market. The 6970 will be the 3870/4870/5870 of the 6000 series.

Definitely confused me. Not a whole lot faster (and in some cases slower) than my GTX460 1GB. I can't justify the trade.

5870 is still at least $20 more than 6870 msrp after rebate. I'm not fond of sketchy rebates Thats at least what I've seen for the past week. 6870 still has performance in the ballpark but with lower power consumption. GTX470 appears to have gone back up to the $250 area.

It is bound to drop like a rock around/after xmas due to ATI's releases, the 570 gaining traction in the upper-mid segment, and the price cuts that always appear around this time of year. It won't be above 200 for much longer or it will be phased out at that higher price (possible but unlikely).

I think that a $240 x7xx series would have been far more upsetting to people. The card was a good buy at release and still is at the price. Price dictates a cards marketing segment not name.

Why would any of those cards drop like a rock? By a few dollars maybe but not by much. Since when is $350 the "upper mid segment". I also didn't see any price cuts at this time last year. Prices actually went up IIRC.

What are you talking about, calling the 6870 the 6850 and the 6850 the 6770 would have made far more sense for those used to ATI's naming schemes. Then call the upcoming 6970 the 6870. No fuss. But they made the decision to mislead people for marketing reasons, as you said, because 67xx would have been "upsetting", and indeed, the retail MSRP of 250 does indeed dictate that it is not a true "x870" card, as those have always been priced much higher at release (because they were high end parts).

 I give up

The AMD site still states the 69xx series is suppose to release "week of Dec 13", aka any-day-now. Just fyi. I just didn't want ppl to get suckered by the new naming scheme. I also fear what this might do to resale value of my 4870 :(
