Q9450 CPU reporting wrong frequency

I am not entirely sure but it sounds like you may have speedstep enabled on your mobo. If you don't want it to ramp your processor speed as you need it then you can shut it off in the bios of your mobo. But I could be wrong ;)
 
Proteos is right, SpeedStep is enabled. Don't worry about it. Do something CPU intensive and the CPU will clock itself back up. But if you're not doing something CPU intensive, the CPU downclocks itself to conserve energy and power.

No need to disable it.
 
I disabled it in bios and you were right, it is now reading right. Does speed step have a real benefits or can i leave it off.

The benefits are to lower power usage while the extra power is not needed.

and for those who dont care about power usage, lower idle temps y0!

every time i see one of these threads everyone says leave it on and the user ends up disabling it anyway
