quad sli again

God, can you imagine the heat 4 7800gtxs would put out? The things take up half the friggin motherboard! And watercooling 4 gpus wouldnt be to cheap either. But then again, if you have 4 7800gtx, you're a filthy rich bastard. ;)

It's a very nice development, nontheless.

also i read last week gigabyte out of mainboard business. i got the gt/free evga mainboard. evga should be out of the mainboard business.

The board, currently named "GA-8N-SLI Quad", shows four PCI Express slots that can be occupied by SLI-compatible graphics cards. According to sources, Gigabyte found a way to combine two nForce4 SLI chipsets on one platform. Interestingly, the board integrates two different versions of the chipset - the nForce4 SLI Intel Edition (Crush 19) represents the Northbridge, the version for AMD processors is used as Southbridge.

The board will only be able to carry Pentium processors using the socket 775. Sources told us that Gigabyte is currently testing the 4-GPU board and is likely to enable two configurations. First, the GA-8N-SLI Quad will be able to work with two Gigabyte 3D1 dual-GPU cards and make an additional three PCI Express slots available. The second option is to use single-GPU SLI graphics card in each of the four slots. This translates to a support of either two x16 or four x8 PCI Express slots.

Other features of the GA-8N-SLI Quad include four slots for DDR2 memory for a total of 4 GByte memory, four SATA II ports, ten USB 2.0 and three IEE1394a interfaces.
 
yea i know but somewhow the jetway boards work, and the evga do not. check the thread in motherboards, and check out the evga community. also, chance ecs makes boards for jetway.

If I were gigabyte I would develop a quad pci-e board for crossfire not SLi, considering that crossfire supports (theoretically) four gpu's with the supertiling rendering method. Perhaps gigabyte will release modified drivers that will do sfr by splitting the frame into 4 sections, or maybe a combination of sfr and afr. Still those both seem like clunky solutions to me.

Why do you feel they should just develop for ATI and not nVidia? Why not both? I think it might be a possibility. The only thing that might be holding back development is the lack of Crossfire products availability from ATI.
 
I thought NVIDIA was going to do away with the "SLI Bridge".

If all of the communication and work can be done in software over the PCIe bus, you could then run 4 together :eek:
 
The issue isnt connecting them together, the difficulty is getting the cards working together. As I remember AFR deffinetly cannot be used in more than a 2 card configuration due to latency and synching issues. SFR would be possibile but you can forget about load balancing 4 cards without a significant performance penalty. A tile based system like the Xfire would be much more efficient.
 
For gaming, I can't see how can anyone really make use of 4 x 20 - 30" LCD, not to mention 8.

For 2D or 3D work, it is not necessary for anyone to monitor or really make use of 8 monitors. I mean, there is an upper finite limit of what you really need.

Then there is the issue of heat inside that box and the size of power supply, more like 1000W. I can't imagine the electricity being used daily on a computer like that.

In the end, I believe it is overkill and unnecessary for most people.

What is overkill? When you have more than you need? In that case, a single 7800GTX is overkill, or any 7800 for that matter. I guess technically it is when you have so much more than you need that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. In this case, it's how much electricity, heat, and noise can you provide, dissipate, and deal with or cover up. I, for one, am a firm believer in overkill, and if I had the $$, and this quad SLI thing actually turned out to work, I would invest. To hell with heat and electricity and put some sound deadening foam on that beast - behold the ultimate gaming rig!
 
Hrm... a single 7800 GTX has already made 6800 (any variation) in SLI obsolete. And the latter solution is whole lot more expensive as well. No one in his right mind is going to buy a second 6600 card to run both in SLI when a single 6800 card will give better performance and less hassle. And now they expect people to buy 4 $500 videocards? It's a lot more sensible to wait for the next generation of GPUs while lamenting the inability to run your games at the highest settings possible.

A fool and his money are soon parted ^_-

Yeah, 10 dual core 8800 GT's, with 2 GHZ memory and a 512 bit bus with 128 pipelines and 4 GB of QDR 5 memory, and a 1 GHZ core speed.
 
Nice but where would you put your sound card on that board? I mean if you have 4 7800's you surely aren't going to game with onboard sound are you? I could buy a car for the price of the motherboard and the 7800's.

heh you havent seen some the rich flight sim geeks set ups have you 4 makes a nice cockpit easly 8 would just make it better

Why?

Not only will 4 GTXs cost almost $1500-2000, but this is totally useless. What game cannot run perfectly with ONE GTX at 1600x1200 with full eyecandy?

It looks to me like a lame excuse to buy nVidia.
 
I doubt a single person on these boards will SLi four of them together. Maybe, maybe, some1 will SLi dual core cards just to say they can. But I mean come on. Totally worthless.

I thought that with two sets of SLI videocards you'd only be able to power two seperate monitors, not all 4 running a single monitor. Given the manner in which SLI works, wouldn't they have to recode how the computer handles what part of the screen each card renders? That's why I assume this is only useable if you're running 2 monitors and want SLI powering each one indivudually.
