ok so my families Dell Dimension has a Pentium D 2.8GHz which is a 775 socket

Can i buy a e6750 and then buy the Penryn when it comes out and put the e6750 into my families dell, i don't know much about processors and motherboards but im just making sure it will work.
 
Well see if there's updated Dell BIOs that let you use that E6750.
 
It depends on the motherboard.

Tell us what model it is and maybe we can let you know.
 
You might be able to use the conroe, pretty good chance with or without a Bios update, but you wont be able to use the penryn. As its been stated that only the latest 3 series intel chipsets will support those in the future.
 
You can run CPUZ to find out the chipset info... that will give you an idea. If its a 945, 965, or 975, the Conroe may work. You'll still probably need a BIOS update, though.
 
w/e im not going to do anything with that pc, but do you think i should buy a q6600 for my new build or should i wait for the penryn
 
I would wait until Penryn unless you're really in need of a new PC. At the very least, the Conroe C2Ds will probably drop in price, so you'll be able to either get a Penryn chip or a dirt-cheap Conroe/Woodcrest.

run CPU-Z and see what the chipset is. we cant tell you unless you tell us the chipset.

Hopefully... but with the release of newer Conroes in the past, the trend has been to offer better parts for the same amount of money, rather than dropping prices on the older models (eg. E6400 price stayed the same while the E6420 was intro'd at the same pricepoint).

But yes, hopefully, we'll see some price drops. At the very least, you'll get more for your money. But according to current rumored pricing, it seems that now is still not a bad time to build, since the replacement for the Q6600 is the Q9300, which is just a 2.3Ghz 1333FSB 6MB CPU. Not far off from the Q6600, but still slightly better at stock speeds -- only drawback would be the 7x multiplier.

its a decnet processor but i havent gotten the chance to see its gaming performance cuz it doesnt have a graphics card.
 
well what if i installed vista and an 8800 in that bad boy will it run decently on low settings cod4
 
Nope, only 945 and up support the Core 2s. The best you can do with that mobo is upgrade it to a fast 9-series Pentium D.

maybe... what size monitor does it use? and yes, you'll most likely need a new PSU. Check to make sure that the one used in the Dell isn't proprietary.
