Q9300 vs Q9550

Hey

I own a Intel Q9300 which I have OCed to 3.45Ghz but I was wondering if its worth it to upgrade to the Q9550? Yes I know I would maybe earn a bit more on the OC since the Q9550 would let itself OC higher but my main interest for upgrading is the fact that the Q9550 has 12mb cache while the Q9300 only has 6mb.

Im mostly a gamer so thats my main area of focus when it comes to upgrades, I already have a pritty maxed out system spec its just the CPU now that im thinking about if I should upgrade or not. What do you guys think? Will the extra cache and few more MHZ on the OC help a lot?

Not enough of a performance increase to justify the costs.
 
Nope. You would benefit far more from a graphic card upgrade, not the CPU.

Tell us what you are running in the rest of your system.

Going to a Q9550 will give you more cache but the main reason would be the better multiplier. You have an 8x multiplier on the Q9400 compared to 8.5 on the Q9550. If it's your motherboard's FSB that is limiting your overclock that will help a bit.

possibly correct but I wouldn't claim "far more" without even knowing what videocard he is using.


as to whether the upgrade is worth it,

Depends. If he lives near a MC ($170 Q9550) and will sell his old cpu, maybe...

Really depends on how much he enjoys messing with his computer. As most here already know, there are lots of times when people upgrade something that don't seem justified on a price to performance analysis. This is a hobby to some people...

I was thinking about that in my deleted post above but retracted my comment because the OP already has the current core2 quad at 3.45 GHz. Even though this upgrade may cost only $50US total (after selling the current chip) I am not sure how much benefit he is going to get.
