in a nutshell

q6600: more "futureproof", better for rendering/animating, that kind of stuff. games will probably be optimized for multi-cores in the future, but no positive word yet (other than supreme commander)

e6850: best for today's games, as most are optimized for dual cores...high overclocking potential as well

it depends on what you want and when you will update again

Help me decide...I really don't want to mess around with OC'ing...so which one would be better?
 
It is for games. I don't do anything else on my home PC.

If i decide to upgrade now i will get the Q6600. If not then i will wait until the end of the year or early next year and upgrade then.

Oc'ing just isn't some people's cup of tea. But it makes you wonder why they're lurking around these forums. Maybe they just checkout lots of pc websites.

oc'ing is fairly easy if you read guides and down turn up from 2.4ghz to 3.5ghz right away.

I have a goal for my Q6600, and that is 3.6ghz @ 1.45v. That is what I am going to do as soon as it is in my board. I already know what my other components in my system are capable of, so why waste time taking small steps?

Go for it, dude. That way when you fry your stuff the rest of us will know not to do that. Somebody has to be the guinea pig.

Guys, after getting the Q6600 I would not even hesitate to offer it over the dual core variants. The Q6600 is just extraordinarily fast and smooth. I felt a bigger difference going to dual to quad than I did going from single to dual.

If your PSU can handle it, it is so much nicer.

If it's such an "unnoteworthy" thing to do then why did you find it necessary to note it? I imagine that the vast majority of the people who use these forums o/c their machines. Knock yourself out.

some of us like the hardware reviews even if oc'ing makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever. Honestly, I think too many people here are oc-a-philes, but that's my opinion...that being said, i'm extremely grateful for all the feedback on components, it's helping me a lot on deciding what kind of stuff to get whenever i finally get home and get a new computer.

that being said...anyone know anything of the q6700's? or any real replies to the original post?

IMO, with no OC in the equation, E6850 is best for the next year with current and near future game stock, Q6600 2+ years. In between, roll the dice man!

Of course you have to be careful and you have to know what to do. Too much voltage with a not so capable HSF and you can say bye-bye to your components. What I am saying is if I already know what my other components are capable of, why bother with baby steps. Just crank that baby up to 3.6ghz, which is my goal.

btw...just installed my Q6600 but this eVGA NF68-AR board is not giving me love. Anything fsb from 1300 to 1800 will BSOD as soon as it trys to load Vista. It doesn't matter what vCore I threw at it. Beyond 1800fsb, it won't post at all. I have an A1 being cross shipped from eVGA so hopefully I get to play with it soon.
 

Umm... doesn't that SUPPORT multicore CPU's for games like Crysis, Bioshock, MMO's, etc.? It says things like "You will see a large performance increase on multi-core processors" and "The most significant enhancement is the increased frame rate but it doesn’t stop there. Multi-core systems benefit from being able to generate much more complex visual particle effects using the additional cores." :)

are you ocing on air or water?
