Questions about some BIOS settings...

some of the voltage options that I have I dont really understand. I was wondering if someone can help me out...

First is FSB overvoltage control - what does that actually do? What does it send more volts to? What will it help me with if I increase it? I mean, wouldn't sending more volts to the processor help me with fsb?

Next is (G)MCH overvoltage control - No clue about this one either. Same questions above apply.

Also, If I am overclocking JUST my processor and not the video card, why do some tutorials tell me to put the PCIE bus speed at 100mhz? Is that really necessary? Why? They also tell me to increase the voltage of the PCIE bus...

All I want to do is OC my processor to 8x400=3200 and I want to do it with the lowest volts possible. Guess the question is, where do I need to increase the volts? Back in the day it was just ddr and cpu, now its all confusing.
 
I'm not the best person to be giving advice about this but i'll help as much as i can. Often, when overclocking it's better to lock the PCI-e frequency, if not it can cause lots of problems (all i know, i'm afraid). A lot of people add 0.1v to MCH, supplying more power to the northbridge.
 
You probally will not need to increase the voltage to anything but the ram and the cpu and I like your caution to use as little volts as possible.

I am assuming you have disabled the standard bios settings that would interfere with overclocking.


Look up your ram and see what its rated voltage is. Set dram voltage in the bios to the same thing.

leave everything else at defaults.

With the system you have you should be able to boot at 300 x 8 2.4GHz with out even breaking a sweat. Run a pass of memtest. Check your temps.

try 350 x 8

try 400 x 8

if you fail to boot, (switch off the power supply at the back of the pc and let it sit for a minute, switch on the power supply and press the front panel button, I should recover from an overclock and reset FSB to defaults, check the PCI frequency is still at 100, set it maunally, dont rely on Auto) set the Vcore voltage (cpu voltage) to 1.375 volts and check all your bios setting to make sure they are correct, and retry, It probally will boot. IF not try 1.4 V (we still are under the chips max rating of 1.5, no worries, but watch temps. )

Now at 400 x 8 run memtest at least one full pass, boot into OS and run TAT or coretemp both at dle and at least an hour at load, (use Orthos) if eveything is OK, you now start backing off on Vcore/cpu voltage by rebooting, reducing it, run the above tests until the machine will not stay stable. Then add back the last adjustment on Vcore, retest. and there you go.

Those other voltages are typically needed for extream overclocking and some doubt exists as to if they help or hurt, just depends. So Ignore them till you find out what she will do with raised cpu voltage and memory voltatge set to specification. (Board memory voltage default is 1.8V you memory probally requires higher, look it up)

once you get it stable at 4 x 800 start a log book, write down all changed bios settings, voltages, memory timing settings, temps under load and idle. A small pocket notebook kept in the bottom of the case or on top of the power suppy (if no vents there) is very handy if you, and you will, decide to see how high you can go.

oh and the Northbridge of that board gets real hot, so you will need good airflow or glue a fan on it. Lots of posts on that, search will bring em up. DS3 Northbridge

So lets see where she will go without all the fancy stuff, then repost and you can start messing with the strange settings. \

As of right now, the clock it at 8x400 and no hickups. The voltage is default all across except the CPU which is at 1.35. Right now I am surfing, listening to music, writting a paper and... ahem... using another program that is memory demanding... and my temps are hovering around 47C.

SWEET ! good temp, and yep on the PCI buss, some early boards had some question as to what was going on with PCI set to auto and it was found that manually putting them on the 100MHz default ( or 102)helped so that has become kinda a standard thing to avoid any question of what was happening.

Frankly that sounds rock solid and good, you could maybe get some more out of it but I doubt you could tell the difference in use. Unless you are a hard core gamer, I would not mess with it much, you wont really gain much. It seems happy and thats a hello of a nice OC at really good temps which should keep things nice and reliable without worrying about crashes or component lifetimes.

thats man :) yeah I think I'll go ahead and keep it at 8x400. I dont really want to risk stability because i am indeed a hardcore gamer. Thanks for the help!
