r520 delayed??

fallguy said:
Care to tell me how something can be late, without an official release date?

Too much ignorance in this thread (Zues). Believing the Inq on everything, and assuming what they say its the gospel truth is not a smart thing to do.

AFAIK, the release date is part of what the ATI crew has been hyping all over the board for the past month. They brought a lot of arguments to the table and actually managed to convince everyone that the stuff they made up is true. :D

I doubt any major imporvements can be made in about 3 months, considiering both cards are already being taped out

If the G70 is done they can tweak the drivers, improve manufacturing, let the card manufactures play with em longer, improve clock speeds, laugh at ATI being behind.

Show me a thread/post that gives a release date for R520.....I have a feeling I'll be waiting a while.

What ppl have been saying is months, 'months' and a specific date are totally different things  and the only arguing that has been happening is the NV 'crew' saying 'BS.....It'll never get released.....it'll never have blah blah' etc.

You beleive this to gospel....more fool you. But I have a feeling that if it was an NV card you'd be calling BS......

Then I suppose this is possible for the R520 to, the article said it was delayed not because of tech problems (they stated it was already taped out) but because of marketing

Damn you marketing!!!

Even though I tend to believe this article (makes some sort of sense) I agree with this statement

Not saying that the G70 isn't 'done', but is this card rumoured to be a new core or just a 6800 series on speed?

If it is a new core, why would a company run R&D costs for 2 cores, holding the faster back? Surly they would release the faster to destroy any competition?
The scenario then arises that the G70 is ready for release, but ATi (or whatever company) releases a new line and the G70 (that was made x amount of months ago) is now not as fast as the competitors card and the R&D costs for it have been a waste.....

Doesn't make sense to me

well, consider this... the ATi multi gpu tech is coming out soon, and with that perhaps they can hold off on the release of the r520 because they will have given consumers something to play with for a while.. and once the mvp has been out for a while and is proving to be more and more stable, etc...then they introduce the r520 to the market... just some thoughts...

nah i disagree. The 6800 has been improving quite a bit through drivers. Anyone can compare the cards performance from 10 months ago to now and see massive improvment. So in terms of this being some sort of marketing strategy i think its total bull shit. The 6800U actually shows a strong reason to purchase it over an X800XT unlike its first 6 months out. Either the card will make a early summer release or it wont due to a problem or need for the time. Not just because everythings all swell and they just feel like waiting like the INQ is saying. ATI needs to get a new product out. We all know they've been riding the R300->R480 for a very long time and im personally sick of it. I really want to see a new product and new performance under a different wpc (work per clock). I think its great time for a new card. Even if they didnt release their best models. If people can remember the X800 series actually entered with the X800Pro then the XT and finally the PE. But they need to get something physical out other then a refresh that can compete or exceed with SLI and all of the technolgies nvidia boasts about and more. The lack of doing so simply says they need the time for a reason. As a high end purchaser i simply will not invest $1000 dollars into a dual card setup until ATI has released its SM3.x capable cards. If they try to push dual cards with the current line i very much doubt their sales will even come close to SLI. Lets face it, the only people that pay that much are rich idiots and people who are very in to card technology. Why would i invest 1000 dollars for 2 cards that will be obsolete by the 3rd quarter of this year most definitly? See what im getting at? It makes no sence.

As far as the G70 its suppose to be a revamped NV40 with 280M or so transisters. I wouldnt call it a refresh.

edit-not too sure how many people understand ATI Multi visual processing, but they need to release a new card for each line which will run as a dedicated master card. All current X8xx cards out are desiganted as SLAVE cards. Personally i see it as a waste to invest millions on re-manufacturing the same cards they've been producing for the last 10 months. Their biggest sales period has ended. Now its up to time and price lowering to make them the rest. But having a 4-5 month period of remanufacturing their current line to allow them to run in dual card is a total waste. I say the inq is wrong and the R520 follows up the chipset launch very closly.

From what I have heard they ditched working on the NV50 and went to the G70 which is a newer more advanced core. Right now the 6xxx series is selling very well (look at everyones sig). So they can wait and tweak the G70 until the R520 comes out and keep making money on the 6xxx series until then.

There's no specific thread, but it's always in the undercurrent somewhere. I can't search for specific offtopic posts, but most seem to be based on the xbox being the recipient of a modified R500 core so the verdict was that the R520 must be coming out in a couple of months (Don't ask, i don't understand the logic behind that either). Other than that, it's particularly prominent when the thread starts to lean on insinuations of the R520 being vaporware or heated R520 vs G70/6800 debates. Most common claims are somewhere in late summer or the fall, some even claiming it's around Christmas. References to product cycles or something. Then again, that's the rumor mill for ya :D All those offhanded claims pretty much making it like the release date was somewhere in the 3rd quarter (Refresh was on 2nd quarter, so there were claims of the R520 making a possible 'early' appearance as well)

BTW, been doing the search. All i knew were the summer and fall claims, but when i started looking, found quite a few matches for May in these forums as well. Pretty specific eh? :D

Here's one.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=894178&page=1&highlight=r520+release+date

Say's it's in June. He was shot down, but there are comments like this everywhere, even in other forums. Averall average is around 3rd Quarter. Even tho few says it outright, the general concensus given off by the ATI community is about the same.

Ati still doesnt have a card comparable to NVs 6600gt i mean it feels like NV is in control of the mainstream and low end market..

Ahhh... so they _will_ have to remanufacture the cards to add the MVP compatibility... right, the whole "dongle" and "master card" thing... man, it's going to cost them a ton to do this... they had better pull a rabbit out of their hat when they pull whatever it is they are going to. :)

They should just forget about the high end for a while...Nvidia is back in the driver seat...they'd make a lot more money if they just focused on budget stuff for a while...

