I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the $99 AMDx4 630 w/free motherboard deal at Microcenter and selling the E5200 and Gigabyte board in my main rig.

Would it make more sense to get a cheap Intel C2Q (Q8200) and sell the E5200 instead?

The system is in a Antec SLK1650 case with a Smartpower 350w PSU. I've been told a few times the Smartpower PSUs are not reliable. I've had no problems with it and would like to reuse it if possible. However, I'm not sure it would be able to handle either upgrade options.

I'm looking for ways to cut down on the number of systems and reduce electricity usage. The two single core systems will probably be retired this summer.

I just got a insert in my electric bill (PECO) regarding their 10% rate increase :(
 
Id just stick with the intel since you are already set up for it, the quad will more than make up for shutting down the 2 single core rigs, and you may be able to sell those and get a few bucks even

Make sure your board can run that tho, if not, the Q66 works on damn near everything

I flashed the BIOS to the latest version after I installed it last year. It will accept up to the Q9650 at this point.
 
I also say to pick up a used quad in the FS section. People are ditching their quads and picking up i7s and the like.
Deals can be had.

Then unless they have other duties, you can shut the other rigs down, sell them and be 1/2 way to another quad rig, or an updated GPU.
 
+1 for used Q6600 option. Pick up a g0 if possible. They should go between 100 and 125
 
do you have a GPU in there? If so, you might be pushing it.

If not, you're probably ok
 
I'm using the integrated video, 1 hard drive and 2 optical drives. I could remove one optical if needed.
 
Your more than fine on the PSU as long as it isn't some craptastic unit that came with a case or something.

Not oc-ing a q6600 even just a bit is some sort of crime.

The power supply came with the case. The case is a Antec SLK-1650B. The power supply is a Antec SP-350. Looks like reusing the power supply is not advisable. If I have to upgrade more stuff, I might as well do a full build.

No, Antec cases/PSU combos are fine. Kendrak is referring to the no-name "craptastic" brands out there.

I've used at least three Antec/case combos in my past, and every one of them has given me no issue.
 
It should be fine, but I strongly recommend your next purchase be a new PSU, once you get the quad you could probly make enough from selling the two single core rigs to get a decent 550-600w unit
