I have $200 so I'm wondering should I upgrade my e2180 to a Q6600 or should i buy the 22" inch lcd and dual screen my 17" & 22". Im feeling more of the cpu but I'm not sure?

Id take the Acer. I think you will get more enjoyment out of it than a new processor.

go with processor, then upgrade to 24 inch monitor it'll keep dropping in price. Monitors IMO is a longer term item so I would hold out for a bit bigger monitor.

Ya thats what I was thinking whats the point in getting a monitor and then i cant run microsoft office for 2 hrs?

As much as I love my quads, I think I'd go for a larger monitor first. There's no way in hell I could stand to use a 17" display as my primary. Sure, I have three 17" CRTs around me at the moment but they are only hooked up to secondary computers. My main system has a 24" LCD and 19" CRT.

Truthfully, I would suggest you save up a bit more money and start looking at 24" LCDs. My previous monitor was the aforementioned 19" CRT which I always run 1600x1200. There was no way I was going to go with an LCD with a lower resolution. I picked up my 24" Acer LCD earlier this year on sale and it runs a resolution of 1920x1200. That was the absolute minimum I was going to go.

Just remember, the monitor is the thing you stare at all the time. Just like the keyboard and mouse, the monitor should be something you don't go cheap on.

Besides, unless you have a crappy motherboard, you should be able to overclock that 2180 and get some decent speed out of it.

22" monitor hands down = the e2180 can be o/ced, and it's not like it won't run your ms office or any games for that matter on stock even on stock. I wouldn't call it slow as hell, that's left for people still run single cores. As for 24".. *shrugs* I can't stand them physically - after 10-15 minutes on one I get nauseous as hell, happens with all 24"s. Hey, could be a chance you're like me :D Besides, I don't need to squint anymore than I need to.

What do you mean by this? I just came off a 2.0GHz Skt 939 Dual Core and it wasn't bad at all in Windows. I would think a e2180 would be plenty fast for MS Office.

that e2180 will run 3ghz easily. probly on stock voltage! Bump the fsb to 333mhz. I ran mine @ 3.2ghz. I am happy with my upgrade to a Q6600 which I also overclocked to 3.2ghz. There is a big difference between the two even at the same clock speeds

Yes but I dont really overclock due to some major problems I get out of it so I just want a fast stock speed cpu. Is there a better alternative to a quad core like a very good dualcore? If there is I'm wondering if it costs below the quad core maybe in the $100-140 range?

the e2180 is a speedy son of a gun hell of a processor. the monitor is your best choice, or one of the new hd4850's. If your into gaming a new monitor or new vid card are better options.

well, how does the rest of your pc look like? i mean spec wise. what mobo, how much ram, what vid card?

i just purchased a Samsung 2032BW+ two days ago and i have not been able to stop smiling. it almost brought a tear to my eye when i first plugged it in. i had a 19inch 20ms acer widescreen.

CPU: E2180
Motherboard: EVGA 650i Ultra T1
Ram: OCZ PC2-6400 SLI Edition 2 GIGS
Vid Card: XFX 8600 GTS 512mb ddr3

Also is it regular for cpu fan to run 100% after any modification in the bios? I changed cpu fsb and it kept going 100% it also does same if I only change ram volt?

Ya thats what I was thinking also my birthday is on Nov 25 so I might as well buy a a monitor for my 15th birthday since im spending my own money buying the cpu. After that its Christmas :) I love my bday

22in over 24in, over 16x12 res, GPU memory hog then you'll need like, 1gb vid mem.

monitor. better computer experience then a newer processor.

Um... what are you talking about? I have a 24" 1920x1200 monitor running just fine with an 8800GT 512 meg of RAM video card. That includes running games at 1920x1200. Before that I was running a 7600GT with 256 meg of RAM video card with a 19" CRT at 1600x1200 including games at the resolution and I was just fine. I don't think you really know what the video RAM is actually used for. There aren't many stresses on video RAM until you start to crank up either AA or AF.

