I'm so saddened right now. My 5870's fan just bit the dust. I was playing a game and I noticed the temperatures on my OSD were too high. Exited out of the game and brought up Afterburner and saw that the fan was spinning only half the RPMs it should be. Took it out and found that the bearing was seizing up on me. I will admit that it's probably my fault, as I haven't been keeping up with the cleaning of my hardware and there was a good bit of dust.

Luckily I had my old 4890 so I can still game a little until my new 6970 arrives, hopefully Saturday. It's kind of a blessing, as I've been looking for a reason to upgrade and now I have it.

Just wandering out loud, has anyone else ever had this problem? It's the first time it's ever happened to me. Luckily it's just the fan that's bad, so I'll end up getting another cooler and use the 5870 in my secondary build.

never had it happen on any ATi card that I bought however mine have all been reference designs

This was a reference design, one from the initial batches of 5870s that were released. I can't complain, it's been strong for over a year and a half while heavily overclocked and having the fan spin damn near the max to keep it cool enough.

The fan on my Ref. 5870 sounded like a bearing was loose but it was making the Grrring noise of doom so - I picked up a Twin Turbo Pro and slapped that sucker on and my 5870 is quiettttttttttt now!

I think I had this all settled just 3-4 days ago. Found a TTP cheap @ mwave and found out they are in the OC region - so I went and picked it up in person. Probably best thing I've done to my rig besides also installing my twin Gentle Typhoons @ the same time for my h50.

Does it use the same fan as the 4870? if so swap them..

The 5870 and 4890 have different cooling solutions, including the fan itself. I already have someone who put an aftermarket cooler on his 5870 sending me the original so it'll be back up in action within the week. I, like all addicts, use any excuse I could to feed my habit(upgrading) and spend some of the tax money I got back this year.
