I just bought the E4400 processor, I am going to OC. I was wondering to I need that paste to put on the processor before I put the HSF on there? It didn't come with any, so should I go out and buy some?
 
The stock heatsink has a thermal "paste" stuck to it, its ok and good for minor OCing to around 2.8GHz. If you are going to get serious and go for higher I would recommend a third party heatsink which should come with some thermal paste that is somewhat better. Oh I see, maybe your 3rd party heatsink did not come with paste, odd, well anyway, yes you MUST have some kind of thermal paste.

Replacing what is on the stock heatsink with something like Artic Silver 5 would be a good idea.

The stuff lasts a long time and does not go bad if stored properly (cool place) and it never hurts to have a tube around.

So in short, yes, if you can find good paste you need some. Careful of the hype, AS5 is regarded as very good, MX-1 good, a few others but a lot of them say "silver" and are just silver colored and do not really contain silver. So know what you are buying or you can end up spending money on something not as good as the stock thermal material.
 
Ok thanks, yea I'm just using the stock HSF, so aslong as I don't go past around 2.8 everything will be fine (stock HSF+paste). I didn't realize it came with it pre-on =P
