Quad core vs Dual Core

I am about to build a new system and was considering an intel quad core cpu. I would like to hear some opinions on which type of cpu to get. I am not going to be doing any overclocking. I mainly use my system for gaming, but of course I do some other tasks as well. I have ruled out the Core 2 Extreme because they are way too expensive, but anything below that price point is fair game for me.

If you are mostly into gaming and you don't plan to overclock then I'd go with a dual core.

Q6600

E6850

For an extra $20 bucks at Newegg, or less at other retailers, you can go 25% faster from 2400 MHz with a Quad to 3000 MHz with a Dual. Over 99% of games presently available aren't multi-threaded or coded to take advantage of a dual core let alone a quad core processor. I know in the future they will be but they were saying the same thing last year when the Dual cores first came out and there still aren't many multi-threaded games available. Games are typically more GPU limited than CPU limited anyhow.

I know many users disagree but Instead of flaming me, why not post a list of games and links to benchmarks to prove how much better games run on a Quad.

Even in a multi-threaded game like Supreme Commander, the E6850 and Q6600 are basically equal while in single threaded games like Prey and Serious Sam 2, the E6850 is well ahead.

The dual core also creates less heat and needs less cooling which might equal a quieter computer if you can adjust the cpu fan speed and case fans lower.
 
I just upgraded from an overclocked dual core to a stock quad core (Q6600) at the moment...Vista never ran better. I actually picked up additional Frames when gaming! I was concerned that it may not be much of a difference but for the money it's worth it. I would say if you are using Vista then yeah the Quad is the only choice IMO. XP...then I would go for the better deal price wise unless you plan on upgrading soon.
 
i think this speaks alot to the potential of quad core, where 4 cores are truly utilized.

I have been mulling over this decision myself. I will have the opprotunity to buy a q6600 for relatively cheap this fall (~150ish).
I will be OC'ing, albeit minor. Right now I have my E6300 up to ~2.5GHz, and am pretty happy, though at stock speeds the Q6600 is just as fast as that.
I have an Antec 900 and a Zalman 9700 cooler, so I assume my temp should not be a problem...

Worth it?
 
Honestly, the Q6600 is so damn cheap why not get it versus a dual core?

Besides, we will begin seeing more and more multiprocessor aware games and game engines very soon now.

I say get the quad.
 
Multithreading is becoming more and more mainstream, might as well get the Q6600 to take advantage of any instance of it. Besides, Fold on the idle cores in the meantime :D.
 
ONLY reason to get a core duo instead of the quad is if you cant afford the quad $270ish or you are on a tight buget.. no good reason to get a 6750 or 6850 at all. they are too close money wise to a quad.

Love my Q6600 over my e6400. The e6400 could overclock a lot higher, but I get better scores with my Q6600. Plus it just seems faster....
 
Thanx for the posts everyone. You have convinced me. I will go with the quad. Hopefully I will be able to pair it with 4 gigs of ram and an geforce 8800 ultra.

If you use VISTA 32 you might as well just get 3 gigs, it can't use 4 anyway.
 
on my vista it shows 3581mb of ram. so i can use 3.5.. not bad at all...ram are so cheap... so what if i cant use that 512meg of ram
