I'm looking at picking up one of these cards and I'm not entirely sure which i should go with. I've been out of the desktop game for a while and need some insight into the differences. The price difference seems negligible, so which will provide the most performance? I've read reviews, and the 4770 seems to be the doll of the moment. It appears though that the 4850 may be a bit more powerful. Your input is appreciated.

haven't seen any competitive pricing for 4770. 4850 still seems like a better buy. I'm told the 4770 OC's decently, but that's not really enough to make it a better buy.

If heat or power are a concern to you the 4770 might be the best choice.

On a performance and price level, the HD 4850 is better.

However, the HD 4770 consumes about half the power of a HD 4850 (both at stock speed); about 55w. For people with weak power supplies, buying the HD 4770 can save them money while only taking a 6% - 8% (on average) performance hit.

from a performance standpoint the 4850. the pricing advantage the 4770 was supposed to have was never had.

Id go for the 4850. The 4770 started out at a nice price but then demand went thru the roof now theyre not only hard to find but $100+ while the 4850 went the opposite direction and can now be had for $100. All the benchmarks Ive seen have the 4850 outperforming the 4770 pretty handily and IMO thats what video cards are all about.

Honestly the 4770 is just simply overpriced right now because of the demand. Either card is fantastic but there is little point is spending the extra for less performance unless you have a dire need for low power/heat/noise.

One of my current HD4770 3dMark06 scores.

This is what a single HD4770 with a decent CPU is capable of doing.

I went from HD4850 Xfire to HD4770 Xfire and I have no regrets.

The HD4770 is better IMO.

Why?

1. It performs better.
2. Xfire performance is better.
3. Uses less power which allows for greater overall system performance and over clocking.
4. It is much more cooler.

HD4770 uses the latest and greatest 40nm GPU technology while HD4850 uses 55nm GPU technology (which is great but not as good IMO.)

I know there are a few people in the world who have scored around 30,000 pts in 3dMark06 with 2 HD4770 in Xfire.

The only down side to the HD4770 vs. HD4850 and HD4870 is current HD4770 pricing. Right now HD4770 technology isn't cheap while HD4850 and HD4870 pricing makes it a good deal for similiar performance.

Bottom line for me is that in my system I have been able to lower my system temps while increasing CPU speed and overall system stability for benchmarks and game play performance that I was unable to reach with my HD4850s.

HD4770>HD4850.

If you can find a 4770, more power to you. It seems that once they get restocked, they are gone...

this. and it oc well. the 4770 is an awesome card for certain people but if your not one of them then the 4850 is the best bang for the buck.

1. It performs better.

Uh, no it doesn't. The 4850 is faster.

HD4770 uses the latest and greatest 40nm GPU technology while HD4850 uses 55nm GPU technology (which is great but not as good IMO.)

All the 40nm process did was reduce power consumed (and therefore heat produced). It doesn't make it faster or anything like that.

I know there are a few people in the world who have scored around 30,000 pts in 3dMark06 with 2 HD4770 in Xfire.

Irrelevant. 3dmark06 scores don't mean shit.

@OP: Unless you are super concerned about power, I'd go with the 4850. It is the faster and cheaper card

Even at stock speeds the HD4770's GPU and GDDR5 are faster. When the HD4770 is over clocked it really flies.

More to it than that. ATI wouldn't be able to double the speed of current HD4000 series if it were not for the 40nm GPU technology. More on this when the 5000 series cards are revealed.

They do to me and thousands of others who use it measure the performance of video cards. It's a benchmark. Plain and simple. It does indeed measure GPU performance.

I wouldn't for the reasons posted but it may work for your needs. If you want overall more performance and potential for even more performance then go HD4770.

Proof of what? Do note that the memory bus of the HD4850 is 256bit whereas the HD4770 is 128bit. While the HD4770 does perform pretty close to the HD4850 as evident in the Hardware Canucks review but the the HD4850 does outperform the HD4770 nonetheless. Since the OP's question was about which card was faster, the HD4850 would fit his needs. Also, the OP did not mention that he would OC the video card so it would be a moot point to mention the HD4770's overclocking capability.

They do to me and thousands of others who use it measure the performance of video cards. It's a benchmark. Plain and simple. It does indeed measure GPU performance.
Where does GPU performance matter? Games right? Problem is, 3DMark is in no way representative of performance in real world games. There have been many situations in the past when a video card would beat out many number of other video cards in 3DMark06 but be beaten by those cards in real world games.

Thousands of "people" dedicated to 3DMark06? They should get something better to do.

4850s are cheaper than the 4770 right now. So what if the 4770 can be overclocked? You compare an overclocked 4770 to a stock 4850, gimme a break.

