q6700 OC help

Im trying to OC my q6700 G0 but so far i only managed to reach 3.5Ghz stable @ 1.48v, while rams its at 860Mzh. temps are 50:idle 70:load. anything above that will result in my PC shutting down at random times. So far i only know to only raise the FSB, and Voltage, but i heard about that also raising the north bridge voltage and tweaking many other things will give a better OC.

-any suggestions?

ram: 8gb transcent pc6400
m/b: Abit quad gt ix 38
psu: Hec zephyr 750wtt
 
Your numbers indicate you are running a CPU multiplier of 8 x 433 FSB resulting in 3.5GHz CPU speed and with a memory multiplier of 2 (1:1 ratio) your memory is at 860 MHz as you indicated.

Increase the CPU multiplier to 9 and reduce the FSB to 390MHz. That will result in the same CPU speed but underclock the memory slightly taking the memory out of the picture as it might be what is holding you back as your current settings are at about where most pc6400 800MHz ram starts to need the timings loosened or just craps out entirely. Testing with memtest86+ would confirm that issue. You provide no background on what you have done/tested so it is difficult to provide additional instructions and I an not inclined to write an article on the art of OCing. Your current OC is very decent, voltage a tad high but not unexpected. If temps are OK you should consider being happy. To proceed much further requires a lot of homework on your part and to ensure long board life and reliability you should be looking at modding the heat pipe and adding MCH cooling. You have some very good results for "out of the box".

Yes raise the MCH an additional .1 volt and see what happens but you are about at the limit of safe CPU voltage in my opinion. Raising the MCH and lowering the CPU voltage, if stable, would be ideal. People run higher, Intel absolute max is 1.55 volts but since the CPU voltage regulator can have spikes up to 50mV (.050 volts) anything close to 1.50 volts is pushing it. But its your stuff and do what you want.

Look for an Abit OCing guide for your board.
 
In addition to Bill's suggestions, I'd also suggest you have a good CPU cooler if you're going to OC. 50C idle is a bit high....so something like a Thermalright Ultra 120 or Tuniq Tower would knock temps down 10-15C at least. These quads ramp up in temp under load so it's something to keep in mind.

Raising the NB voltage would probably help a lot if you're using something like a 433 fsb...maybe 1.5 - 1.6. I followed an anandtech review of my board (ip35 pro) and to reach 8 x 450 they had the NB voltage up to 1.72 (which is a little high, but replaced the thermalpaste, added a fan to the nb cooling). You may not need to set it that high though. Also, with quad cores you may have to mess w/ the GTL ref voltage (has to do w/ Vtt setting). That's a bit tricky, but if you follow the OC guide on the Intel Processor forum here on [H], there are some links explaining GTL and some tables to follow.

All that being said, I'm still trying to get to 3.6 successfully myself. My core 3 errors out in prime95 so I'm still fiddling w/ GTL and vcore.
