Just got one, for best results, and keeping the Dremel in good condition, when cutting, is it better to go with or against the rotation?

eg. Dremel turns clock wise, do I move to the left or right?

Yeah, I've found that it can. :p (The dremel relation, that is)

So, one way, rather than the other won't put more strain on the dremel? and cutting disks?

Ya anyway is fine. Just don't force the cut. Take your time and use gentle pressure. A lot of people make the mistake of forcing the disc to cut into the case... and they wonder why they go through so many discs because one they either break or two they put too much pressure and wear out the disc before it's time.

The key here is that cutoff wheels are grinders not cutters. This means it doesn't matter. If you were using a saw style bit then it would matter but you should be able to figure that out since they only cut well one way. :)

It really doesn't matter at all which way you cut. The only suggestion I have is that you cut so that the wheel is going into the top of the piece to be cut instead of tearing upward from the bottom. It's not that it makes any difference in how well it cuts (actually grinds) but it'll cut down on the number of sparks flying into your face.

$500 of medical bills later and permanent eye damage has taught me to wear REALLY good safety glasses when Dremeling anything. That being said I know we're all too manly, immortal, impervious to pain and injury, etc to actually wear glasses. Since you know you won't be wearing appropriate eye protection (c'mon, you know you wont) try to minimize the risk at least.

.. anyone grinding metal without eye protection is just plain stupid.

I'd agree... but when I ended up at the emergency room one night after several pieces of red hot metal had managed to burn into my cornea I was wearing eye protection. In fact it wasn't even Bob Villa safety glasses (you know, the ones that look like 1950's regular glasses) - these were lab goggles. Fit over my face like a ski mask. But there were still little vent hole which sparks managed to find and...

All I'm saying is there's no way to be 100% and it's always best to minimize the risk as much as possible.

Safety glasses aren't going to make your eyes impervious to harm, they just improve your odds of not being blinded the same as wearing your seatbelt or a motorcycle helmet doesn't guarantee you're going to live through an accident, they just improve the odds you will.

Thanks guys. ^_^

I've got safety glasses and a mask. You're totally right about them not making you invincible, and I know that, so yeah, minimize the risk ^^.

I've got a mod planned, I'm just practising now. :p And I've got to get a case to work with. But as soon as I've got things sorted, I'll post the worklog.

BEEN THERE!!!

Haha I got two little rust spots in my eye from cutting with the cutoff wheel without safety glasses. They had to burr out the rust spots on my eyeball, so what did they whip out?!?!?! A TINY DREMEL!!!!

Ahkk, that wasn't fun.... but you can bet the percocet they gave to me afterwards was!!!

Yeah... I remember asking the doctor what the hell he was planning on doing with a dental drill. The disturbing part was when he touched my eye with the bit it made it quiver and I couldn't stay focused on the spot in the ceiling he told me to watch. Made me get sick to my stomach.

They didn't give me percoset but I got a really stylish eye patch.

I thought the coolest part was the yellow UV reactive dye they dropped into my eye. After I got out of the hospital I went to a club that had UV lights on the dancefloor. I got so many numbers from women that night. I wonder if I can buy that stuff.