9800XT?? Don't throw PS3.0 at me as the 6600gt won't run PS3.0 games for jack. It cried for me to stop when I tried running Riddick at PS2.0++.....

Marketing man, marketing...

Who knows if it would be faster?

At least now we'll see how AMR fares.

Sure- someday- a year after nVidias SLI.

Ouch Hate_Bot- how are those
Wait till June for a (woot) R520
and
Don't buy SLI- AMR sounds better and will be here in June!
recommendations tasting? ;)

I am sure its what you would say if it were the G70 we were talking about.
Any ways Ido find it rather odd that when the Inq says things of a negative auroa about the R520 most everyone regards it with complete faith. They always put this back door in their posts though/
"It is the Inq but they have been on the spot lately"
or
"It is the Inq they have had some good info some times".
Meh... Hog wash.

Yes, you can hardly find bigger crap than SLI. :p

Would you care to have a benching contest? Any 10 benchmarks, game or synthetic, you get to pick. Then maybe we'll see who's setup is really "crap"

ver good thank you, just change the "June" to a "september"

Not everyone blindly fallows a company rollo ;) , some like to wait and see what both competitors have, before making a decision,

But we all know you, youll be first in line for a G70... without even bothering to look at the R520...

edit: Also, how do you know this sint BS? You seem to say (in any thread concerning the R520 with an Inq article) that this is all "Vaporware" and "Rumors" and how "Ill believe it when I see it", yet when something kind of bad is posted about it, or something good is posted about a G70, it's "Fact" and theres no point in even debating it...

hmmm.....

nope, it makes nothing faster. The good thing is you benefit from the added visuals but you see no performance loss, that is a good thing you know? You dont gain anything speed wise but you get more eye candy and you dont lose anything from it at all. What you just posted is not what i was refering too, keep looking. By the way its a ram compression technology, the VPU is still going to do the same work with or without it, point is with it, the vpu does the same amount of work for a nicer picture. Get it yet?

actually, the exact opposite is true

3Dc provides a performance increase, (and smaller memory footprint) and with that a game content developer can choose to pack in higher resolution normals for example increasing the image quality, basically offsetting the performance benefit with higher visuals

so you get a nicer looking image with no loss to performance in the end, correct? Its essentially packing a more detailed image in the same space, thats what i get from it.

PRIME1 said:
Well if what the Inq says is true, that the G70 is done and the R520 is delayed.....ATI could be in some deep doo doo.

On another note, NVIDIA already supports 3Dc. It was included in a recent forceware release.

unfortunately it just runs in software, so the benefit of using it might be nullified by the fact it's not hardware accelerated

but that's unproven, just theoretically speaking

it's good it's being adopted by both companies and kudos to ATI for making it open, i hear it will be the default normal compression technique that will be part of DX10

only if the game content developer chooses to implement higher image quality

they could opt to stick with the memory and performance savings

The SM 2.0++ mode in Riddick does not utilize Shader Model 3.0 in any form. What it adds is Soft Shadows, and that is what kills the performance.

Riddick only has "Shader Model 2.0" level code.

BTW, the game is OpenGL.

I have said all along, and you know it, that we won't likely see R520s till this fall. Search my name and R520, and you'll see this is true.

I also don't think nVs next card will be out till late this year.

What I'm disagreeing with, and always have consistently, these ridiculous claims you/others have been making "Don't buy SLI now or you'll feel bad in June when you can buy more power for less money".

I said you were dreaming then, I'm saying "I told you so" now.

Anyone who buys a couple 6800GTs now is getting what will likely be close to R520 performance today for ~$700. Not a bad trade for waiting till what Sept.? Oct? Nov?

While some of his posts may be considered questionable, if you find any fault to the above logic you need to have your head examined. The $1k for 2 Ultras is worth it to me, because I've had it since feburary, and you guys are still waiting. When the r520 is out are you gonna say wait till the r9090970roxorsmysoxors is out?

The card in Hate_Bot's sig says it all IMHO.

An official launch date of ATI's next card was never announced from ATI.

They never announce official dates ahead of time. They only leak the information to investors and such which trickles down through sites like the Inq. And it's the same situation with just about every story at the Inq...they write articles for one reason only...to get page hits...half of everything they say is blown out of proportion or just plain made up in order to have something to say...

How so?

I only recently (ever since I joined the forum) gotten into the whol Computer thing. I knew for one hell of a long time, that my card was slow, but I never really needed to upgrade (I was running CS:1.6 just fine), only recently have I gotten into the whole thing.

Also, I love it when Brent comes into these posts, and stops alot of the mis-truths and Nvidia !!!!!!ism thats in these threads...

what does IMHO means? sorry for the nob question..but it's bugging me since everyone is saying it, not only in this thread :)

o nvm, i did a fast google and it means in my humble opinion hehe

Whenever I see one of those threads gettin started, first think that pops in mind is The Inq. Second thing is that it will probably take 20 pages for this thing to die out.

Seriously. People. Stop this. This video card forum can honestly be turned to a day time soap opera.

Nothing has been officially announced and nothing will be officially announced until a website has a card or until an ATi rep says something.

ATi said that they will not announce a release date because they don't wanna get everyone's hopes up and then start bashing them.

Let's all calm the fuck down and work on fixing people's video cards and stop talking about the future. This should all be in General Mayhem. So subscribe, pay $5, and you can say whatever the fuck you want !! :D

if you dont like it.. simpy dont open the tab and read it.

i for one like to discuss possible delays and the causes.

I run Riddick with soft shadows at 12X10 0X0X very well with 6800GT SLI, for me the choice is soft shadows vs. AA/AF.
