Let me try to understand your stance a little better here...

Assume, for a moment, that the XTX is going to be 20% faster than the GTX across the board. Everything it does, it does faster, and the IQ is the same between both cards. Assume that both cards have the exact same price. Feature-wise, the cards are basically identical.

If the GTX uses around 180W, what is the threshold for how much power the XTX can consume before you reconsider your stance? If the XTX draws double, 360W, and uses some obscene number of power connectors, do you still buy the XTX? What about 720W? 540W? 1400 watts?

If you're drawing the line on who is and who isn't [H]ard, perhaps you'll also draw the line on how much power is too much power when we absolutely know that the advantage of the power-sucking card is around 20%.

Well they have a point as do you. Lots of people here are worried only with the fastest profromance they can get up to a point (that point being different for every one, cost, space, heat, power, all can be limiting factors in the end). People go to extremes to get the very last ounce of profromance out of there systems here (Over clocking anything, water cooling, SLI, ect). The spend the time and the MONEY for the best they can get. So for these people, a "60 watt" difference is nothing. Your smart enough to know that here these folks only care about speed for the most part :)

But you also bring up a good point about when do we reach that point where it "cost" too much. In your example is the cost of being a much higher power draw worth the small speed bump? And that is goind to be a different answer for everyone. Some one like you that seems more down to earth would have a much lower tollerance. But for the e-penis kings, then.....


Another point this power useage number are first and foremost from un-verifible sources on un-released parts that as far as I know are still not under and NDA. While it still fun to speculate we all know the the R600 is going to draw more. You can not have more memory clocked at the same speed or faster and not draw more power (assuming the the die power draws are simular wich is probably not the case)....

I put myself in that category. Hence why I also like to water cool.

But as many people pointed out. Complaining about power draw on a TOP TOP TOP end, brand new generation video card is like complaining about the gas mileage on a Bugatti Veyron.

I think the chip itself would be the biggest factor in the total power draw equation, because GDDR4 itself is quite an improvement over GDDR3 in this area. Power draw for GDDR4 chips is actually fairly minimal in the grand equation.

If you only care about speed, wouldn't you suffer through refilling an aluminum tube bolted onto your CPU with liquid nitrogen seventy times a day rather than the relatively easy maintenance of a water cooling system? What about phase change, dielectric oil submersion or large-scale evaporative "bong" coolers? Aren't you making some sort of trade-off with a water cooling system as opposed to more radical, higher performing solutions?

And certainly, I'm not complaining about anything yet. If the card consumes 240 watts, it consumes 240 watts. Even if I end up buying one, I know what I'll be getting into, so I don't think it'd be valid to complain then, either.

Funny thing is, I actually HAVE tried to run a nitrogen PC. Didn't last, too much maintenance. Then again, this was 'back in the day'. We have better methods now.

I don't really think I'm making many sacrifces with my WC. It's the best, feasible solution. My clocks are limited by the hardware mostly, not my temps, which stay nice and icy cool.

But if you want to take your comparison to the ends of the gamut, then how about YOU go hug a tree and use your 5 W wooden graphics card while singing kumbaya and making another shirt out of hemp, and I'll use my 500 W nuclear reactor powered card and go run over some homeless people in my Ferrari.

since the Retail XTX is rumoured to be 9.5" that would put it at 1" SHORTER then the 8800GEE-TEE-EXX
8800GTX 10.5 inches = 26.67 centimeters
X2800XTX 9.5 inches = 24.13 centimeters

8800GTX is longer then the version of the X2800XTX/R600 that consumers will be able to buy for their home built pcs

In any case, this thread has been derailed from a good discussion by adults about upcoming hardware into a middle school playground brawl, thanks to a few posters that desperately want to "win" the thread. The bandwith will make the card PHYSICALLY LONGER (don't ask me how the Canadians did that). Therefore it will not fit in ANY cases. That's right, even if you don't have a case, and just have a mobo on a desk, it won't fit because the air in the room will prevent it from occupying the PCI-E slot. The GTX is obviously far superior cause you can actually fit it inside a room, let alone a case.

Also, I'm sure he'll conclude the bandwith is actually used to drive an oven. Yup, an actual oven. This does two things that will make it much worse than the GTX: It will be super hot, over 1000 degrees at idle. Not only that, but it will also... USE MORE WATTS! Everyone in this thread was right... the R600 will use it's power not to drive performance, but to drive a microsocopic E-Z-Bake oven. It even makes mini-cupcakes. This, of course, makes it much worse than the GTX.

ATI really dropped the ball... it used almost 160gb/s of bandwith to make a telescopic expanding card with an E-Z-Bake oven. In trying to be 'the jack of all trades', it ended up being the master of none... what a shame. Oh yea... and it might also run games really well, but who cares.