Cool that you're so into the 4770, but you need to get out of your bubble. Your devotion to the 4770 and persistence that it's better than everything (because it's 40nm, whoopdee) is getting kinda old...

Reason your 3DMark score is so high is because you have a Penryn Quad at 4341 (good job on THAT by the way), not because of your 4770's.

Your posts are misleading. The 4850 is the higher performing card. The poster who intimated that the 4770 is ideal for those who have weak OEM supplies (which are not always easy to replace) and only want to give up 6-7% performance hit the nail on the head.

The only reason the 4770 is $100 is because of people fauning over the 40nm process which don't mean jack shit.

You need to overclock the HD 4770 around 20% to match HD 4850 performance.

Since either card retails for the same price on newegg go for HD 4850. BTW HD 4850s can be overclocked too so...HD 4850 is a clear winner.

Does someone pay you to advertise HD 4770? HD 4770 would've been a great card...if it was like $20 CHEAPER then HD 4850 which it isnt. Its not even really supposed to compete with HD 4850...more like HD 4830 which EOL'ed before 4770 introduction.

BTW If I can get this HIS IceQ4 4850 for $100, 4770 in comparison is an overpriced tech toy.

yeah, it looks like the 4850 is the clear winner. heat and power are a non-issue, because I'm building a new system from scratch and will just address both in the build. i'm not really planning on OCing much, maybe just for fun a little, but it is not a make or break deal. I'm certain that for the most part it will be staying stock so I don't have to worry about replacing it. The games I play aren't super demanding either, as I'm not a huge fan of FPS games. RPGs and strategy games are pretty much my bag.

I like GDDR5 actually :p

Why? So you can have LESS memory bandwidth? The 4770 has 51.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth, the 4850 (despite GDDR3) has 63.6 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

More to it than that. ATI wouldn't be able to double the speed of current HD4000 series if it were not for the 40nm GPU technology. More on this when the 5000 series cards are revealed.

Your reason the 4770 benefits from 40nm is that future cards will be better thanks to 40nm? What the hell kind of logic is that?

They do to me and thousands of others who use it measure the performance of video cards. It's a benchmark. Plain and simple. It does indeed measure GPU performance.

The problem is that it DOESN'T accurately measure GPU performance. 3dmark06 is far to influenced by the CPU *AND* the results don't reflect real world gameplay results (far from it, in fact)

lol

What exactly is the 3DMark benchmark? Ive seen it on all the reviews Ive read but I always paid more attention to the frame rates in actual games (mainly because I didnt know what the heck it was). How is it different than actual game tests?

I don't think that fair. I admit the price is too high from a simple price to performance ratio but the card certainly still has its place. like the 4670, lots of reasons to like it. lower power, quieter card (maybe with third party coolers), not needing a PCI e power cable and so on. I agree with your arguments (if you don't need these properties the 4850 is the better buy) but this card does bring a lot to the table.

Why the hate?

I gave an honest opinion. Again i have extensive experience with the HD4850 and the HD4770 in single card mode and in Xfire.

HD4770 has performed much better in my system. I'm comparing an entire system being over clocked with each card being over clocked as well. In short my system could be considered an "extreme" machine. HD4770>HD4850.

Some of you hate and laugh but the HD4770 is a great card with incredible ability that i have experienced for myself.

I don't get paid a single penny for talking up the HD4770 either. I just appreciate the power of the HD4770 and know from personal experience that it is better than an HD4850. Not just at benchmarks either. It's a GREAT gaming card.

Words from an official [HF] Review:

Who would have thought that we would be here right now telling you that a $105 video card will let you play the latest games with the highest in-game settings? It wasn’t too long ago that a video card around $100 wouldn’t buy you this kind of performance. Now, we are able to actually have very respectable framerates at high resolutions with all the in-game graphics options turned up. The level of performance provided in today’s value video cards is impressive, and they certainly earn their title as being VALUES.

We are also impressed by the level of performance gained via overclocking. This small and light XFX Radeon HD 4770 has some sharp teeth. It had overclocking room, without any modification, to receive large gains in GPU and memory frequency. These frequency gains netted real and tangible gameplay experiences improvement. We were able to run at higher settings in every game after the overclock, in some raising the AA setting and in others raising the playable resolution. We shudder to think what some of you mad scientist-like overclocks can do with this video card!

I consider myself a "Mad Scientist". HD4770>HD4850

For those that appreciate technology the HD4770 will satisfy far more than the HD4850.

Bring me a 655nm gpu that outperforms a 5nm gpu by a good amount, and I'd use it over the slower new tech.