Wait if I get a new monitor then Imma have running games at the monitors resolution and I believe my 8600 gts might not be able to handle it ?

an 8600GTS would not like a 24 but I don't know how much better a 22 would be. if you don't mind turning down the eye candy then it would get you buy.

That deal's been dead for a while. Prices like that don't last and it was posted at around 11pm on slickdeals.

Currently im falling more for the cpu since i dont want to buy a good monitor + buy a good video card to run it atm. Maybe when good video cards fall little more in price I will. So most likely im going to get a cpu, right now im trying to figure which to get a quad core or dual core.

what games do you play or plan to play?

Get the monitor. I don't know how anyone can suggest the Q6600. It's either upgrade from a 17'' to a 22'' which a HUGE difference, or a E2180 to a Q6600, which really will not feel like very much.

Well monitors don't really depreciate or change that much, so while you may upgrade or change computers often the monitor usually doesn't change. Long term investment vs. short term? I don't see any new monitor tech coming out, and OLED is still a while away (and they have to fix the much overestimated running life). You can always tone down your settings and resolution in your games while you gather pennies for a new card, and the card won't have trouble playing hi-def videos or running on desktop full resolution.

economics.. marginal cost and benefits :D

OC your processor, buy a 8800GT via eBay with Live Cashback for $70 (AR), and get a monitor. I prefer to buy monitors locally or at a store with a nice return policy, so if I get dead pixels I can take it back. Your processor @ 3.0 GHz will tie or outperform a stock Q6600 in many games, and, generally, CPU dependency decreases as resolution increases.

Go for the quad. I love mine, and I had an E2160 before it. I have a 22", and I wish I had just paid the extra for a 24" :(

^ problem is you have the monitor; OP doesn't, he's using a 17er

You guys are forgetting that.. spending money on the quad means money taken away from the monitor, kinda ironic to tell him to save for a monitor, but go buy a quad anyways :confused: *shrugs* it looks a "one or the other" situation, but some of you guys are recommending both.

I'll put it simply. I have 3 Q6600s running 3.4, 3.6 and 3.6. I love my quads and won't go with anything less than 4 cores for the foreseeable future. However, there is no fucking way in hell I would live with a 17" monitor on my primary system. Sure, I have 3 17" monitors around me but they are on secondary systems so it doesn't bother me much.

In 2001 I bought a 19" monitor and just this year I bought a 24" LCD. There is no way in hell I would go with a monitor smaller than 19". I got stuck with 17" CRT and later a shitty 17" LCD at my previous job. I hated using both of them although the CRT was a hell of a lot better. A jump from a 17" monitor to a 22"+ monitor would be a bigger difference than going from a dual core to a quad core processor.

As I said, you stare at the monitor the whole damn time you are using the computer. It's more important to have a good display than a faster processor.

Get the 22" your current GPU will run it fine on pretty decent settings, probably not much AA though. Depends on what games your playing though.

Well, i upgraded my C2D E4400(stock clocks)2.0Ghz to a Core 2 Extreme QX6700(quad core!!)2.66Ghz

and its pretty awesome, but i wont see a big difference until i upgrade from my 8600 GTS 256MB. I do have a 19'' Widescreen LCD monitor and its awesome and cheap(1440x900 res).

In the long run the Quad will be better, definitely if you game alot and do encoding and what not, you can always the the Q6600 and then get a cheap monitor thats over 17''.

Hhaha this is starting to get very hard of a decision due to all of your opinions! I wanted to just say I do a lot more multitasking on my computer then gaming. The gaming is just a here and there sort of thing, just testing games. Also for the monitor it is certainly pulling me since some of you guys are saying its a unbelievable upgrade. In total all I have is $200 to spend on whatever I want and so I don't know for a "good" size monitor if I have enough money(14 years old). Im rather planning on getting a monitor for my birthday which is coming Nov 25. and then I really don't have a budget since my parents will let me buy anything.

I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR GUYS OPINIONS!
