quake 4 has come down to $20, but is it worth $20?? what do you guys think?

Hmmm...
If you're in need of an FPS to play, yes. It's not as good as Far Cry, HL2, Prey, etc. but it IS much better than Doom 3 and on par with FEAR.

Dude... its quake. =]

if you played q2 single player and liked it, youll like q4. theres a few people out there playing MP, but its no where near the numbers of the previous 3 quakes. far cry is $10, but ive never played it so i cant compare. HL2 > Q4 (single player). Q4 > Prey, but there is some sick sick stuf in prey which makes it worth playing. I have a few hours into FEAR, and im a bit bored at this point... Q4 held my attention all the way through the game. hope fear picks up the pace at some point.

Im just waiting for the new Rocket Arena to come out. Are they working on it at all? I dont keep up ha.

Definitely worth $20. Varied environments, fast carnage, vehicles, lots of enemy types, fun boss battles. It's good times.

Shooter junkie worthy for sure. If you aren't way into them, you may have missed better. Worth twenty beans.

I do have a soft spot for the fast paced shit. Maybe because I'm way better, at say games like UT2004, than BF2. At least relative to the time I put in. If you think BF2 is a bad example of a slower paced shooter, well I don't even touch clancy type stuff.

I would say it's worth $20. It had a great pace, levels never seemed to drag on. Action was fun, environments were well done and the boss encounters were pretty good.

No it´s definiatly not worth it. 9$ maximum.

It´s so stupid you will be pissed off. You are getting a tech demo of the doom 3 engine nothing else.

Dude, dont listen to these cheap skates. Game is only worth 9.00 dude you are a freaking moron and must be a cheap sob. I bought it for 20.00 a month ago its fun to play multiplayer. If you liked Q2/3 worth getting people still play multiplayer around 300 servers mostly DM/CTF. Considering alot of the crap out there you could do way worse then this game for 20.00. Plus the free maps they released end of last year include a couple previous q3 maps. If you have played a quake before buy it if not maybe save your money.

There are a few types of people to consider here. Those that like id games, those who do not, and those that bash them because they think it's the cool thing to do. $9 up there sounds like the last option.

The games are extremely fun, if you like immersive and impressive environments, fast action, low brain power fun. I like RPGs too, but you won't see me bashing an id game because it doesn't have deep character development, or other such features from other types of games. If you expect more out of an id game than a visceral, fast paced, very simple (in a good way,) game with amazing effects, then you're looking in the wrong place.

id games are fun because they have a transparent interface, instant learning curve, amazing graphics and audio, and simple (to the point) gameplay.

People don't seem to understand this. There is definitely a place for this type of gameplay, and if it's not your thing then don't play it. Go play a tactical shooter, or other genre completely.

The latest id games are as good or better than any previous ones, so if you liked the old ones, you'll like these. Just don't expect it to be something it isn't.

Has Q4 mp sped up any.. I tried it when the game first came out, and thought it was sluggish and slow.. Dropped connections regularly as well... Has Q4's netcode/gameplay caught up to Q3's? I don't really feel like re-installing the game to find out

I did not care for q4 sp.. Though truthfully I bought it for mp, and was very dissappointed.. It is prolly woth $20.. But only barely imho...

I paid $50 for my Quake 4 and it was deff worth it. Gameplay, immersiveness, graphics and sound... you can tell proffesionals made it. IMO, it is the ultimate in single player experience... the story line may not be as engrosing as HL2, but it is by far more immersive... there will not be a moment where you'll think... "hmm, theres just a bunch of [incert lame mob] coming up, i'm gonna go grab a sandwitch and come right back"... like there were with HL2 for me... MP wise get yourself Quake 4 Fortress mod and go to town man... I was beta testing it, hope they finaly released it. They did a good job, in that there were more balance issues than bug issues by the time I played enough of the beta..

What is good with Quake 4?

I love some ID games.

Doom and Doom 2 is among the best I have ever played. Quake 2 when I played it was okay. RTCW as well. Doom 3 also okay.

But Quake 4 is like playing Quake 2 with better graphics. It´s old really and it didn´t keep my interest for more then 30 minutes. Doom 3 is a much better game if you must play ID games...

I installed quake 4 again the other day just for nostalgia and couldn't believe how dated it looks already, only a year ago or so I was singing this games praises, thought it was the best thing (graphics wise) since HL2, now it looks unimpressive. Amazing how fast things change.

It's a fun game, and is pretty much a basic FPS. While the MP is a rehash of Quake 3 MP maps, the SP game is a blast. I love it. I played it several times through the first month I got it, and I rarely do that with any game.

it cant be that good

I don't really care for F.E.A.R. all that much. It's repetitious for me. I just turn every corner, go into slo-mo, take my sweet time headshooting the 2-3 guys there, retreat back around the corner. Repeat. If it's a guy in an armored suit...use a grenade, too. The slow-mo feature makes the game too easy...and without it, it's almost like the enemies are suddenly superman and can take 10 headshots instead.
I'd put in on par with Quake 4.

Q4's mp is quite fast and smooth on my systems. (2 P4s with 6600s, an Opteron 165 with a 7600GS, and my main system (Core 2 Duo with X1900XT.)) I regularly host 4-8 player games with no problems. (LAN and Internet) One thing I think everyone should do, is go into the .CFG file, and tweak the mouse tracking settings. You can really smooth it out, so you don't get those multipixel jumps when zoomed in. Really helps with the accuracy. There are two sets of settings for both vertical and horizontal tracking/speed/etc. Can't think of the exact settings as I'm at work, but they definitely make it feel more like Q2 and Q3 as far as aiming goes.

Q4 might run smoothly...but no matter what system you have, it's NEVER fast :) No matter what settings you have, the movement speed in that game is like running in foot-deep molasses.

Whatever. That's only the beginning of the game before you get Stroggified! Then you run around really fast. =)

hehe, dont tell em they get stroggified... thats spoiling and should have a spoiler alert! ... but yes, if you didnt play to the part where you get stroggified, you missed out

well it may or may not be worth $20, but i saw it on sale this week at bestbuy for $15!!! so i had to pick it up. not bad so far but i havent gotten that far.

the movement speed in the sp is a lot slower than the speed in mp. mp action is frantic and intense. SUDDEN DEATH!

i have been playing though Q4 single player again, its fun id say worth the 20 bucks.

I found it incredibly dull. It's simply a by the numbers FPS.

I uninstalled it after playing about 4-5 hours. I found it a chore rather than a pleasure to play.

It is 14$ at the Best Buy close to my house. The game is getting better, but sadly the player base left before it got a chance to get back on its feet.

None the less Quake 3 is still a much better game to play IMO. I don't like SP games so I can't comment on the SP of Quake 4.

You couldn't pay me 20 dollars to play quake 4. Horrible horrible game and dont' deseve the title of quake. Thank you and i'll be here all night. :D

I've played the game and won it and have tinkered with MP a little, too.
The game feels slow to me. The guns are good, but like the other Doom engine games, it plays slow. The game tries to artifically make itself feel faster, but compared to the other 3 Quake games, this one's like playing in slow motion.

i just got the game and it doesnt recognize my audigy se. all it says is "generic hardware". is this because i dont have an open al driver for it? im using the newest driver on the creative site. i tried to find an open al driver for this card but i cant seen to find one that works with my version on the audigy. can anyone help?