4770 is a trial run of 40nm for the 5000 series. They surely can't test the cards like we the consumers can on such a massive scale, so they're making us their 40nm guinea pigs.

3DMark claims to be a benchmarking tool that measures GPU performance and produces an easily comparable number at the end. In reality, the number doesn't mean jack, and the benchmark sucks at measuring real world performance. In short, just continue to ignore it.

the hate is because you claim the 4770 is better then the 4850, when, as fact shows, it isnt.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Ill just stick to the actual games on the benchmarks. ;)

Obviously that is what you want to believe. The truth that I have discovered from personal experience with the HD4850 and the HD4770 is that the HD4770 is better.

Show me a single HD4850 gpu that can be overclocked to 900mhz with only software voltage tweaking and you will begin to understand how amazing the HD4770 is along with the 40nm GPU that the HD4770 has.

HD4770 GPU can OC to 1GHZ .

HD4770 can do 1GHZ gpu.

It's of no interest to me or anyone else how fast the 4770 looks on paper, I want raw performance, regardless of what it says when I look at GPU-Z.

What the hell kind of cop-out is that? How on earth does "appreciating the technology" going to increase FPS? :p

You're a riot buddy.

Obviously you don't have a clue as to the power of the HD4770.

I did my research and I have actual experience with the HD4770. It is better than HD4850.

Do some research and you will know the truth.

More support for HD4770:

Xitlabreview

from the review:

When it comes to the resolution of 1920x1200, the Radeon HD 4770 beats the Radeon HD 4830 and GeForce 9800 GT, outperforming them by an average 16% and 29%. It also leaves the GeForce GTS 250 behind in most of the tests, except for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin where it is 26% slower. In the other four losses, the Radeon HD 4770 is slower by less than 13%. The average difference between the Radeon HD 4770 and Radeon HD 4850 is only 7%, which can be easily eliminated by means of overclocking. And this is a graphics card with a 128-bit memory bus and fewer ALUs and texture processors! What is especially amazing, the Radeon HD 4770 maintains a playable frame rate in quite many games. That’s very good news since the resolution of 1920x1200 is not a prerogative of 24-inch or larger monitors anymore. The resolution of 1920x1080 is getting popular, too.

Thus, the Radeon HD 4770 is a revolutionary product indeed as it can deliver excellent performance, equal to the previous year’s $200 solutions, for only $100 or even less. Moreover, the new card from ATI is compact, quiet and economical despite the complexity of its GPU, thanks to the 40nm tech process. Additionally, like the rest of the ATI Radeon HD 4000 family, it is endowed with advanced multimedia capabilities including a full-featured hardware HD video decoder and an integrated HDMI audio core.

Right now, Nvidia does not have anything that might compete with the Radeon HD 4700 as it easily beats the GeForce 9800 GT, let alone GeForce 9600 GT, whereas the GeForce GTS 250 belongs to higher price category even in its 512MB version. The release of the Radeon HD 4770 means that the Radeon HD 4850 is going to leave the market: officially priced at $129, it is no faster than the cheaper Radeon HD 4770 whereas the higher-performance Radeon HD 4870 now costs only $149. And this does not seem to be the limit of price reduction.

For the haters please show me some real experience with the HD4770 and the HD4850.

I know a few of the members here have tried both cards and know how powerful the HD4770 is.

Keep on hating if you want but if you use some logic and reason and do some research you will appreciate the HD4770.

I am going to end this once and for all.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=612&card2=566

now please stop making ridiculous remarks about the HD4770 and how wonderful it is.

It beats the HD4770 in both Texture Fill Rate and Memory Bandwidth, both of which are the deciding factors in all modern games, not to mention shader ability.

HD4770 isn't a bad card by any means, and definitely uses less power and runs cooler. But in terms of raw performance, it loses.

Also, 3Dmark benches have always been CPU oriented to their scoring, so having your CPU @ over 4GHz is where your huge score is coming from. However, this does not apply to real world performance. Most reviews no longer use 3Dmark for this, or if they do, it usually just as a reference, but never as a solid point.

^Still don't see the 4770 outperforming the 4850 there :p. Meant for SonDa5 of course.

exactly

Radeon HD 4770 and Radeon HD 4850 is only 7%
Your review said it right there! 4850 is faster... no matter how you want to justify your purchase... it is faster!

Again, the 4850 is faster, and sure you can overclock the 4770 to make up for that, but then why not overclock the 4850 as well, which overclocks great also... lets do apples to apples here, not apples to oranges.

Pharaoh do you do any benchmarks?

If so what kind of scores does your system get you with your HD4850 set up?

From my experience the HD4770 can out perform the HD4850. I don't mind comparing benchmarks with other Xfire HD4850 machines to prove my point.
