I'm working on upgrading someones computer at work. She currently has a Pentium D 3.06 (Dual Core) should I swap it out with a C2D 2.33 ghz or are they are pretty much comparable do to the P4 having a higher clock?

Thanx,
Jason

2.33Ghz C2D will stomp all over a Pentium D. Any Pentium D.

You sure the board will take the C2D? If it will, yes, make the swap. Should be a night and day difference.

thanx for the quick response.

hmm its a Dell Optiplex 745

we have some opty 755 at work with c2d's in them. it should work, but i would update to the latest bios before changing the cpu.

Make sure the board will support the power requirements, pin out, and bios support for a Core2 D or Q chip.

If it'll take a Pentium D power requirements for a C2D are comparatively zero. Fairly sure most Pentium Ds were LGA775. Only real concern is BIOS support, and someone else already said latest BIOS should handle it fine..

According to the Dell tech specs, yes, the Optiplex 745 will accept any E6000 series C2D.

I had an Intel® Core™ 2 Duo e6400 and it beat the socks off from the fastest Intel Pentium D that we ever released. If the board supports it then go for it. BTW most of those boards will only support the 65nn processors so don't try to use a 45nm processor on it.

somehow this seems amusing coming from the intel guy.

Meh, Pentium D 805 was not too terrible, considering its overclocking performance.
Its just that the TDP killed it...
