Question about Bios Flashing...

Hello, I am one of the few (or many?) around here that own a 6800 GTO, I am able to unlock to 16/6 flawlessly, although the reports seem to be that after mid-october dell/nvidia started to prevent unlocking and I bought my system in late october (shipped the 25th) so thank goodness for that. I am also able to get an OC of about 435/1100 stable with no artifacts, so my question is...Can I flash this to a 6800 GT PCI-E? I have the 6800 GT PCI-E Bios Rev 1, and seeing as it doesn't seem that my card cannot surpass/be unlocked to a stock Ultra let alone a GT, I'd like to know. I tried to test using the vgabios tool and my system reboots but I'm not sure if it works/supports the 6800 series, so I'm unaware of whether the problem is the tool or if the card will become fubar'd by flashing. Anyway, sorry for rambling on, any help will be greatly appreciated and welcome. Thanks in advance for any advice/comments :) .

*EDIT* So I realized I needed to use VGABIOS in DOS, doh. So I loaded up DrDOS and I tested the PCI-E GT bios, the screen refreshed, and it said it had loaded succesfully...I am not familar with this proggy, does this mean it was successful? Is the bios only loaded into memory while in DOS, or is it suppose to carry into windows (I doubt that)?

*EDIT 2* Ok, I really have to stop editing but I have just tried to load a completely incorrect bios, it wasn't even for the same series of GPU, and it gave me garbled madness followed by the screen shutting off. So I will continue my test with a non pci-e GT bios and see if I get the same result. So far it looks as if I just may be able to do this flash...could just be foolish optimism though :eek: - - Alright, a non pci-e bios also loads without a hitch. I know if I were to flash I'd have to use the pci-e version, but I was just curious as to whether anyone finds this suspicious? Thanks.
 
Alright, I have succesfully flashed my GTO to a 6800 GT, the pipelines and vertex shader are still disabled by default, but other than that everthing seems to be running at GT specs :)...So off to play some games I go.
 
*Update* Successfully Flashed to a 6800 Ultra PCI-E, the first flash was not very efficient and gave poor overclocks, went to 385/1060 from 430/1120, I suppose this is because on further inspection I noticed the 6800 GT PCI-E was stamped with an NV40 p207, when the board is actually an NV45 p211. I'm running stable at stock Ultra speeds, I'm seeing a 5-6 degree increase in temps, the GTO was already a hot card, so I think I may need to order up an NV Silencer 5. Anyone who has a GTO can also try these flashes, but I suggest the ultra if you are going to attempt it. I've had excellent results but your's may vary, tread wisely :).

The problem is that the Ultra BIOS uses 1.4volts... (that why the higher temps = lower overclocks)
Use this program to edit your the ultra BIOS to 1.3v and to whatever clock speeds you want.... (and that you know are 100% stable)

First set it to 1.3v and test for overclocking potential stability. Then edit your BIOS again to 1.3v and the speed you want to set.

I did it and set my GT to 380/1080 (from 350/1000).... it was stable at 400/1100, but to be safe I went a little lower just in case some new game taxes the card harder than Doom3, FarCry or 3dmark.
 
Hi, thanks for the advice, unfortunately OE 1.5 wont properly read the PCI-E bios'...So I guess I'll have to wait for an update. Right now it's pretty hot at 63 GPU, and 46 Ambient. I may flash back to the GTO for now. Oh and BTW I *can* now get close to the same 430/1120 I had as a GTO with the Ultra bios.
 
by the way *bump*, and i installed the NV5 Silencer, so i can clock to 430/1100 , but nothin more than that, hehe i think u might of been over exagurating those frequencys with the 435, cuz when i ran anything more than 400 on stock while running fully loaded graphics i reached temps up to 90-95 celsius, and at 425 stock i would get artifacts, but with my nv5 i'm reaching max temps of 70-75 now with 430/1100 with no artifcat,s and 5400 average 3d2005 scores :)
 
oh and i want to know the purpose of flashing, does it give better clocks or something? i jus twant to know the advantage

Yes you can flash the Dell OEM 6800 GTO, as for performance it's not really increased so much that I would recommend this to everyone, basically all this does is set your "stock" speeds to those of an ultra/GT I suppose -- as for the exaggerating, I wasn't. I am able to run 435/1100 (With the GTO bios) stable with stock cooling and at max load I have never reached the temperatures you speak of, the highest temp I observed ever was about 80 degrees. (With games such as FarCry, Doom3, and Half-life 2 btw)
 
80 wow, cuz everyone else i've seen in hardforum about 11 people with a GTO posted the same temps as me, wierd how u have a load of only 80
