To everyone that adopted early how loud is the OEM fan? I have a 8800GTS (the first one that came out) and it's loud as hell. I just bought an aftermarket cooler for my videocard but I think it's time to upgrade anyways.

Extremely Quiet! It is in my HTPC and perfectly silent in my Antec Fusion from about 8 feet away. Up close it is just a tiny whisper sound, very near silent.

Sweet, thanks a lot guys. I was going to wait for Zalman to make something before I got one I guess not anymore. Another question how hot do these things run? My current card idles at 80C, it's insane!

Also quieter for me - upgraded from a 4830. My 5850 is around 50C idle and hits low-mid 70's gaming in a somewhat poorly ventilated case. It gets closer to 80C if I'm benchmarking, but I haven't done that much.

I cranked up the 5850 fan to 100% just for shits and giggles. Surprisingly, it's a nice wooshing wind sound, not a high pitched whine like and/or hairdryer like. Leaving the fan at stock settings I did a mild overclock (maxing out CCC) and I don't hear the fan at all.

Hope that helps.

How do you adjust the fan on the videocard?

This is a stupid question so I don't want to start a new thread, but what program do I need to overclock my videocard? I haven't done so since I had my Geforce 4 Ti-4200.

I have two in Crossfire, and you can't hear either one. Granted I have not overclocked them yet, so we will see how they do.

Quiet is subjective ... however, I've heard the 5850's stock fan is even quieter than previous generations (4870's, specifically).

I really wish everyone would stop using "use Google" as an answer because half the time now all I get from Google searches is some idiot telling the guy to use Google instead of giving an answer. Thanks

PS: I know you gave an answer. This wasn't directed at you, just in general it doesn't help other people using Google to use that answer.

A really silent vac, right? A whole bunch of real HD5850 owners have already stated how silent it is.

Yes very small shop or home vac. Also this is only this loud when fan is at 100% speed.

This is my RIG which as you can see has tons of fans.

When I added the HD5850 and cranked up the HD5850 fan to 100% somebody in my home asked "What is that noise?". Not making this up. I set the HD5850 to 50% speed for over clocking reasons and the HD5850 is still louder than all my RIG fans.

What a surprise, everyone says its quiet and then sonda comes in and says the complete opposite. OP, take anything he says with a grain of salt (aka ignore it).

I'm listening to it right now at 100% speed and I have a better description of it now.

Sounds more like hair blow drier when the hair blow drier is at low speeds.

I can see the noise caused by the HD5850 fan to irritate many as I have seen video card fans botherd by noisy fans in the past, usually people who have low tolerances to noise. I have a high tolerance to noise and I think I could handle the noise. More than likely I will upgrade the HD5850 stock and fan heat sink to aftermarket mainly for improved cooling fir performance reasons. Seems like afte market cooling solutions are usually quieter as well.

Even though I have high tolerance to noise this fan is still loud.

This is what it looks like it my case with my HD4770.

I don't own a 5850, but my 5870 never goes above 37% fan speed on stock.

The obvious culprit here would be the increased fan speed to deal with the overclock. Expecting a stock fan to remain silent on a OC'd card is kind of unrealistic.

How can you crossfire a HD4770 with a HD5850? They are different series?

I'm trying it out. So far the drivers recognize the GPUs and with MSI After burner 1.3 I can adjust different card settings.

CCC doesn't give the option for Xfire though. I'm seeing if I can figure out a way around the CCC support. If it works I'll report in this thread over here.

I'm running the newest AMD/ATI beta CAT 9.11 drivers.

In the mean time it wouldn't be a smart idea to go out and buy a HD4770 and HD5850 just to do Xfire.

I'm trying this out to work with what I already own. I'm really hoping for some Xfire action in this combo but if it doesn't work out no problem.

Just having fun tweaking.

Right. 100% speed is not what these cards will normally run but for those that like to over clock and push these cards (like me) 100% fan speed is available. It is noisey.
Even 50% fan speed is louder than all the rest of the fans on my RIG.

Just presenting my findings. All I'm lacking is a audio meter to document the sounds to make it more convincing. I'm sure such fan noise reviews will come out later on when aftermarket cooling solutions become available for HD5850.
I'm not going to go into presenting all the data to back up my claims. I have no reason to. Believe me or not the HD5850 fan will get loud when you crank up the speed.

To me the performance of the HD5850 far outweighs how loud the fan is.

I have the Asus 5850 and it is the quietest card I have ever used. I only build silent PC's and I can say with absolute confidence that the card is completely silent. The fan goes at like 1rpm and makes no noise, even when I game. Maybe it is not being stressed enough, but either way I love this card.

Dude 1 RPM is crazy slow. Like the second hand on a dial of a watch!

That's too much of an exaggeration. LoL!!! I'd say it's more like a few hundred RPM... hahaha...

I have had my HD5850 running all day with the fan at 100% and either I have gotten used to the noise or the fan has broken in some.

It seems alot quieter now. Still the loudest fan in my rig though.

Just in case anyone is wondering the RPM the HD5850 spins at when at 100% I used GPU-Z to read temps and fan speed.

As you can see the RPM on the HD5850 goes up over 4500+.

Question about the 5850s HDMI output:
I read that the card itself actually supports 7.1channel audio. So what im curious is if I can just plug my samsung 37" panel in via HDMI and have sound through it. Like even things like music would be great!

anyone used this feature yet?

When i get a chance I will try it out going directly into my HDTV.

I think 7,1 would be optimum for going into a multi HDMI input audio receiver that supports 7.1 channel audio and video to switch different HDMI devices.

I don't have HDMI receiver so I'll see how it works going directly into HDTV.

This is correct. If you right click the speaker icon and look under playback devices in a win64 or win7 environment you'll see options for outputting the audio through the ATI Radeon. If you installed your 5850 drivers properly this option will show up.

Just checked with my RIG.

Had to select ATI HDMI out put as default audio and configure my HDTV speakers for "stereo" audio. I also had to disable my MB realTek audio from default.

I was also able to use my MB's RealTek 8 channel audio as default and configure 5.1 channel with optical output to 5.1 channel receiver and still use the ATI HD5850 for video. Had to select Realtek as default audio to do so.

Running Windows 7 64bit RC.

1680x1050 for some games, 3360x1050 for others. Come xmas, it'll be 5040x1050
