I need recommendations on getting a processor that has fairly low power consumption and heat. This is for a file server so it needs to have at least 800 bus speed. Beyond that though I need to figure out if the intel is the better (or amd?) for this. And which speed of either would be best?
 
Either Intel or AMD, doesn't matter. Nor does speed really for a file server since the bottleneck is I/O bound.

I have a PIII 650 that runs my file server, it doesnt slow down transfers at all.
 
For a true server, you need a good multitasking processor with HT or a dual CPU setup. AMD just doesn't cut it for multitasking at ALL. However, with that said, if you are just looking to set up shares, I have a Celeron server which is doing the job fine just for that alone. Don't put it under any type of serious load, though, or it will puke. I'm currently negotiating a deal to pick up a new server with HT for trades, but we'll see how that goes.
 
P4 3.0C if you're going Intel.

maybe even 3.2C if you can find one.
 
Well if FSB is that important to you a Celeron may not cut it, although depending on what you intend to do with a server a Celeron could probably do fine. However, seeing as how you've set some boundaries I would agree with the previous statement made by FanZ. Intel's Hyper-Threading will be excellent for a single-core box and will do you a lot of good in a server as opposed to other solutions. This all depends on what it will do though as well.

The CPU makes no difference for this, especially the FSB. :roll: You can run a file server on a 300 MHz machine or older and odds are, it runs great. Also, you by no means need a machine with HT or 2 CPUs to share FILES. Any AMD or Intel CPU would do the job fine, HT or not. Please read up on servers before you make unsubstantiated statements like that.

For simple file serving yes. For some types of server applications the CPU can be important. True that FSB and HT aren't terribly important for file transfers.

If you want relatively low power consumption and heat, the Pentium 4 Northwoods are the only real choice. Prescott's all run hot and consume massive amounts of power.

An Athlon 64 would be an excellent choice with those requirements. Just make sure you get a good motherboard from a reputable manufacturer and don't cut corners in quality.
