Was just curious on everyones opinon. I'm looking to upgrade from the Q6600, but I do not want to spend the money on the i7 as I just bought myself a new laptop. But my basic question is, is it worth it to move up to the Q9650 or just wait it out till the next round of processers?

Thanks!

I thought people upgraded to the q6600 because a quad would last you way longer than a dual core.

Your CPU is still plenty fast. No need to upgrade unless you really need the speed, and in that case it would be better to go straight to an i7 setup.

why upgrade? Just OC the crap out of it!

I'm running at 3.2 GHz and idle temps are 21-23C (on air) , game-stress in the mid to high 40's, orthos/prime stressing around 52C, plenty of headroom on these bad boys.

THIS

And even 3.2Ghz is not overclocking the crap out of it - see sig

Yeah, I actually undervolted my 3.0ghz Q6600 from its 1.2875V stock to 1.215V (vdroops down to 1.1675 when using IBT) and it runs with no problems.

Wait, this is not a worthwhile upgrade. i7 if you have to upgrade.

The only worthwhile upgrade for a Q6600 is the i7 platform for the vast majority of people. Sure, I would probably see a difference going from my Q6600s to Q9650s if I was able to overclock them to at least the same speeds I have my Q6600s at. However, unless the software I was using utilized SSE4 (which I don't think any of it does currently) I wouldn't get a large boost from it unless I was able to hit the 4Ghz mark with them.

As a power user, I would get a large performance boost from the i7 platform but can't afford an upgrade at this time.

Since you're not going to go the i7 route, I doubt it would be worth the time or money to move to a different socket 775 quad core.

I love my q6600, I will probably jump to a i7 when the new 35nm ones come out. I do a lot of photoshop and 1080p video editing, so I "need/want" a i7 :)

Out of curiosity, would there be any difference from Q6600 @ 3Ghz Vs. stock Q9650 in real world use?

The Q9650 is faster clock for clock, but I doubt you'd notice anything outside of benchmarks. The Q9650 is a much better overclocker though, and you'd be just about guaranteed a 4GHz overclock with a decent motherboard and CPU cooler.

I would just wait for i7. q6600 is still a pretty beefy cpu and a q9650 is faster but I doubt you will notice it that much.

That's what I figured. Guess no upgrades for my rig until another year or two unless those GTX 300 series kick major ass. :c)

Thanks!

haha I am running exact same voltage too @ 3Ghz also. 1.215 was lowest I could go to be IBT stable.

What temps are you at? I normally idle at 34C.... however due it being 90F outside I am now getting 40C idle. Haven't seen it go over 48C load though.

I think the general consensus is it is not worth the upgrade just yet. The Q6600 still has plenty of beef, and even the newest video cards are still the bottleneck. I generally wait until a good cpu upgrade is less than $100. If you really feel like spending money, then you should consider another video card if you are into gaming or consider a SSD drive. I feel the upgrade itch too, but when I stepped back and thought about it there really isn't anything out there it can't handle.
