Victory Accomplished. I've never actually beaten any of the Quakes prior to today, so I finally got around to playing the first one through. Anyone else revisited any oldies but goodies lately? I know I'm planning on moving to Quake 2 and the Thief series after this.

Id's best game by far IMO. I'd really like to see a proper sequel to the original Quake, but I don't trust Tim Willits to not fuck it up.

Lol only 10fps?

I loved the shit out if quake. That was my first serious multilayer experience. Nothing beats grappling above a door and waiting for some sap to walk through before nailing the crap out pf him.

Indeed it is. I played the Dooms and Quakes as a kid, but never beat anything except for Doom 3 when I got it on my first gaming pc back in 2004. I picked up the id superpack on Steam a christmas or two ago, so there's indeed quite the backlog.

Also, lol at the 10 fps. It's been running a steady 60 fps under vsync, so that must have been from taking the screenshot too soon after leaving the main menu.

LOL.. have you tried quake 1 with darkplaces with the ultra like 1gb textures? I know onmy q8200 with 512mb 4850at 1920x1200 i had places where framerate would drop right to 16fps. but wow.. did it look awesome.

Yeah, ill probably be playing quake 1 soon, atleast the expansions, then to q2 and expansion, then doom 3 and expansion, then move on to unreal series basically in order. Some of those classics still have great gameplay. A couple months ago i got the urge to upgrade quake 2 graphics and tried online. Couldnt play online unless i use the plain q2 3.20 patch.. :(. Even with the old graphics, the game is still helluva fun.

I am about half way through Quake 2. I been having a blast re-visting the classics

I think out of all the "classics" I've only beat Quake 2...Quake 1 I'm sure I got far in, but at the time when it came out the ADD and flurry of new games got me distracted! :p

Oldest game I've beat recently? Mirrors Edge last night...damn I love that game!

I just remember the main old game im playing now is jedi knight 1.. Wow.. that game is pretty good. Controls is a little wonky, but still good job. Tons of secret areas, and you get more power based on how many secrets you find.. which kinda sucks..

But yeah, Jedi knight series 10x better than the force unleash series. Even with old graphics!

never got around playing the original quake but recently i played the demo of quake II and liked the gameplay A LOT, what do you guys suggest for graphic mods ? I don't want to alter the look of the game, only make it look sharper, so no santa claus skinpacks plz :p

Yeah you should definitely play darkplaces mod. The lighting is nothing short of amazing. when you're in there you're like damn this fucking awesome! Textures are really nice too, not overly done just nice and sharp, and you can get the transparent water file to go with as well as skins. I haven't played it since last summer but I left off with one final portal to jump through. should probably finish that up sometime soon.

Bought thief 2 on a steam sale for super cheap. Definitely a classic worth buying. I think thief 1 is for sale too. Amazing games

Love this game along with Quake 2, too bad today's FPS are so boring, generic and full of bullshit. If a Quake 5 ever does come out I hope its not like today;s half assed FPS games.

I'm using the Darkplaces engine for Quake, and it's been pretty fantastic. That said, I didn't like the changed art direction of some of the new textures in the texture pack, so the only actual features I'm using Darkplaces for is the enhanced resolution, unified lighting and shadowing, and water reflection/refraction. Everything else is vanilla Quake, and I think the assets still look fine if you consider the time and systems they were made for.

If it was specifically Quake 2 you were looking at for an enhanced engine, I've heard good things about KMQuake II, especially since the EGL source port died.

I think I'll probably have to play through Half Life at some point soon too, just because it's on the same engine as Quake and is still an amazing game. I've also still never played the Jedi Knight series, so I may pick some of those up too.

Hmmmm, while Darkplaces is nice. I liked using ProQuake+Vis patches with Quake 1 in software mode. I like the grit.

I just finished playing Quake 1-3 a few months back. Also Beat Quake 1 Expansions 1 and 2.

After I finished my retro win98SE rig that is. Another game I finally beat was Carmageddon Splat pack. Just about finished with Carmageddon 1 now. (rank around 30's).

I have crap tons of backlog :-D

I think Jedi KNight 2 had the best story. Especially the great Cameos... Though lightsaber combat is more "fluid" in 3. Steams Summer sale should be coming soon. hope htey have the Jedi knight series on sale.. seems like i picked it up for 9.99 or 14.99.

JK2 did have a great story. JK3 (outcast) had pretty graphics and better gamwplay.

I would wish for a new entry to that series if I had any confidence they wouldn't fail.

lol, OP, looks like we are on the same wave length. I have gotten the bug recently after someone mentioned Rune being on steam and someone posted a DX10 driver for Unreal and UT. I promptly started some research and have re-installed most of my old games over again. Not sure if I am going to re-install Quake 2 unless I can find my 5th element sound mod for the game.

I went through the process last night of downloading all the QRP textures and added them to Darkplaces. Looks pretty good. I added my arenabots to it and started some old fashion rocketarena with some bots to waste some time.

I am surprised how many people are still playing these old school games online. There is a whole underworld of these games with sites dedicated to them and doing ladder matches all the time.

I can still hear the sound of bouncing pineapples in my sleep, from so much death-match so long ago.
