I am building a computer for someone who is really ready for the upcoming sims 3. They already have a monitor that runs 1900x1200 and a gtx 260 (all the other components are old and bottlenecking it). We live in dorms so upgrading to a bigger monitor isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Should we do another 260 for sli? 4870 or what? Any help would be awesome.

Is the sims 3 that much of a graphic intensive game? Shouldnt a 260 be able to handle it pretty easily at that resolution?

It's not out yet, but by the looks of the videos on the site and everything else, it looks really nice.

Same as mine, Silverstone ST70F. It's a nice little psu.
Not enough amperage/wattage for GTX 260 SLI.

But generally, don't bother adding a GTX 260 just yet. Wait for the game to come out, play the actual game and see if a single GTX 260 card is enough. For all we know, Sims 3 could be one of those games that do NOT scale at all from multiple GPUs.

In fact, traditionally, the Sims games have been very CPU and RAM heavy.

How so? I have seen a friend who is using the same psu with 260s in SLI. He was using a 6400 X2, one hdd, optical, cathodes, and he has been running fine.

Maybe has to do with your PSU 12v @ 18a and the gtx260's asking for 32a across the 12v, I think.
Do not trust me though, I do not know that much about the subject.

I'm assuming that you're speccing out an quad-core setup with GTX 260 SLI, correct?

Well according to the Corsair PSU finder, which is pretty accurate, for standard non-OC'd C2Q with one drive and GTX 260 SLI, a PSU with at least 60A on the +12V rail is recommended. The ST70F only has 50A on the +12V rail.

Just because your friend's system is running fine now doesn't mean that problems won't develop later on.

Thanks for the info, mate.

Aside from just the sims. If he goes on to play other games that are a bit more graphically intensive, what would you recommend as a single card, since we already have the st70f already ordered? 275, 285? Any on the ATi line? Any of these seem fine, the real factor (i guess) would be how much is willing to be spent for a card.

It also really depends on how much high settings he wants as well as price. But from a bang for the buck standpoint at 1920x1200:
GTX 260
HD 4890
