Q6600 or Q8300: thoughts?

I've got a q6600 and am happy with it. So much so, that on another computer (PIII 500!!!) I'm going to upgrade, I'm thinking of sticking with a q6600 instead of going to an i7.

I noticed the Q8300 clocks and OC's at nearly the same level as the q6600. It has less cache, but a smaller die process (cooler). Price is nearly identical.

Any pro's or con's?

It has more fsb (1333) and a slightlu higher clock per core (2.5) so youd get slight performance increase from that but it had half the cache which will hurt you more.

The Q6600 is much better for ocing lower fsb and higher mulitpler 7.5 for the 8300 vs 9 for the 6600.

it does have a smaller fab process but comes with a smaller cooler too same as the dual cores so i dont think it will run cooler unless u get a aftermarket cooler.

id stick with the q6600
 
The multi is a BIG difference. I didn't know the 8300 was limited to 7.5. Thanks!
 
The Q8xxx series are a joke. Either go up to the Q9450/9550 or stay with ye olde Q6600 if you aren't building i7.
 
It really depends on the price. The Q6600's are going up in price and the Q8XXX's are pretty cheap. The multiplier doesn't matter as much as long as you have a good board and memory that can do high FSB's. Same with the Q9300/Q9400's. I got my Q9300 for $150 off of the forum.

SSE4 also in the 45nm parts if you have apps that use it.

One of the folders is sellign 5 or 6 Q6600s for $150 each, pre-lapped, and they all did 3.2Ghz on air. It's not hard to find them for reasonable prices still.

I agree. The biggest advantage of the Q6600 is the multi. I'd probably put it like this.

Q8XXX < Q6600 < Q9400 < Q9550

But the Q9300/Q9400 is really only good if you have the right parts to OC it as it starts with a much lower multiplier.
