Current System:

I just ran Speccy, its a program that just give you a printout of all your hardware.

CPU:
Intel® Pentium® Processor E5200
(2M Cache, 2.50 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

MOTHERBOARD:
Gigabyte EP45-UD3L

RAM:
G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15

I could afford a new computer, but I just spent about $800 dollars on a steering setup so I don't want to go totally crazy for awhile. So I'm thinking of skipping a total upgrade to a i7 CPU/RAM/MOBO. I think I will be patient for now and stay in the LGA775 socket CPU since I think it should be good enough for me for the next little bit.

Obviously I haven't even come close to put the best possible LGA775 CPU in this box, so if I'm able to find the following cpu:

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9550
(12M Cache, 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

then double my RAM and buy the same kit to give me 8GB of RAM. So basically my question is does the price of the CPU/RAM give me a lot more horsepower than what I have now? I'm guessing the CPU/RAM would cost me around $210. I run iRacing (found out it won't help me in that too much), Bad Company 2 and other PC driving games.

I want to keep my video card for now, I don't game at the highest resolution. I run at 1680x1050. My pc LCD can't do a higher resolution than that. I'm sure if I connect it up to my 42 inch Sharp LCD it'll still run fine.

Going above 4GB of RAM for your use is pointless (assume you are running Win 7 64bit).

Save your money on a quad 775 and focus on maximizing what you currently have.
You should be able to overclock the E5200 on that Gigabyte board to an easy 3.0 GHz with stock cooling. With a better cooler and good case airflow, 3.6 is possible.

Spend nothing, gain everything. If you must spend, pick up a 6850 as that is a good match for the E5200 (OCed).

Save for future system.
 
Really depends on how cheap you can get that Q9550 for. If you can get it for $150, it'll be a good buy. If more than $160, that's a bit of waste of money.

However what PSU do you have? The Q9550 does use more power than the E5200.

Which 500W PSU?

That's what we need to know from the OP. There are a lot of "500W" PSUs that are either really crappy or shitty (as in they can't deliver anywhere near their full rating without going out of spec) or are just too old to power anything that's reasonably modern.
 
Antec 500w. Nothing crazy

There have been many different Antec-branded 500W PSUs in existence over the years. Some are pretty good, some are not so good. We need the exact model of that PSU and the exact line in order to make the determination.
 
My apologies, earth watts. I'd have to buy a new power supply down the road anyway, so if I need to buy one it would work for this system, and power one in the future.

That Earthwatts 500W should be fine for such an upgrade
 
If you live near a Microcenter it might be possible to do an upgrade for not much more than you're looking at spending now. The $150 Core i5-2400 (or $180 i5-2500k) and the CPU/motherboard combo deals they run from time to time are very reasonable. If you were to get a Core i5-2400, you could get an H67 motherboard for under $100, and then get a $40 stick of RAM for 4GB, leaving the second slot open for 2nd stick of RAM when your budget allows.

$150 - Core i5-2400 (Microcenter, add sales tax)
$88 (before $10 MIR) - MSI H67MA-E35 (This is just an example, depending on your needs you may want to spend more or less than this.)
$39 - G.SKILL Value Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
Total (before taxes): $277

So for $70 more than you were originally looking at, you get the latest generation processor. Note the 2400 cannot be overclocked. You'd need so spend a bit more on the motherboard and get a 2500k if you wanted to be able to do that, but I would take a Core i5-2400 over an OCed 9550 any day.

Even if there isn't a Microcenter nearby, you can get the following CPU+motherboard combo for about $20 more:
$260 - Core i5-2400 and MSI H67MA-E35

But yeah, for under $300 you can get Sandy Bridge quad core. I know that's 50% more than you were looking to spend, but it's an option. You can do it for less by getting an H61 board (you'd be around $250 total if you can get the CPU from Microcenter.)
